Maybe this is because I come from a kickboxing background, but I thought 90% of the time the practical way to land a hook is throwing it long like this. Like if I'm gonna close and throw a 1,2,3 they're usually gonna try to back up and keep range throughout that combination. So I gotta step and keep the punches long if I wanna connect.

Still having trouble throwing the left hook. Don’t have a heavy bag or speed bag so I spend most of my time shadow boxing.

That's how I throw my fucking hooks!!! But i dont think the coaches at the gym sees this. They want me to wind up more.... sort of frustrating

u need to throw it very quick and straight like an arrow

I think it would be most like what be called a left cross..
My coach is constantly trying to get me to throw wider hooks, but I can't generate power from them, the same way I can straighter hooks. How do I get around this issue with him?
I have never once seen this punch thrown in a fight by any pro boxer.

Hook palm facing you generate power and it use for short distance but hook palm facing down can be used in short distance and long distance both are effective in there own way
I've actually just trained myself to do this while I was working on the bag 2 days ago kind of having dejavu but I thought it worked well and watching this video just proved it to work for sure

I think the boxer Shawn Porter uses that type of hook sometimes coach, I thought it was a jab with a twist to generate more power! My only concern is that the palm down hook is harmful to the wrist, or is that true? Either way thank you for your excellent videos
No way is that true. I know everybody is different but palm down hooks are very standard. Lomachenko throws a lot of palm down close range hooks. The verticle fisted hook is good at long range. Palm down, long range, would probably hurt you though.

Good tip think handy for lunging hooks like Roy Jones used to do,but me personally think lamon Brewster video off hook is spot on loads power way he shows it,and hook really is for close range finishing fight either with liver shot or taking there head off,so if your missing the hook from that close not being taught right,tony bellow good with left hook these days,

Do you have a video on how to improve power for orthodox fighters ( or as myself an old guy having fun in the barn ) . My left is hard snapping quick thunder left jab my right is slow and lacking in power especially my rear hook to body and head . Any suggestions to help would be greatly appreciated . It’s called the 6 inch hook. A lot of Japanese fighters do that

My coach Ralph Ruiz from El Paso used to teach the hook like that too. He would tell me go straight to the target.. Old School Boxing is the best school..

Yes coach i agree, i found out the left power jab as you say is very effective .
It isn't telegraphed either, you seem to hide your shoulder, especially when you dipped to your left.
The thing that amazed me on that was the training partner didn't even flinch or blink once.
Reminds me of the European hook like Wladimir Klitschko used to throw.

+Coach Anthony I remember a few months ago I was looking over some old fights at the jab and as I kinda counted how many jabs and stuff was being thrown I couldn`t be sure if they were jabs or hooks, so I don`t think the punch is that rare, can you name any world champs that you have seen use, I know GGG does a lot of different things with his jabs and he probably throws this shot.
Great video coach, I’ve used this before. It helps with that in between hooking ranger of short hook palm down/long hook palm sideways. Or facing a guy that moves there head a lot,.. you just wanna touch him with more then a pawing jab. You’re body tends to come with the punch. Kinda like a cross between short hook and stiff jab.
