But as a young person who enjoys bands all the way from the 80s to now, Sleeptoken IS going to be one of those legacy bands for the current generation. Bring me the Horizon has proved they can reach the very top, and so will Sleeptoken.
Saw sleeptoken in Frankfurt last Sunday, I can ask another question.....why doesn't this band get any airtime on the radio? This band is such a perfect mix for a huge audience from all musical backgrounds that I really don't understand it. They are a perfect headliner and glad that they also headline Rock am Ring. Also glad that they get the time to play when it gets dark, because sleeptoken deserves the lightshow which comes with the music.....in Frankfurt....damn what an awesome show.
I saw Sleep Token last year at a sold out 2,500 capacity venue. I left the show thinking "Those guys are on the cusp. They are gonna blow up and be doing huge venues and potentially headlining festivals." A year later they are playing a 13,000 capacity venue with low tickets remaining and now have a headline spot at Download for next year. I'm not even that big a fan of them btw, I heard a few tracks a couple days before I seen them an decided to try and grab a ticket. I actually preferred Northlane that night, but seeing the crowd reaction to ST, I knew.
Similar experience. Saw them last year at an even smaller venue than that packed to the brim. Enjoyed the show but left thinking "they needed a bigger stage". Fast forward a year at Radio City Music Hall and it's like, yea, this is what it should have been. This feels right.
@agzofficial8594 I listened to that trash on your channel and want my view count back. You couldn't tell a good bad if it hit you in the face. Watch these "bad" bands continue to thrive.
Promoters are not stupid. They crunch the numbers and have their scouts. They know what they are doing. One thing about rock fans is their loyalty to a specific subgenre. It can be a blessing or a hindrance. I'm old but open-minded and been to several huge rock festivals that introduced me to bands that were much better than these frequent headliners. There seems to be another shift in rock music again and its refreshing to see bands like Sleep Token given this opportunity to showcase it.
Yep, there's always one slightly controversial band somewhere, that's how we progress. It started when we classified music that we could rebel on the rules of it, and ever since we've only been innovating on what the sound of genres are. Rock's innovation period started with bands like King Crimson and even Ozzy Osbourne creating a new genre. So Sleep Token isn't new, as The Mars Volta were just before these guys and helped innovate on the sound of rock a lot.
I am 37 and I grew up on a lot of the music mentioned. I was just turned on to Sleep Token a few months ago and I was blown away! Sleep Token is an unbelievably incredible band. Even the Beatles have songs I don't like... but so far, with Sleep Token, I can't think of a song of theirs I dislike. Even Corey Taylor loves them. The band as a whole is very talented but Vessel can sit on a stage by himself with a piano and be so damn good, it's captivating. Anyone complaining on the basis that they don't know the band...get to know them? You can find all of their music on here. Listen to it before complaining. Just because a band is newer, that doesn't mean they aren't as talented, or even more talented, than bands from twenty years ago.
@ninanightnurse I was actually watching a hilarious RUclips channel that talks about awful movies from Tubi and things like that and the girl started one video talking about Sleep Token, playing a tiny snippet of Chokehold and Take me back to Eden and it sounded so great, I tracked the band down and listened to the full album immediately. Lmao I owe Kennie big time for that considering she normally never mentions music.
And what’s worse bet a lot of the ‘gatekeepers’ don’t even attend the festival. How many on social media have said “I’m not going” So, don’t go. Give your ticket to someone who wants to be there
@@ernestorodriguez817100% I find it funny that “rock” radio stations act like Metallica, Redhot chilli peppers, green day and nickleback are the best bands ever but they still only play the same 3 songs from them and they are always 15+ years old if they are such great bands play some new songs from them… but at the same time don’t cause those bands all suck
I agree as someone from the UK, we definitely need some more younger bands headlining at least one day of a major festival. I remember people reacting that same way with Bring Me The Horizon last year so it's no surprise about the controvesory. I did not expect them to headline Download and now they are , it changes the game for future headliners and maybe more UK festivals. They definitely deserve it
I agree with you. Also i think Svalbard and Employed To Serve deserve to be headliners as well and I am not from the UK, but I love those two bands anyways!! I am from Across the pond BTW.
just saw them in germany, frankfurt past weekend. They were so incredible. Next year the are also Headliner on Sunday at Rock am Ring, can't wait to see them again! WORSHIP
As a Metalhead since 1983 I luv this lineup. With ST headlining Download Festival is a decision I support 💯%. I would say with the trajectory of ST is something I’ve not seen in a band since Nirvana. People need to look at the positive aspects of our music genre and take it as a win for heavy and alternative music. Sometimes people just want to complain to complain. If you don’t like the bands don’t go. There are way more people who will!
You've been in the scene for some time, would you compare ST success and upward trajectory to someone as big as say Metallica, who also relatively went in a fast upward trajectory early in their career?
I suspect the people asking "Who is Sleep Token?! Why are they headlining?!" know exactly who Sleep Token are, but they don't like them for whatever reason so they're acting like their headliner spot isn't deserved and they don't have a huge fanbase.
The only reason someone wouldn't know who ST is, is if they literally only listen to FM radio. Even people I know who only listen to country or rap know who they are.
Metalheads will always find something to complain about - they complain at the lack of new headliners yet also complain when new ones are announced. Sleep Token absolutely deserve the headline slot and I'm pleased that they got it!
since the late 90s every album that Iron Maiden has done all sounds the same!! I blame the fans for not keeping the bar standard high. Iron Maiden don't deserve to be a headliner. Judas Priest, yes...their last album was straight up fire and they are older than Maiden. Yes, I believe that Sleep Token should be a headliner. Vessel and II have definitely changed metal and almost every other genre out there. They blew up so fast because of their diverse genre blending songs and the lyrics are damn good. Their fame is earned!!
They're actually phenomenal. I wasn't a fan at first, but they grew on me quick. They just aren't "heavy" all the time, so people whine. People would change their minds if they'd actually go see these dudes live. They are a totally new take on music imo
What? Green Day almost never does festivals, it's cool to see them in that setting. Wtf is wrong with you people, do you just WANT to be mad about stuff?
@@Gregbaltzer That's ok. Everyone likes different stuff. But to argue they're not a headliner caliber or a rock band is just pure ignorance. They typically sell out stadiums, it's cool to see them in a festival setting they almost never do festivals (because they don't need to)
Corey Taylor is dead to me forever since he publicly blamed a selfish fan for getting him sick with COVID when he himself was vaxxed. But vaxxed people are protected right? 🤪🤪🤪
Sleep Token are going to be old-school enormous. I mean, absolutely gigantic. They are totally unique, and, most importantly, they have the songs. The only other band even vaguely close is Slaughter To Prevail, but the difference is, their next album not only has to be an absolute banger, they've got to have songs good enough to cross over. If they don't, they may miss their chance.
I'm so proud of Sleep Token and happy for them to be able to headline such a big festival! They're seriously AMAZING live too! Just saw them on Wednesday in Budapest for the first time and was blown away not just from how fantastic Vessel sounds live (I'm picky about that and he's like near studio quality), but also the production quality (rest of the band, female vocalists, lighting, setlist etc...). No one who loves them or are open to music will regret going to one of their shows. And I can't wait to see at least online how they'll surely conquer Download! The gatekeepers and naysayers should stay silent, and as it was said here, give room and a chance for new music and wonderful talent. And Sleep Token is a one of a kind gem that deserves all the recognition! Much love and hugs from Hungary! 🇭🇺❤️😎🤘
I think it's about damn time they get some mainstream attention & applaud the festival for standing up for them.(I commented before you said exactly what I said but I'm leaving it cause damnit they deserve all the love)
i honestly love sleep token. I love metal as well, and i know they arent really 100% metal but i get why they have the metal community divided. I too live in the US and always had a little bit of envy seeing download fest lineups. Dates back over a decade ive been wanting to go
Being in metal like for 30 plus years now (i am 49), in a band myself......the older you get the more you realise how redicilous it is to go through the scene with these blinders on and having "rules" about music....absolutly BS, Metal wouldn't have excisted when people went along following the "rules". I adore sleep token, they are genius.
I went to download this year for the first time at 32. I've wanted to go since i was 15, but it wasnt to be until now! It was cold, wet, muddy and TOTALLY EPIC! I bought tickets as soon as they came on sale, and i was SO happy yo see that Sleep Token would be headlining 😍😍 they have a song for every mood, and to have every song a banger? So rare!
I think Sleep Token deserves the chance to be a headliner. I mean I love a lot of legacy bands and it is very rare when I listen to bands that are younger than a decade (or more like a few decades), but when I 1st checked out Sleep Token they caught me by surprise. Vessel has an amazing vocal range and technique and they have a solid musical background. Let the kids shine.
I'll never understand why people react like this. I don't listen to Sleep Token, but I'm happy for them, man! Their meteoric rise is well deserved even if I don't personally enjoy the music. People need to get over themselves.
Thanks for providing optimism and your positive attitude toward Sleep Token. I hear and read so much negativity about rock music, in general, and this video was really a good start to my day. Hope you make the festival!
I AM TIRED OF PEOPLE HATING ON "NEWER" AND "UPCOMING BANDS" AND IN THIS CASE SLEEP TOKEN...YOU DON'T LIKE EM' DON'T LISTEN, THAT'S WHAT I DO IF I DON'T ENJOY LISTENING TO A BAND. I AM GLAD HE MENTIONED ALL THE PREVIOUS BANDS IN HIS RESPONSE. I REMEMBER WHEN I FIRST BEGAN LISTENING TO KORN N SLIPKNOT AS A LIL' KID AND PEOPLE HATING ON THEM. ALSO, BRING ME THE HORIZON, AND WATCHING PEOPLE BOOING THEM OFF STAGE IN THEIR EARLIER YEARS AND NOW LOOK AT THEM ALL! ♥️
Sleep Token completely deserve this, incredible band with a one style👌🏻 I don’t do festivals anymore, I think the last fest I did was Download and I only went to see Refused and a few others including Sound garden with Chris singing🙌🏻 I left after Sound Garden, don’t remember who was headlining but I’d probably seen them a million times before🤷🏼♂️
I am 52 and I can say that I have seen many great bands at their right time. I dont care to see those anymore though. I want to see new music and I absolute love the heaps of new bands next year at Download. To wait another 10 years until they ‘deserve’ that spot is nonsense! They surely ‘deserve’ it now and that field will be jammed packed when they play.
I'm 52 as well and I like to think my musical tastes evolve with the times, I'm starting to enjoy Sleep Token, Falling in Reverse, Lorna Shore, etc, but I still love the bands I grew up with. I don't see an issue with them headlining a Festival, like one poster said, its' in the UK, and they are a UK band.
Sleeptoken deserves every right to be headliners their stage show is amazing and so does falling in reverse, bad omens, and other bands thats up and coming.sleeptoken is one of the fastest rising bands since their eps, sundowning, this place will become your tomb and take me back to eden.all albums were phenomenal.
People gotta touch grass. Sleep Token’s momentum isn’t slowing down anytime soon and people gotta accept that. If you don’t like it, don’t listen. As a diehard fan of the band, this is fantastic to see. They absolutely deserve this. Worship
Start with some of the singles on the last album, then listen to the EPs, singles and albums in chronological order. There are a lot of references to older stuff.
Sleep Token has earned my respect. It is a different type of metal. Adding funk and RnB rhythms with soulful lyrics. They really have a sound of their own.
Who the F is criticising a festival for headlining up & coming bands??! Talk about entitlement... if you don't like the bands then guess what, you don't have to go! The whole point of a _festival_ is that you get to pick & choose who you want to see, and if you're truly a music fan (not just going for "selfies at the clout-fest") you have the awesome experience of discovering new music & artists through their live performance... how do these people think Green Day, Korn & every other big rock/metal/alternative band got their start? 🤦♀️
Really looking forward to the festival next year. Headliners next year look great, been getting into Sleep Token recently, loving their music, can't wait for next year!
I’m sick of these people being whiny about everything. All these ‘rules’ you whine about are man made, but unfortunately for you, even man made things evolve. In reality there are no rules, or rights or wrongs in art. If it sounds good, like Sleep Token do, then just enjoy it. All the “never heard of them” insults (when you clearly have) are so stupid. Ignorance, especially wilful ignorance, doesn’t make you look cool like you seem to think it does. If you won’t give something a chance and just listen without imposing all these preconceived notions based on rules and definitions people put in place 2948482 years ago, then damn… all I can say is, you’re missing out on some great stuff. And I’d un-kindly ask that you take your negativity elsewhere to a far off secluded forum where you can whine amongst yourselves whilst you’re stuck in the medieval era, rather than making every comment section a broken record of the same crap you’ve been saying for the last 20 years about every band that dares to not be the same 5 metal bands you’ve been licking the asses of for decades. We real, actual music fans, who are simply open to enjoying whatever and whoever because they sound good and make us feel something, regardless of ‘categorisation’ and ‘rules’, will be out in the world discovering and enjoying cool and fun music, embracing progress and innovation, whilst you wallow in your ignorant, elitist misery.
I love this channel because you're not one of those metal gatekeepers and you always cheer on newer bands! Sleeptoken is imo the best metal band right now
I don't like Sleep Token but I don't give a shit if others like them. I just don't consider them metal. I have nothing against fusion but to be considered metal then metal should be the dominate genre in your sound, with Sleep Token metal feels like an after thought.
Anyone else have a rock station that just got stuck in the 90’s and 00’s? It’s ridiculous how much new talent is out there but the industry continues to pump vintage and classic rock on us.
Saw tool back in 19. Everything I dreamt of and more. Saw ST at Red Rocks. They're on the same level. I've accepted them, we get to see the next evolution, and I'm here for it.
I like how the big festivals have like 6 stages with each stage having a headliner. It’s like if you deathcore you have 8 deathcore bands playing one stage.
Give newer bands a chance. Sleep Token is great choice imo. They have a pretty unique sound and "popular" or not, the rock/metal world always benefits from bands with some originality. I really don't see why people who are fans of the genres would view this as something negative.
So I just went and listened to a couple songs, I don't believe they are for me personally. That's cool let 'em headline and get that, I'm a little surprised bands like Korn or Bullet for my Valentine aren't headlining but then again Bullet hasn't put anything out worth listening to since 2010 IMO. and I haven't really jammed Korn since about then as well so yeah screw it... give it to the new kids.
@@TunzoFun did you check the summoning and vore from them? those are the heaviest ones on their latest album at least, but if you did and isnt for you thats cool too!
If anything, Green Day should be more controversial - yes they're a huge band, but I always thought Download was metal and hard-rock oriented, and Green Day are definitely not as loud and energetic as they once were
You're joking right? Arguably one of the biggest band the world has ever known, and the also almost never do festivals, typically they sell out stadiums instead. You people must really not have anything better to do than whine.
@@SilverImmortal3633 That’s fine you can think whatever you like. But they’re still one of the biggest rock bands to ever exist. They sell out stadiums.
I’m here for Sleep Token’s ascent! They stepped up their production even between the US headline dates last year and this current Euro tour. I’ll be coming from California and I know many others will as well.
I'm a metal fan and bought my first metal album in 1986, Anthrax's Spreading the Disease if you're interested. I've loved metal since then and over the years have seen the "big" metal bands and more small bands that I can count live, I've been to the Monsters of Rock at Castle Donnington back in the 90s, I've seen metal almost die (other than us fans keeping it alive), then nu metal arrived and blew up again bringing metal to a new scene. A few years ago I heard Sleep Token and they blew me away again. I've now seen them 5 times live and they're absolutely incredible-bringing creativity to the genre of metal..yes metal! This week I've seen Sleep Token live in The O2 twice and tonight I'm going to see Obituary and Sadus live. One thing that I *have not* enjoyed over the years has been the *constant* snobbery of some gatekeeping fans. I remember when some said thrash wasn't metal, when some said nu metal wasn't metal, when some said progressive metal wasn't metal, etc etc etc, and now they're complaining again. Honestly absolutely 100% always f*ck those guys. They add nothing. Metal forever! Worship!
Sleep Token’s music crosses many genres, something for everyone. Seen them live at Wembley when Vessel was sick and they still put on an awesome performance. A ‘Rock’ solid band with excellent stage presence from all 4 members. Well done Sleep Token, you thoroughly deserve this moment.
I absolutely love Sleep Token. It took a minute to get past some of the genre mixing, but they so it so seamlessly. They really are the future of rock.
It just makes no sense to me to get angry over bands using backing tracks when one of their musicians literally cannot play due to health issues. Sleep Token is a vocally driven band, it sucks but they're option was to either cancel the show or use backing tracks and it's not unusual for modern metal acts (even the older ones) to use backing tracks.
The phrase “overnight success” is a lot more literal these days. Crazy to see just how quickly bands can blow up and in this case, it’s well deserved, but I think it’s difficult for people to accept. Bands don’t necessarily have to slum in a van for 10 years before they get a break anymore and that removes a bit of the romanticism for the fans. I don’t listen to Sleep Token but they are talented and unique. There’s an undeniable demand for them and I think this is a good move for Download.
Eh...maybe some are but for the most part the people that hate Sleep Token are elitists that hate on everything currently popular in metal, including Falling in Reverse. Every time I open a comment section under a metal post I feel like I see the same exact people over and over again hating on Sleep Token, Falling in Reverse, Bad Omens, Spiritbox, Slaughter to Prevail, Lorna Shore, Knocked Loose and basically every core band in existence. As they usually seem to have poor vocabulary, instead of expressing constructive criticism and making argumented points, they usually resort to words and expressions such as "posers", "cringe", "pop music", "they suck", "the most overrated band in the world", etc.
Sleep token is kinda just a cringe version of Ghost, so it's really not for me, but getting upset about a headliner of a festival of several bands is silly.
Really happy for Sleep Token, only recently discovered them & I'm really enjoying their music. Hoping they will do more shows in UK after Download so I can see em
The tour in December is huge, multiple 20,000+ venues sold out. Il be seeing them in Leeds and then at Download in June. (Note: The last time I seen them was in Leeds supporting Architects (2022), it’s incredible to see the growth they have achieved in such a short space of time) I’m very excited!
Seeing them in Leeds in Dec too! Haven't seem them live as of yet, my fiancé is the ST fan, however, since he introduced me to their artistry I have been hooked! Now my Daughter loves them, and the majority of our combined musical taste means we are definitely heading to Download next year, as a family unit 🥳
Sleep token & bad omens suck! Ill quit going to concerts period before i go to anything with bands like that. My own children wont play that crap in my house
Veey much deserved for sleep token. I'm not a fan of their music but anyone can literally research and see how fast they sold out Wembley arena, how fast their tour sells out (mostly within 30 minutes of tickets going on sale). They are a big band and I'm really glad they finally are headlining download. For me it was either gonna be sleep token or ghost, both have a very loyal large fan base. Very much looking forward to all three new headliners and not the usual bands
They are going to crush Download. Just like Bring Me did last year and Fall Out Boy this year. Just a bunch of the old guard moaning like always. They will get a massive crowd and bring loads of younger people into the fest. Agree re Bad Omens - I bet they headline in the next 3-4 years. You should definitely head over to the fest, it is one of the best in the world.
@ very different fests. Wacken and Hellfest are metal fests while Download is an alternative fest that books - rock, metal, punk, pop-punk and most other things in the alternative scene. I see Download as a fest that falls in the space between Rock Wertcher/Pinkpop and Hellfest/Graspop.
Sleep Token are one of the only bands who incorporate so many genre's of rock under one umbrella in musical history. They are musical geniuses. Enjoy, you festival goers. Peace and love to you all.
Sleep token is a UK band, and this festival is in the UK, makes perfect sense for them to headline.

My guess would be that their song structure and length just isn't ideal for radio play sadly.
Ich wünsche ich wäre da gewesen. Ich hoffe einfach dass ich nächstes Jahr zu RAR kann

Basically every venue ST played in the US on the last tour sold out within minutes. They could fill 80% of any stadium show at this point
I can tell you’re a true fan of music.
Similar experience. Saw them last year at an even smaller venue than that packed to the brim. Enjoyed the show but left thinking "they needed a bigger stage". Fast forward a year at Radio City Music Hall and it's like, yea, this is what it should have been. This feels right.
Love seeing bands like sleep token, bad omens, etc getting the love they deserve.
love? they are bad bands....
@agzofficial8594 I listened to that trash on your channel and want my view count back. You couldn't tell a good bad if it hit you in the face.

Agree 💯
Me too...only just into them after hearing my daughter play them!!😁🤘
@ninanightnurse I was actually watching a hilarious RUclips channel that talks about awful movies from Tubi and things like that and the girl started one video talking about Sleep Token, playing a tiny snippet of Chokehold and Take me back to Eden and it sounded so great, I tracked the band down and listened to the full album immediately. Lmao I owe Kennie big time for that considering she normally never mentions music.

Well said!!!
If only THE RADIO could evolve... Gatekeepers are keeping innovation and fresh blood down.
And what’s worse bet a lot of the ‘gatekeepers’ don’t even attend the festival. How many on social media have said “I’m not going” So, don’t go. Give your ticket to someone who wants to be there
@@lexdavies3656 Absolutely. Their voice is the loudest, in the same way their echochamber of old acts are being played.
gotta love listening to the same top 1000 songs over the past 40 years on the "classic rock radio"

@@ernestorodriguez817100% I find it funny that “rock” radio stations act like Metallica, Redhot chilli peppers, green day and nickleback are the best bands ever but they still only play the same 3 songs from them and they are always 15+ years old
if they are such great bands play some new songs from them… but at the same time don’t cause those bands all suck
And they headline one of the biggest rock festivals in Germany too. Rock am Ring. I really hope I can make it there
I’m sorry? Controversy? What’s controversial? I’m sick of people having to make everything into a drama 🙄
just saw them in germany, frankfurt past weekend.
@ On some level yes. They were headlining festivals by the time Master of Puppets came out if my memory serves me.
Congrats Sleep Token. Super stoked for them. I love their music. 🤘
ST deserve their success. They are amazing live and I can't wait to see them again at any cost or festival.
I love ❤ Sleep Token. So many incredible songs. I hope to see them live some day.
Sleep Token deserves this wtf.

Metalheads will always find something to complain about - they complain at the lack of new headliners yet also complain when new ones are announced. Sleep Token absolutely deserve the headline slot and I'm pleased that they got it!
This and Spiritbox opening for Linkin Park are the best news of this week.
If you like Likin Park, Check out Black Out The Sun! They’re brand new and just dropped their first single called Weapons of Mass Media

Linkin Park died with Chester imo.
Jeezus Eats Feces is the only band worth seeing in that lineup.
@@buddykaiser2380 Nah. No one will ever replace Chester, but Emily is killing it.
since the late 90s every album that Iron Maiden has done all sounds the same!!
Well said! 💯
I've never even heard of Sleep Token. Off to listen to a few tracks....
They're very good. Hypnosis and Alkaline are great songs.
The summoning was one of my favorite songs of last year. Also, if you like Rock ballads then the song Euclid is a must listen
They’re just a Pop band with distorted guitars ever so often
Chokehold
They're actually phenomenal. I wasn't a fan at first, but they grew on me quick. They just aren't "heavy" all the time, so people whine. People would change their minds if they'd actually go see these dudes live. They are a totally new take on music imo
People should be more outraged with those Old Aunties from Green Day headlining.
Why, they're both pop bands?
@@mablesfatalfable6021 they're pop punk

Sleep Token are going to be old-school enormous. I mean, absolutely gigantic. They are totally unique, and, most importantly, they have the songs.
The only other band even vaguely close is Slaughter To Prevail, but the difference is, their next album not only has to be an absolute banger, they've got to have songs good enough to cross over. If they don't, they may miss their chance.
Just this Tuesday i got to see them live, it was sooo good and i am so glad they are growing even further
Congratulations Sleep Token. So happy for them. They so deserve this. Worship to them. Love them, and I could never get enough of them.
So rare!
Buddy's right, Sleep Token is well deserving of being headliners.🤘
I think Sleep Token deserves the chance to be a headliner. I mean I love a lot of legacy bands and it is very rare when I listen to bands that are younger than a decade (or more like a few decades), but when I 1st checked out Sleep Token they caught me by surprise. Vessel has an amazing vocal range and technique and they have a solid musical background. Let the kids shine.

I completely agree that is awesome seeing newer bands starting to headline...... even if I think Sleep Token is the Bud Light of metal bands lol.

I hear you, but tracks are super lame across the board. And I say that as a fan of a band like FIR. I like them IN SPITE of their use of tracks.
Overnight success after 7 years!
People hating on Sleep Token are the same ones who think Falling in Reverse is a good band.
But trying to knock down one band to big up another is just sad 😂
They're both awesome.
I don't think either band is all that. 😂

Wacken and Hellfest are better in my opinion.
