What I find most fascinating about learning other languages is the different common expressions that are used to convey the same basic messages. Like at 3:37 the direct translation means "this film upholds a true face" while the english translation is "this film based on a true story". The direct translation makes some sense in English, but certainly isn't the way an English speaker would say it. Really makes you wonder about how the language you speak influences the way you think.
I also liked those: - Die Wolke - The Edukators - Sophie Scholl - Die letzten Tage - Rosenstrasse - The Counterfeiters - Das Boot and "Beloved Sisters" (2014) is still in my watch list..
"Der Himmel über Berlin" is really good, I have the opening poem by Peter Handke in the original German version as well as in the Spanish and the English versions in my notebook. Thank you Anja for the suggestions.
I LOVED “The Lives Of Other”. I lost it at the very end. Just thinking about it gives me goose skin. Downfall was also incredible. Bruno Ganz! Simply amazing.

Hi, I'm so glad I found your channel! I'm having some struggle learning german and I decided to look in the internet to learn german easier and I think your video may help!
I also like Wings of Desire which is the movie City of Angels is based on. It has the same actor from Downfall :) Also, Stations of the Cross is really good for it's unusual cinematography and structure. The camera remains stationery throughout most of the movie so it feels like your watching a play. I can't decide if it's pro- or anti-religion, perhaps it depends on your own point of view.
Very excellent suggestions, Anja! I have already watched a few of the ones mentioned here by Anja: "Good Bye Lenin," "Das Leben der Anderen," and "Christiane F." All very good films. I would also include to the list "Das Boot" and "Die Welle" and also Herzog's "Nosferatu" if you can find it!
Nosferatu the Vampyre (1979) is one of my favorite movies from ANY country, and it is my favorite Vampire movie. Interestingly enough it was filmed in English and German simultaneously (I prefer the German version.) Everyone here probably knows that, but I thought I'd mention it anyway! Directed by Werner Herzog, starring Bruno Ganz (who played Hitler in Der Untergang)
The movie ' Das Experiment ' stands for the Lucifer Effect : How Good People Turn Evil based on a Stanford Prison Experiment (SPE) in 1971: a prison simulation study which had to be discontinued after only six days due to several distressing outcomes ... I picked up the word Übertrieben: Appreciation to the amusing german learning provided in this channel!
Christiane F is my fave because it introduced me to David Bowie! Wonderful list, as well. And the suggestions on the comments are helpful as well. My suggestion: WINGS OF DESIRE
there was a *very good* German mini-series about the WWII war in Russia called "Generation War" that was one of the best views of WWII told from the perspective of 5 young adults who "came of age" in the movie... -i very much liked it (especially the English subtitles). -i am born and raised in the USA, but grow very tired of all WWII movies being written from a "US slant", so was very happy to see something come from Germany itself with slightly different views concerning those times (though it does a very good job at illustrating how difficult and ugly those times were). -another one I own like that is "Das Boot". -i am glad you came out with a list of movies that are about more than WWII!! -thank you for that!!
P.S. when German movies have English subtitles, i also think it is a *very good* way to learn German language and culture... (coming from English-speaking background)
"Who am I?", this is my first German movie that I had seen... und es ist superrrrRrrrr! this is about computer hacking and a twist at the end of the film.. :)

Das Froehe Deutsche Kino was grossartig.
Honig im Kopf is a really nice movie, highly recommend. Movie itself is really good, and especially I love operator's work - the views of Europe in this film are amazing
Andere filme: 1. Ein Lied von Liebe und Tod (1999), about the story behind Gloomy Sunday song 2. 303 (2018), about two young student who have a trip together and talk about live.
I recommend "Bis ans Ende der Welt". Although its language is English, so it's kinda irrelevant here. But technically, it is a very German movie. Make sure to watch the director's cut, it is 280 minutes long :) It is a slow movie, but you won't ever forget it.
Die Welle, diesen Film fand ich sehr interessant, weil man damit zeigen kann, wieso eine einzige Person eine große Masse von Leute überzeugen und kontrollieren könnte, ohne sie zu verpflichten.
Coole Liste. Dieser Amerikaner empfiehlt auch Phoenix (2014), Revanche (2008), Stroszek (1978), Alice in den Städten (1974), Angst essen Seele auf (1974), M (1931), Der blaue Engel (1930). Danke, Anja.
This leaves out all those heimatfilme of the 1950's. They feature singing and the countryside. They are totally German. And then there are various Fritz Lang films such as M and his Dr. Mabuse films. Plus, there is the big budget WW2 film of Baron Munchausen. It's sort of Germany's answer to The Wizard of Oz. Most of the WW2 films were non-political entertainments that copied Hollywood films, especially musicals.
Dear Anja, can you make a video with a short description of , for example, Good Bye Lenin? I mean what you think about the film, who are the main chracters and some words about the plot of the film? IN German, of course :) I'm interested in the way how germans describe their opinion. Thanks a lot! Vielen Dank!
M - Eine Stadt sucht einen Mörder by Fritz Lang. Fantasic movie and one of my 2 number 1 movies (yes, that's right, the other being the British movie The Third Man).
