  • I recently picked up a used scroll saw, and noticed an issue with the blade tension bolt. After disassembling (and partially reassembling) the saw, the problem became apparent. The threads on the stock bolt were stripped. To repair it, I used a piece of 1/4 - 20 all thread and a nut (you could use a long bolt). The top wedge bar was drilled and threaded to match the bolt. The bottom was drilled to allow it to move freely on the bolt. I managed to use the original handle. The original bolt is reversed thread, so this repair changes the direction in which you tighten or loosen the blade.
    Remember to be safe and use the proper safety equipment when you are working with power tools.

    Excellent video! I've been leery about opening mine up in search of a better way of lubing the bearings (vs the recommended 24 hr 'seepage' process) so I was primarily looking for disassembly/reassembly instructions to make sure internal parts didn't fall off and create a problem with reassembly. Looks like no problems! Nice job refabbing the tensioner bolt, also! Thanks for the vid!

      You're welcome. I may need to show the bearings some attention because my scroll saw shakes like crazy.

      @@muddyfences5559 Mine's relatively new. The instructions call for laying it on its side and dribbling a little light oil onto the bearing pins and letting it 'seep' overnight, then flip it over and repeat the process on the other side. First after a 10 hour break-in, then every 50 hrs there after. lol Who's got time for all that?! Hence, I wanna crack it open & see if I can shorten the process. As for your vibration, maybe a counter balance issue? Mine was rock solid until I switched to the pinless blade adapters. They introduced some vibration. In doing a DIY mod to make the adapters more user friendly, I added just a smidge of weight to the lower adapter and lo & behold, the mod worked great and the vibration subsided. ??? Go figure!

      That's a good point. As much as I like the HF tool prices, the tools can be a mildly frustrating when it comes to quality. What brand of pinless adapters did you go with?

    • @MHFROX
      @MHFROX 5 лет назад

      I used the ones that came with the new machine. Fairly simple once I figured them out and modded the bottom one so it didn't fall off when the tension was released. (I don't guess they allow one to post pics here, but I took my cue for the mod from this video, if I can post it here, but made my own version... ruclips.net/video/MBS6v-l-TYk/видео.html) These same adapters are avail aftermarket, as well...just not sure the brand. A little research should scare 'em up.

    Do you think it is the tension bar out of the top or lower grooves binding up the saw.?

    Great video! Do you recommend purchasing the HF scroll saw? I am undecided between the WEN 3920 and the HF scroll saw. I don't mind maintaining tools and it seems like the HF is straight forward and can be successfully worked on. I can't even find a warranty service facility for the WEN scroll saw. Your opinion is welcomed.

    • @muddyfences5559
      @muddyfences5559  5 лет назад

      I don't know anything about the WEN scroll saw, but I can say the HF model is a low end / entry level scroll saw. It works, but is really poorly balanced and vibrates. I would recommend you spend a bit more for a better quality machine if you plan on a lot of scroll saw work. If it is just occasional, it may be fine.
