Stock ABS in the bin, Bosch Motorsport Australia M5 ABS system in its place, sprint racing and more in this #update.
Across a range of classes the local sprint racing scene contains a mixture of cars from a Ford RS200 to Porsche, Aston Martin and Lamborghini GT spec cars and similar. We run none of those cars but a Honda CRX/KRX and Toyota GT86/SR86.
Andre runs you through the day's sprint racing, which included a punt from Ben in the other HPA car, who was racing on a different track layout previously and had a bit of a brain fart trying to go straight ahead instead of hard right. No significant damage, they still even share an office.
The big news is an ABS upgrade to the SR86. Given it already has a stock Toyota ABS system, you might wonder, what's the point? Well, we will cover this upgrade with the data that will show you exactly that in time. At this stage, we're hoping to have it good to go for the 2nd round of the endurance racing season in September, only because Andre has a family commitment that sadly clashes with the first round.

The FJ40 project is on hold at the moment and not being a race vehicle but rather a street vehicle on 35" tyres there won't be a whole lot directly comparable in a super useful way. We might have something else pop up in the future though that lends itself to such a discussion a bit better 😎 - Taz.

Been following formawerx for a loooong time as soon as you said the key that’s the first words that came out of my mouth before you finished 🤣. Love their work and am planning on getting one for my s13 build
Appreciate the review of Bosch Motorsport ABS. You introduce and advertise the other products in style, really top class, and I actually want to watch it. As opposed to me skipping adverts in other RUclips channels. Now that I know about it, I'll fit the Bosch Motorsport ABS to my Elise S1 in the near future, as the engine will put out 300 bhp in the near future - K20 engine swap of course.
Look at the other comments for better value kits
@ryan - Better value depends on what you want from your ABS system. if you simply want cheaper, yes, there are other options that are cheaper in outright cost, but they are certainly not the same.
In that vein, I guess the stock system from the GT86 is up for sale 😂 - Taz.
Looking forward to see your progress with this system. Looking into getting a M4 or M5 system for my time attack car and any information and knowledge is welcome.
Are you planning on doing any courses on this system? I have a bunch of your courses and I have learned alot!
I just installed the Bosch M5 kit. The pre-terminated harness is a PITA. Some wires are too short, most are way too long and there is no way to pass it through the firewall. I ended up cutting the harness in half and putting a firewall connector in it. Neater install and gives an opportunity to shorten excess wire length from the middle.
Also the wheel speed sensors are a bit picky working with the factory tone rings (on a BMW e36). Can share more info if you like.
Not sure if your message was directed at me but here’s my spec - using Porsche/ VAG bearings with built in encoder / reluctor ring
These will then accept bmw 5 stud flanges or Porsche GT3 RS Cup / motorsport center locks and driveshafts. Fitted to a bespoke alloy upright . There are only 2 types of abs / wheel speed sensor as far as I’m aware Hall effect and the other one I can’t remember .
I have a funny feeling the bosch M5 will not be anything special just a few software/ firmware updates .pot will just regulate a parameter on the ecu for adjustment.
Later bmw M4 etc uses a very similar abs motor to the one in this vid so was thinking it may be a generic high end performance unit anyway just with a potentiometer / uprated motor speed .
Think most have a yaw / g sensor anyway and the one in this vid looks standard .
Can’t really make any more comments as I haven’t gone deep into research .
I wish I could post photo, very hard to describe. There are two types of factory tone rings, depending on the hub. FAG uses a pressed sheet metal tone ring. The ABS sensor does not trigger in either axial or radial configuration. Either the curve of the tooth shape or lack of ferrous material in the thin sheet metal doesn't trigger it.
The SKF tone ring is like a 'ladder' ring. Made from 2mm thick steel it is a band with the two outer sides holding teeth or 'rungs' across it. The M5 sensors work on this only when placed radially in the centre if the tone ring. When placed axially, the continuous metal band looks like one long, continuous tooth and doesn't trigger.
So, for my application the rears were ok (axial mount on the SKF style) but I needed make my own front tone rings as the only mounting option for the sensor was axially and neither off-the-shelf hub worked.
Cheers for sharing your experience! We're not that deep into the install yet but will be interesting to see what Brandon and Andre think of that side of things. We do plan to focus more on the performance given documenting the likes of installation pretty much doubles the time it takes to get it done without any cameras involved 😅, but I'm sure it will come up somewhere as part of the journey - Taz.
@@hags568 yeah kinda hard to describe via text . I am under the understanding there are 3 types of abs trigger , the ladder type you explained , this is on e36 rear driveshafts and some 964 997 Porsches and very common, the second is more like a toothed trigger like on the end of a crank , same principle as far as I’m aware . The third is the type built into the wheel bearing end face . The latter may work on a different principle but must sure . I have a few bearings that have this type of trigger, not sure if these are magnetic as there are very fine and presume may need a more accurate/ sensitive abs sensor. .
Not looked into anything in detail as of yet so not that clued up , but need to find out for myself anyway for our project. Hope this helps
@@hags568 one last thing , I may have to have some laser cut discs and providing the tooth count is the same and diameter. Not too hard and a fairly cheap solution

Lots of new bikes HAVE to come with abs, just not always adjustable or disable-able
@@ElPants21 it would be great if someone cracked the firmware of one of those units… make it adjustable, able to be disabled, CAN output for wheel speeds, maybe G, lean and yaw, there’s so much possibilities

I’m personally interested in the abs . Here in the Uk we run the old E36 M3 unit ( ATE) that can actually be slightly mapped for better performance .
Or the E46 mk60 abs .
We’re now building an e36 GTR with an S58 M4 engine, do you or anyone reading this comment know of an alternative abs that can be mapped / pot added to adjust the sensitivity like the Bosch motorsport abs ?
Don’t want to sound cheap but we’re blowing the budget on the engine and ecu so a cheaper alternative would suit us for now. .
Considering using the abs from the BMW M4 but can’t find any data on it. .
Handy if you mention anything like this for everyone else too .

Cheers mate! We're really excited about this. Anyone we have interviewed with a Bosch Motorsport ABS unit generally ranks it among one of the best investments they have made to their vehicle. One fella also made a cheeky comment on a post that despite the entry price being high for a lot of us, they also have good resale value if you ever decide to exit the game for any reason too, so less of a depreciating asset compared to an engine build etc that's for sure 😂
Help wise, nothing to add options wise beyond what you mentioned in your original comment noting I would say they really are quite different to the Bosch units in adjustability and capability so I wouldn't really view them as a direct alternative, but rather just a different ABS option with its own pros and cons. That's just my opinion. Obviously, they are also priced accordingly comparatively too.

As this setup in particular becomes more popular people are saying it is getting a bit more expensive to source, but with ABS being on every vehicle these days no doubt more and more options will pop up over time that are similar.
We are working on a motorsport plumbing course which will cover brake lines (and fuel lines, AN fitting etc) which Brandon here as spent quite some time on for the FJ40 project compared to the SR86. If you don't start things very soon, worth a look for that course down the line if that is knowledge you want some guidance on too - Taz.
@@hpa101 yeah nice one guys , I must admit your channel is the most down to earth , technical one there is . For guys like me or people with bigger budgets there’s still always something new to learn however intelligent we think we are .
What’s more important is the level of professionalism filtering down to the normal guy in the street due to this .
No worries if there’s a conflict of interests showing the Bosch system that restricts you maybe offering alternatives , I can appreciate that.

BMW E36 GTR with S58 m4 engine, double wishbone pushrod suspension, front and rear subframes , Alcon GT calliper’s, Porsche 991 cup brakes and a bespoke body 850 - 900kg target . Ecu is the next big hurdle and expense as it’s direct injection and twin HP pumps . Haltech don’t do one so it’s either motec , syvecs , life or cosworth / pi . Hence the restricted budget on the ABS .

Since you are based in the UK it might be worth looking into SCS Delta ABS. Affordable, but I haven't heard much info about it. A motorsportflashed Bmw mk60 is probably better, but that is just my gutt feeling.
My audi a4 2012 has similar pump which failed and i brought it home, i even have the connector that came with a used unit i purchased.
Now that i know bosch motorsport does this pump, i will buy another used and buy accessories from them and play with it.
The pump itself isn't really the key feature to be fair, but it's a start 😎 - Taz.
The release bearing is under constant contact no?
How are you getting on with the FJ40's ABS - can't recall which you're using for it - and how are you getting on with the LVV chaps?
The project is on hold, back to race cars. Andre still has the letter from the LVV chaps giving the green light from their end. Will update in time when there is something to report. In the meantime ABS into the SR86 and the CRX has had/is getting a lot of work done to prevent it from tearing itself apart further 😅 - Taz.
Are you guys running oem pedals in the 86 or a pedal box?
Im switching to a floor mounted pedal box on my jzx100 chaser and would like to keep the oem abs so kinda figuring a way to make it work
Or am i better to ditch the abs completely
We are just fitting a PE Racing pedal box now, however, we are also fitting a Bosch Motorsport ABS unit as well.
I would guess that the stock pedals with ABS might be better than a pedal box and no ABS if that's what you're considering, otherwise a Bosch Motorsport unit or the likes of the MK60 setup would be a good investment to benefit from a pedal box and not lose out on braking performance via ABS.

You forgot to mention that Haltech actually give a sht about their customers and dealers , I contacted loads of ECU companies about my build, most of them just wanted to get rid of me - for some reason I came to Haltech last (Im a cheapskate) after trying Motec, Link, ECU Master and a few others who were not interested - I was fully supported by Haltech, educated and looked after by both Haltech and their partners, I would have scrapped my car and given up on my dreams and a decade of work - if it was not for Haltech saving the day.
That's great to hear man! Well great and not great, but at the end of the day stoked you found a company that could get you sorted and keep your project moving along. What model of Haltech did they recommend for you in the end? - Taz.

I think ABS is cheating. whats next? traction controll in circuit racing? And after that autonomous driving?
That’s up to the regulations of the series. I’d agree but if it’s allowed then may as well use it.
