Decided that my “midlife crisis” is to go backpacking (with my husband) next year when I turn 40! I’ve always loved hiking and camping… just never tried backpacking. Starting with a local, state park trail that’s just 5 miles in, camp, 6 miles back. Baby steps!! 😅 thanks for the tips!
#1 piece of gear I see every beginner neglect - sleeping pad. If you made me choose between my pad, sleeping bag and tent, I’m taking the pad every time. Beginners don’t realize how much heat the ground can suck out of you, even in the summer.
My husband and I have watched several of your reviews and found this particular video helpful. We fall into the category of; done a lot of camping, a lot of hiking, and a lot of Mtb biking but never backpacked or bike packed. After much research, We have stated purchasing the gear. My biggest fear is weather / nature related. How to be prepared for the unexpected. How to determine when to shelter or when to keep moving.
I just turned 15(I know very young), but I’ve always loved the wilderness and I yearn for exploration. It’s quite weird since I’m very techy but I’ve saved up a bunch of money and want to start backpacking. Thanks for insight. Great video as well.
I’m a bit older 18, but started when 16, buy used gear and use marketplace, just made my first big purchase on a exo $700 bag, but that was after weeks of research

I'm going into Homelesness.. and all i got is a 50 pound backpack and tools on my belt. im currently in Massachusetts. but i want to go somewhere warm for winter.. some place like.. Texas.. or Florida.. or California. I dont care about trails because i was born in a very woodsy area. i have no tent either. just a sleeping bag. but my goal is to hopefully stumble my way into Acting and Stuntwork.
Hello! I went on my first backpacking trip this past spring and LOVED IT! It was a simple 1 nighter, roughly 15-mile round trip in South Florida. Now I really I want to do a trip in the mountains next spring! My problem is that I am not yet comfortable to go on my own and it is challenging to get my few backpacking friends to go for a long road trip due to their obligations. Do you know of any affordable guided backpacking trips? Or a backpacking group? I know REI offers some, but $1000+ in addition to travel costs is a bit out of the budget. Thank you!
I am heading out on my first one nighter this weekend. Biggest fear is getting over taste of filtered water. I tested my sawyer this past weekend on some river water (I live in SE Texas) and the taste wasn't terrible but made me gag lol. I bought some mio lemonade to mask the taste but I am still paranoid that it will make me feel sick.
The taste of the water shouldn't be that bad! It probably means the source water isn't great to start with. Mio or Chrystal light is great at masking bad tasting water.
If possible, use smaller water sources, ideally well-flowing, rather than stagnant. The smaller the water source, usually the closer to the original source, whereas a river will often have road runoff, agricultural runoff, and whatever else has made its way there. I used to take Koolaid on the trail back in the 90s because of flavor. Using a water bottle over a bladder for flavoring is usually a good idea, since bladder will pick up whatever flavor you've added.
Very informative. I’m looking forward to my first backpacking trip this spring or summer. Are there trails in Southern California you would suggest to a beginner?
My biggest obstacle at the very beginning of the handful (and I literally mean 'handful'..) of backpacking trail trips I've ever planned or done?... Finding even one single person to go with me... Seriously... I hate hiking alone but it seems fate (and everyone I invite) have other plans
That’s exactly where I’m at now. My family and I just recently moved to South Dakota where hiking options are far more that we had before… but I’m new to this and don’t know anyone in this scene yet. I have most of what I need, my only hold up is lack of present help.
It is definitely more fun, at times, going with others, but I've come to learn the fulfilling joy of going it alone. I can go at my own pace, stop where I want, and just really let my mind be free. I also am from South Dakota and am really looking forward to my first overnight trip. Up to now just day hikes. I'm envious of everyone that has places to do this our their backdoor. Unfortunately I have to travel quite a way to get into these areas. Still, I'm looking forward to hopefully having a couple of longer weekends this fall to do this before I attempt my first thru hike next year.
I have been camping, hiking, and backpacking since childhood, and I'm 63 now. Because wild camping is illegal in most of England, where I currently live, and I am a law-abiding person, I restrict my adventures these days to less ambitious outings like day hikes. I loved your advice about calling ahead and getting a heads up on local regulations. Good to see yo on Dan Becker's channel, too.
This is a very good point. Especially about car camping (or trying it out with lower risk). As for cotton, I agree with you. But this is directed at people who want to use cotton underwear/socks/hoodies/ etc who just wear clothing they have that feels warm and cozy around the house and don't know better.
I actually have my first solo backpacking trip planned out this summer. The only thing that makes me nervous is getting lost. I have no sense of direction.
Get a map of the area and study the crap out of it. Also keep an eye on a compass and the sun. If you are familiar with telling time by the sun that will help
I know what you mean. I’ve been on day hikes where the trail is not very clear. I’m trying solo backpacking this spring or summer. Let me know how it went for you.
When I travel to Thailand I usually rent I place for an entire month. If I want to go from city to city should I book All the accommodations before leaving home or book the first place and wing it from there?
Hey Eric I'm in that 30 percent...so I got a question for you what do you think of the mystery ranch terraplane 5000 ci capacity..?? or the osprey aether plus 85 with 5187 ci capacity or are you only a mystery ranch guy??
I went on a backpacking trip and a friend was 6 foot 6 inches (about 2 meters) tall and he didn't fit in the tent. They were using a cheap walmart tent and his feet from the knees down stuck out.
Tiny additions: 1. Don’t just tell someone where you’ll be hiking. Tell them the exact trail route you’re planning to do. 2. Consider a loop hike for the first hike. It means you can drive to the trailhead and leave from that trailhead. Logistics one less thing to worry about.
I'm worried that I'm going to pack too heavy and get too tired or exhausted. I'm in ok shape but how much should my pack weigh for a first time backpacker to be able to actually finish the trail?
A general rule of thumb is to not carry more than 20% of your body weight. But other factors are how many miles you hiking, at what elevation, and how much elevation gain and loss are you doing. Don't try to do too many miles at first. See how your body reacts and add more miles in later.
What about gear rental options? Eastern Mountain Sports has rentals and I think REI does too. It's also a good way to try out brands and models to see what you like.
Let someone know your route absolutely critical. Spend money on an inreach device. I would like to see a video on route planning. Water sources is my big concern.
Do not hang your food in Yosemite! It's against the rules, no idea why anyone would think this a good idea, bears are excellent climbers, do not bring the food to them

For those who think backpacking food is too expensive other great budget options are spam and ramen it is way cheaper and quicker
Great video Eric!!! Love your videos man
Thank you!
great video. looking forward to applying what I learned here!
Great video! Very informative for backpacking noobs like me. Liked and subbed! 👍🏼
Awesome, thanks!
How about a video of what to pack specifically for your first trip maybe 1 or two videos one for wet places one for dry?
This really was helpful. Really. Thanks for posting.
I would have mentioned first aid as well.
Thanks Jeremiah, and yes, first aid!
Part of the 30% 😅 I've been slowly accumulating gear but haven't gone out yet. Haven't even tested my setup out with a day hike.
Have you looked online for any hiking or backpacking groups in your area? Meetup and Facebook are great places to start!
Man just found your channel but i Love these videos
I have been camping, hiking, and backpacking since childhood, and I'm 63 now. Because wild camping is illegal in most of England, where I currently live, and I am a law-abiding person, I restrict my adventures these days to less ambitious outings like day hikes.
I loved your advice about calling ahead and getting a heads up on local regulations. Good to see yo on Dan Becker's channel, too.
Great tips!!! Thanks for posting!!!
Any time!
Thanks for your great videos!
Get a Garmin InReach Mini 2. Expensive but you’ll have complete peace of mind. And it might save your life.
I know what you mean. I’ve been on day hikes where the trail is not very clear. I’m trying solo backpacking this spring or summer. Let me know how it went for you.
my new trail guide look
When I travel to Thailand I usually rent I place for an entire month. If I want to go from city to city should I book All the accommodations before leaving home or book the first place and wing it from there?
what pack weight limit do you suggest for newer backpackers?
Watched all of it
What app do you use for navigating the trail/route?
How do you know where to go backpacking when you're a beginner? Honest question.
Just find something not too far! You’d be surprised how many great hikes there are all around.
Hey Eric I'm in that 30 percent...so I got a question for you what do you think of the mystery ranch terraplane 5000 ci capacity..?? or the osprey aether plus 85 with 5187 ci capacity or are you only a mystery ranch guy??
its all fun and games until a tweaker runs up on your tent while you were laying down
🗣️🔥
This is a video for nervous first time backpackers and the trail u use for an example is called "Little Death Canyon"...
haha, good point!
I went on a backpacking trip and a friend was 6 foot 6 inches (about 2 meters) tall and he didn't fit in the tent. They were using a cheap walmart tent and his feet from the knees down stuck out.
Was he sleeping sideways??
@@BackpackingTV No, I think it was a kids tent, the 5ft tall girls fit, but his legs from the knees down were outside
Planning a backpacking trip with a friend who’s not that experienced, we’re planning 40 miles in 3 days, bad idea? Yes. Story to tell? Probably
Your video is very acceptable 👍
Tiny additions:
@@BackpackingTV cool thanks for responding
I never camped or hike how do I start
Great
Thanks!
@@BackpackingTV I love your show Epic trails.I watch it everyday.
What about gear rental options? Eastern Mountain Sports has rentals and I think REI does too. It's also a good way to try out brands and models to see what you like.
Yeah that's a great idea. Great way to learn what you like and what doesn't work.
Lol I just dropped a comment on a newer video lookin for this one
I won’t do a long trip until I am confident
PLEASE ADVISE: I'M OLDER ABSOLUTELY SOLO, NO FRIENDS OR FAMILY. WHO DO I ALERT TO WHERE I'M GOING AND EXPECTED RETURN TINE??
The ranger station nearest the trail.
THANK YOU@@StamfordBridge
Anyone know what jacket he is wearing?
It's from Outdoor Research, but I don't remember which model.
Let someone know your route absolutely critical. Spend money on an inreach device. I would like to see a video on route planning. Water sources is my big concern.
Bear spray is illegal in Yosemite. Apparently there have been no attacks ever. Knock on wood
huh, well that's interesting.
@@BackpackingTV it's true! Also, you have to use a canister, and only certain models are allowed.
The stove makes me very nervous!
Also feral hogs. 😳
oooops alredy bought the gear lmao
I backpack by putting on a backpack and then putting one foot in front of the other.
Hmm. Novel concept. I'll give it a try.
👀
Where are you? I'm pretty scared of bears
Do I need my passport?
Do not hang your food in Yosemite! It's against the rules, no idea why anyone would think this a good idea, bears are excellent climbers, do not bring the food to them
First step-learn about LNT
Watch out for them bigfoots…….
head on a swivel!
The only question I'm left with is, are you related to Chris Hansen? I'll help catch the creeps.
no transcript sad

Eric, a big shout out, thank you for your vids. I admire the way you break things down making it easier to understand, what I do and or don't really need, and pointing out how to make things happen with what you already have versus just pedaling the name brand items, and to just get things started don't go overboard and burn out.
Shout out to you for introducing me to geartrade
