I love how that pamphlet says the word "slippy" lol total pittsburgh term! Awesome video by the way!!! Never knew Raccoon hiking camp sites! Keep up the vids!
I love Luke from the outdoor gear review, I'm a member of the wolf pack and now I've found you though him so all is good. I can't get out much due to mobility issues so I'm going to say the same thing I told Luke and that is thank you for bringing the outdoors to me.
I see you are from Moon Township! That's awesome man. I live in Center Township just north of you by about 15 miles. I'd love to meet up and do a hike or two with you. I'm a rookie and might slow you down though. Lol! Love your videos and I want to say they have helped me figure out my ideas for gear and stuff.
Backpacking Adventures (Rob) was the first one I started watching, great vids (got hooked on the Long Trail series) - and it's also where I first learned about Dutch. Then Sintax77 was second-- admired how he did all these solo trips, on weekends, and driving ridiculous distances to get to them.. Shug I found because I did a search on cold weather hammock camping- hard to beat his -40deg vid (for cold factor). Then I found you by doing a search on the Morrison loop, because I had just hiked it the previous weekend.. Btw- (off topic) last night, my wife and I threw up our hammocks (an ENO and a Hennessy) on the sailboat, went from the mast to the steel forestay- while anchored in a creek on the chesapeake bay- 20mph winds, no bugs, no tarps, it was an experience.. Next weekend hopefully is Dolly Sods..
This is the video that got me hooked on your channel, while researching local hikes. After binging your content for a few weeks. I’ve finally come full circle and I just booked a site at raccoon for this Sunday.
I enjoyed your hike. I have seen a meteor shower like you talked about. It was Awesome! After such a strenuous hike I'm surprised you were able to pull yourself out of the sack to even try to watch the meteors. Good job on the video! I have the Thermorest pillow you mentioned in a different video and I love it! Keep the videos coming, and keep sharing food choices because it helps when you pass that along too. I would like to try the chili beef stuff you were talking about. Thanks
Sintax 77 is what got me and my brother out in the woods our first hike for the both of us we 80 miles in the smokeye and had 47 pounds of gear on our backs. Not knowing what to expect 😅 we where miserable but kept pushing. 6 days we did two days of over 20 mile walks and no less then 16 a day and boy thst was a trip. We did 400 miles in that year and since then have hiked every year and learn and grew with sintax 77 but love hiking!!
I did the same trips as you around Pgh. over 40 years ago as a kid in Boy Scouts. There were no bear worries then and backpacking wasn't fun. I really enjoy watching you slog through the mud, rain , snow, poison ivy , flies, ticks . I live in S NV. now and I can sleep out under the stars all year with out any of that good stuff. Have you been swimming a Koosier ? Coldest water in W PA
I found one of these ammo cans recently it was full of kids trinkets and a little notebook. I didn't know anything about geocaching, I'm glad I didn't scavenge it for those ammo cans are cool to own for storage.
Thanks little dude, I had forgotten all about that walk and park, we use to camp and hike there over 40 years ago,, something never change,,, well to much anyway
I'm glad I found your channel, I like it! I think you do a good job, your personable and you don't talk too much-just the right amount haha. And I got super excited that you know who Luke is, from the Outdoor Gear Review. He's one of my favorites. And you said that you thought slippy was a real word, but it must be a Pittsburgh thing? It really must be cause I live less than an hour away and I thought it was a real word too! What area are you from in PA? And keep it up man, i;m looking forward to watching more of your videos.
Bobbi Pease Oh yea, Luke's one of the first people I started watching when I got into hiking, he and Sintax are still my favorites. Slippy should be a word everywhere, but alas just to us Pittsburghers. I'm near the airport in Moon township. Happy to hear people enjoying the channel, and thanks for the compliment, expect new adventures soon, just doing some conditioning with my friend so I can bring him along.
John Davis Glad you liked it. It's going to be really muddy near the downhill section of mineral springs going away from the main road (clockwise).Just a heads up.
Outdoor Adventures that's what I figured because of all the rain. I may just wear my waterproof Merrel hiking boots that are more for colder months. I'd rather have dry feet.
I enjoy your videos. I was wondering which leg of the trail was muddiest or if it is generally wet? I wondered if the Appaloosa segment was muddiest because of horses.
You said to leave a comment if there are other channels we like. I like Kdawgcrazy as well. I also like Sintax77 and The Outdoor Gear review, which you mentioned. I like Kdawgcrazy because he's kinda learning as am I. I feel like I can learn along with him. He's silly sometimes, too. Has a sense of humor. I got started on these because of Sintax77, then TOGR.
3 of us going to give this loop a shot this Saturday into Sunday. Lady on the phone at the park said good luck lol With all the rain Beaver County has gotten the past few days should make it interesting
TriCnty_digger Heard from one of my subscribers a few days ago, that the trail was really muddy. We've gotten a lot of rain the past couple of weeks so just be aware.
I talked to the lady at the park an hour or so ago and she said it is pretty squishy. After listening to all the Beaver County emergency traffic on the scanner and ham radio we are going early Saturday morning to give us lots of time to get to pioneer.
Doing a day hike and can't decide if I should prioritize the Eastern or Western portion of the main loop (starting at the park office). Which side has the nicer trail?
Checkout the UP24. My girl and I use it and it on point with what you are doing. But we also wear ares 24/7 it monitors sleep, steps, and I use it for food intake and calorie count
I came across this video because I'm thinking about hiking raccoon state park. For some reason Google Maps doesn't have all of the trails listed that you used, can I get a map at the Ranger station? I would also like to add that towards the end I got some Blair Witch project vibes lol.
Great channel! I've had to travel to Pittsburgh for work this week and Raccoon is on my way back home tomorrow. unfortunately I only have about 5 hours to hike. Can you give me a recommendation of where to start so I can see some of the best spots in the park? I'm having trouble finding any good information online.
Park at the main office. walk up route 18 until you come a trail head on your LEFT. Take that trail all the way to Sioux camp site. from there head north and follow signs for heron trail. follow heron down to the spillway/dam then right on the road to heritage trail. make a left to stay on heritage and head all the way down to mineral springs. you can take the mineral springs look back to the main office and your car. then go see the lake on your way out. www.dcnr.state.pa.us/cs/groups/public/documents/document/dcnr_003204.pdf
Outdoor Adventures Thanks for the quick reply! I'm looking forward to checking out more of your videos. I live in NE Ohio and it seems like you've covered a lot of PA. I plan on doing the same starting this spring
I'm heading to raccoon creek next weekend. I got camping permits for both camp sites on different nights and was wondering how strict PA is about where you camp. If I have Souix camp site booked Friday but end up staying at the other site would that be a problem?
jdg5086 Really depends on how many people are there. I'm sure the park rangers don't mind but if it's full when you are there then you will have to make camp somewhere else. Personally I've only seen 3/10 groups there though.
kid ringo maybe at the campground by the lake. But if you drive over to the Sioux rustic campground you will have trees breaking up individual sites. But there are no showers and they have compost toilets.
As far as gear reviews go ReviewOutdoorGear (not the same as TOGR) and Black Owl Outdoors are by far my favourites, they're only channels I've seen that actually does (good) reviews as far as I'm concerned. Paul Sheils has some pretty awesome hiking/wilderness videos, can definitely recommend his videos.
You can call the ranger station or just show up during daylight hours and go inside. They will give you a tent site or shelter whatever you prefer. It's like 10 bucks/night. Shouldn't have a problem getting a spot during the weekdays but weekends during summer it gets a little busy
I have watched all of the Outdoor Gear Review and some of Sintax77. Another channel you may want to check out us hctrails as he also has some great videos. I also like this girl called Reva McKinney though her videos are short and more about survival and she knows her stuff.
hi! I just found your video cause I'm thinking of camping out at Raccoon State Park. Please don't put lighters into geocaches! The changing temperature could cause lighter to fail and possibly explode and at the very least ruin everything inside the cache.

I've finished my outdoor adventure video viewing "marathon". I've enjoyed them all. Now I have to wait until I get the notification that you've posted a new video. I also subscribed to Sintax77 and Outdoor gear review. Check out John Amorosano. He's west coast and edits his videos so they're like a documentary.

Always fun to look back at your old videos just to see how far you’ve come. It’s odd seeing you hike in long pants and use a tent lol.
Right! And my 50lb pack lol

You are most welcome, have fun
I had a blast , the mineral springs was beautiful. How much are the hiking/backpacking sites ?
what permits do i need to spend a night here?

That's what I'd recommend, the mud isn't too deep, it's just annoying. It will be great weather this weekend. Have fun my friend!
Outdoor Adventures thanks! Checking out your Dolly Sods video. Another place I'd like to backpack.

Joe Robinet, My Self Reliance, Bearded Woodsman all good channels to check out.
I came across this video because I'm thinking about hiking raccoon state park. For some reason Google Maps doesn't have all of the trails listed that you used, can I get a map at the Ranger station? I would also like to add that towards the end I got some Blair Witch project vibes lol.
Yes the main parking lot has free maps right next to the lot. They are also at the heritage trail head on the lake side.
Another great channel for camping and hiking is JoeRobinet from Windsor Ontario. He also does gear reviews
Great video, I live about 35 minutes from racoon, and also love to hike. Just curious, what your base weight is??
Jeep the videos coming!
In this video it was probably about 28lbs. My current pack weight for 3 season weekend trips is about 15 lbs. lighterpack.com/r/3at0n1

kid ringo maybe at the campground by the lake. But if you drive over to the Sioux rustic campground you will have trees breaking up individual sites. But there are no showers and they have compost toilets.
There are Backcountry spots. At Sioux and pioneer. There is also a fairly large car campground which I tend to avoid.
Did you notice the ginormous ant hills near the part of the trail with the big pines? There's a cluster and they biggest are 3-4 feet high.
Yup I almost sat on one.
So cool. Also yikes.
That turkey had babies.
Planning some trips for this season, would you go there again?
Yes, I actually go there a lot for conditioning trips. Pretty nice hike.
@@FrozensAdventures where do you live normally? I’m in South Fayette, maybe a half hour to 45 minutes away from Raccoon Creek
I'm near the airport.

Google racoon Creek state park reservations. Should come right up.
You can call the ranger station or just show up during daylight hours and go inside. They will give you a tent site or shelter whatever you prefer. It's like 10 bucks/night. Shouldn't have a problem getting a spot during the weekdays but weekends during summer it gets a little busy

are they fees to camp or park overnight?
To camp yes. Look up the dcnr website for park. Free to park though.
it took so long to develop the current technology b/c they had to reverse engineer the roswell space craft first.
+Ibpn Might need another roswell soon, things are slowing down again!
