    When I switched from tent to hammock I've been very impressed with how open and free camping under a tarp is. Check out some hammock tarp designs maybe for inspiration. I have plastic KAM snaps on my doors on my winter tarp.

    Cool ideas! Years ago I had a GoLite Lair 1 shaped tarp. I took it out in the rain a couple of times and it kept me dry, but I could feel the spray wafting in. If I’m not mistaken it had a “beak” option that you could buy separately to fully enclose it and give the tent something of a vestibule. Instead of that I made the beak out of some scrap Tyvek I scavenged from a construction site. There was a bit of overlap, but not as much as I would have liked. Once I used the beak as a sort of rain shawl. Later I tried to replicate the way that I rigged but I couldn’t figure it out.

    Love it! and you're better with a sharpie than I expected! lol I've used my hex hammock tarp in a similar way and considered using a larger one with "doors" as an option as well. I'm looking forward to seeing what you come up with!

    This is very similar to a setup I do with a 10x10(3x3). Minus the closed end. I really like your idea of having a tarp that encloses, but still remains modular. I’m excited to see what you come up with.

    Consider what ZPacks has done to close their zipperless tents. The bottom corner of the door, and the bottom corner of the side wall could each come down to one tent stake. You would have quick disconnects on each guyout line. Disconnect the door to get in and out, disconnect the side wall to turn the tarp into a bivouac. An overlapping piece of fabric the length of the door and wall joint, could close the open joint when the side is down, and be held in place with some velcro, or the overlapping piece of fabric could be on the door and could be guyed out to another stake. One man's thoughts. :>)

    I remember JupiterHikes talking about the Yama Cirriform last year, that's the closest thing I can think of to what you describe. Excited to see what you come up with!

      I have a cirriform 2p that I used on a section of the gdt. Very close indeed to what I’m imagining, but would like the full lean to pitch option.

    Very cool love DIY stuff, i've made things myself and nice thing is, Im not afraid to go back and alter them, ongoing process, never perfect! Hehe. First thing I thought of here are, zipper less door panels like on the z packs tent? (I believe) They just cross a bit, not truly closed. Look forward to see what you come up with.

    As a long-time tarp camper (1968), this is something in all sincerity I just don't get. The most versatile shelter you can own is simply a square tarp. So why mess with success?
    I have a very light 8.5x8.5 sil-poly tarp that I use for summer and long-distance backpacking (PCT). I use multiple configurations. I use the flying diamond the most because I'm usually a hammock camper (12'+ ridge length). I also use a plow-point, two different tarp-tent configurations, and a modified A-frame (usually in a diamond configuration). This tarp is a little tight for the tarp tent setups (I'm 6'), so if I'm likely to need a tarp tent, I size up to a 10x10 (the best all around size). This is my shelter system year-round (I've used it at -20f multiple times). I also have a 12x12 for those Arab sheik outings.😄

      Trying to get it lighter, more compact and storm worthy. The white tarp is 6 oz lighter than and equivalent square or rectangle just because is has less material.

    Looks like a hammock tarp with enclosed sides but on the ground.
    edit: look up trekkertent (scottish) - they do stealth 1, 1.5 and 2 as well as other kinds

    • @KaneDoesOutdoors
      @KaneDoesOutdoors  2 месяца назад

      No, it’s just too many bits and pieces. I’m sure it would be a lot of fun in miserable rainy fall conditions, especially if you were camped at one location for an extended period eg hunt camp. I just don’t have time to build up another system like that.

    Cool concept! Can you make it like a Duplex, but longer (or wider if you will and basically rotated 90° so that you sleep with a pole at your head and foot end?

    • @KaneDoesOutdoors
      @KaneDoesOutdoors  2 месяца назад +1

      That’s a pup tent design with two flat ends. Definitely easier to make than if they are angled.

    Is the issue with your current tarp that it is too big (being 11 feet long) or is it that the current tarp doesn’t offer sufficient weather protection? I actually just ordered materials to sew my own tarp as well, I’m really looking forward to the rest of your design process!

    • @KaneDoesOutdoors
      @KaneDoesOutdoors  2 месяца назад +1

      A bit of both. At 11 ft long the side panels really catch wind. With closed ends you can make the entire shelter smaller while being more storm worthy.

      @@KaneDoesOutdoors Have a look at the 'doors' we use on our hammock tarps. You can see examples at Dutchware Gear (also great hardware, like door anchors) and Warbonnet Outdoors.
      My tarps are on a continuous ridge-line that makes setup a snap, I use Dutchware continuous ridge lines with his awesome hardware like 'wasps' and 'dutch hooks'. with his pre-made guy-lines that have his 'ring worms' to adjust lines. Then I use his 'door anchors to close the ends in bad weather.
      It'll all fits in a double ended stuff sack that lives on the ridge-line.
      Best set-up I've had in 40 years. No knots to tie. Ultralight, and it goes up or down in less than 2 minutes - if you have trees.

    This doesn’t meet all your criteria but you may draw inspiration from the Peax Equipment Origami TNT tarp.

      @KaneDoesOutdoors I have actually considered cutting it up to just a tarp for the option of pitching it higher in decent weather as well as buttoning it up when needed. Look forward to see what you come up with.👍

    I switched to tarp camping a few years ago and my go-to pitch is the style shown here by Andreas Muller: ruclips.net/video/ZbjFoq7F-As/видео.html -- I've done it using a trekking pole too which made it lower and better at handling higher winds. You forego a full floor in that config but but it is huge inside.

    Nice video and project! what you are talking about reminds me if a shelter that a guy built years ago it's called "Abri Olivier" and now it's being made by Tipik Tentes in France. You can find all of the patterns online if you would like to build it yourself. I can be closed in all sides. For the low side you can either use a hiking pole outside or a arche like pole. And a higher pole for the entrance. It's a flat tarp also so it can be pitched like a lean to or many other way. No zippers too. Anyway you should definitely check it out it seems to me that it's checking all of your requirements. Olivier crossed Iceland with it and it's super strong in winds while being less than 400g in 20d silnylon. Just google "abri olivier tipik" :)
