Each state (typically through the Secretary of State's office) registers the names of LLCs and corporations. To check, you have to look at the database of the state where you want to register the LLC. Here is a link on how to search in each state - startingyourbusiness.com/is-your-name-available-how-to-do-a-free-llc-name-search/.
Also, even though the LLC name may be available to register, be sure to check for trademarks - startingyourbusiness.com/should-i-trademark-my-business-name/
      Hope that helps!

Can you use an inactive llc for your business name?

Each state handles registering an inactive LLC differently. In most cases, they require the name to be inactive for 2-3 years and then it's available to register. Others require getting a signed form from the original LLC owner giving the rights to you.
You can check with the Secretary of State to see what their rules are. I should be be able to find out if you want to let me know the name of the state.
      Thanks!

@@Keluvorangesoda06 Generally, an LLC name with the Inactive status is available to register after 1 year. An Inactive/UA status means the name is held and may not be available, even after a year.
