Backpacking Old Loggers Path - Pennsylvania

- Опубликовано: 31 дек 2024
- Old Loggers Path is a 27 mile loop located in the Loyalsock State Forest area of north-central PA. I'd rate this trail a 10 for Pennsylvania and encourage everyone to take a visit at what this place has to offer. Go off trail at the sound of waterfalls for some great swimming holes. Plenty of water and campsites this is really a hidden gem of Pennsylvania.
Parking: 41.507209, -76.820814
Trail starts close to the parking lot; I went clockwise but I suggest going counter-clockwise because I think the elevation would work out better though there isn't much.
Day 1: 11.2 miles - Camp near only major stream crossing
Day 2: 15.9 miles

I am a 69 year old grandmother who does not hike or camp but is totally addicted to your videos. I followed your Appalachian Trail trip. Thank you for your honest outlook and beautiful scenery.
Thanks for watching gram!
I love how clearly you explain everything! Really enjoy your videos!
Frozen is the real-ist hiker on RUclips. No pretentious bs. So refreshing.
Thanks Ben!
3 years old but yea you can od on water, especially when hot out and physical your body needs a lot of salt. too much water can cause swelling of the brain and headaches. love the videos, i cant wait to get out and try backpacking for the first time! i think i will be going next spring or summer, just gotta save up for gear! found your channel from the parker dam trip you did and thats where the AT got announced from you :D been slowly watching all the content and love it. hope to see you get out more!
Did this a few years back and camped by that Swimming hole. Actually poured a portion of my best friends ashes into the water there so it’s a special place.
Love watching your videos. I'm a Pennsylvania guy, doing the Old Loggers Path and the Loyalstock Trail this year as shakedown hikes to get ready for the JMT in July/August.
Loyalsock was really fun! Except for the first day where we started cold and went up that massive hill
I live in PA too and there’s a lot of great places in our state.
As a kid I remember vacationing in the remote wilderness of clarion county PA . Our state is full of deep sprawling forests I have yet to explore. I got to get back there sometime.
Coventry woods in PA is an old coal and logging trail
Sadly most people who live here, at least in my area, take it all for granted and complain about how boring PA is.
Yes they are stinging nettles. I've gotten bit by them on the OLP years ago. Should have jewelweed growing nearby which is a natural soothing balm for the stings

I'm new to your channel, and it made me happy to see someone hiking PA's trails. My Dad and I used to hike the Laurel Highlands hiking trail (In the Laurel Highlands of PA, of course.) This brings back some good memories.
One of my favorite trails!
That is a beautiful area and Rock Run is one beautiful creek 👍🇺🇸
Really loved that you pointed out the dead timber and set up in a safe area. No Widow Makers!
Frozen your smile makes me smile glad to see you back . Always looking forward to your adventures
If I could walk that, I would. Thanks for taking me along.
Great, great video, thank you! I'm thinking about a 100 miler this year, this is a great section. As for that sleeping pad, I'm a turner and tosser side sleeper. Nemo tensor is soooo comfy at 25" wise. Hike On!
So great to see you enjoying the beautiful outdoors again! It's been a bummer time for most of us and it was really nice to escape with you on this peaceful adventure. Thank you. Can't wait to see more!
Hi Jason your right it's been to long I have been missing your adventures. This trail looks really nice especially the great swimming spot. Thanks for the adventure and you take care.
I love your videos. And I love the fact that a lot of them showcase PA. There are so many trails that I want to go do simply from watching your vids.
So glad you're back out!!! Ive had that post depression before but it was from Afghanistan believe it or not. Living, sleeping, eating, fighting, rucking up mountains, with the same guys for 9 months will definitely make one miss it terribly.
I just love your channel so much! I watch it every night on the treadmill.
It's good to see you back out on the trail. Nice Tent! If you plan to come up to my area someday let me know at least 2 months in advance. All of the campsites are reserved now for at least 6 weeks. I do expect the same for next year.
Wow 6 week wait!
Frozen, nice video as always. Stinging nettle is bad in that area, yeah it has benefits but it is more of a pain when it covers acres of forest floor. VERY close to the Loyalsock trail...Hope to see that video in the near future, keep it up!
Just found your page did that trail 20 years ago, seeing that sharp top vista is still looks as good as I remember it. Also remember how cold Rock Run was! Thanks for the memory!
Great to see that smile back out in the wilderness! Yep, that’s nettle. I wrote a thesis on it, I could definitely bend your ear for a bit about it. Happy hiking! - Dandelion
I'm taking my daughter for her first overnight trip on OLP the end of this month. I haven't done it in years. Great video, good to see you get back out. 👍
A tent??? Aaaahhhh. Perhaps a clue to the continuation of Frozens thruhiking career.😁 They say it’s easier to hike the PCT with a tent because of the Mojave and High Sierra. You weren’t slurring your words. Cool vid man!!
Hey frozen thanks for the video glad to see you again a little strange with a tent so used to you on a hammock
Oh it's super strange for me too
Great video. Watching it now. Glad you got back on the trail. Thanks for what you do. You and a few other hikers on RUclips kept me going during the lockdown and winter months here in Vermont lol
It was fun to see you back in your natural environment and that swimming hole looked amazing. I'm definitely going to check this trail out.
Yessir, stinging nettle. Great video. Thanks for taking us along on your adventures!!!
I’m looking forward to hiking the old loggers trail , thanks for sharing Frozen 👍
It's good to see you Frozen . The swim looked very inviting..I'm looking for a wider sleeping pad myself so let us know what you find,,The woods always make everything better ...
just did the OLP with afterburner during the past polar vortex. awesome trail in the winter. everyone should enjoy an ice hike every so often.
Good to see you back! Enjoyed the video from my couch.
Good to see you out and healthy! Thanks for the video.
Nice trip glad to see you back out there. Can't wait to see how tent works out it never hurts having another tool at your disposal.
I'm a fan of the Loyalsock state forest beautiful part of the state. I did this twice last year once in each direction still not sure which I liked better.
The nemo tensor extra wide has been a game changer for me. I've been growndwelling for about 30 yrs and bought that pad this year and it has changed tenting for me. I also toss and turn a lot and with this pad i sleep through the night.
Seems like everyone pointing me to this pad. I'll check it out ty. Had my eye on it already.
Good to see you back out on the trail man! Awesome views at that first camp!! Been a really hot summer for sure! Also cool to see you ground dwelling. Its awesome! I've been a tent guy my whole life. I'm also a stomach sleeper so i could never swing the hammock, no pun intended lol..Enjoy yourself, we only live once. Camping and hiking is like riding a bike you never forget! Stay safe man! Hike on!!
I am new to your channel but watched the AT video last night and woke up this AM in a good mood. I live in PA so I am going to try this trail. Thanks for the great videos.
Frozen: I literally watched your videos to prepare a out and back on this exact trail for the first time. Funny to see you on it now. There was a slight rain and I thought I heard Thunder which was actually a bear as I walked full speed into it crouching on the side of the trail. Thing bolted out and ran away but wow what a rush. Thanks for the content!
Glad to see you back on trail. Planning is over rated, go have fun.
Nemo Tensor Sleeping Pad, 72 x 25 x 3 works for me, plus its quiet.
I can't wait until my new LiteAF Multi Day pack arrives. Looks like it's going to be a good one.
Keep the videos coming!
This makes me want to rewatch all your AT videos again.... Thanks for the video...
That looks like it would be a nice trail to run, too. Especially with that swimming hole!
Enjoyed your video. Great to see you back on the trail!
Born and raised in PA. Just found your channel...great stuff!
Caught this video a little late but enjoyed seeing you back on the trail.
Nice to see u again Frozen...very nice videos!!!
It is great to see you back Frozen, looks like a hike was long overdue for you!
Love that trail. Did it last year and we had some great weather. The swimming hole was awesome and so refreshing. The views were definitely great and the trail in general was very well maintained. We didn’t see any rattlesnakes on our trip but we were looking for them. Like you mentioned though it was such a peaceful hike and so beautiful. We were lucky enough to do it during the weekdays so traffic was slim to none. Would definitely do the trip again but maybe go counter clockwise next time to change it up a bit.
Almost certain its stinging nettle. Beautiful hike! I'm so glad you were able to get out!
Thanks for the tip on the Sawyer micro. I've been using the regular one without issue for over two years. Oddly enough, I have never had issues with the provided bags that come with it. Everyone else I know has had issues,,,not sure what I am doing different. Hey,,, nothing Gorrilla tape can't fix! Good to see you back out !!!
Wow! Your pack is so light! I hike here in the heat with 20-24 pounds. I want some proper gear too haha
Took me a long time to get down that low. My gear changes all the time, summer is a light time for me as well.
I believe that is the Stinging Nettle. Encountered the nasty devil a few months ago on a very un-maintained trail - kind of looked like what you shot off your trail. It's like a chemical burn or something - burns like hellfire!;) Fortunately it only seems to last about 15-20 min.
Great to see you back out on trail, and thanks always for sharing another vid!
Excellent video Jason. Glad you finally got out on a trip in this crazy year. I also just purchased a tent to supplement my standard hammock setup. I must say I also noticed the significant temperature difference in the tent versus the hammock. Hopefully this will be a plus on cold trips haha. I'm pretty jealous of your swim in Rock Run. That is probably the most beautiful stream section I've seen on the trail but it has been quite cold the two times I've done the OLP so swimming wasn't an option. Hopefully you don't have to wait nine months for your next trip!
I'm hoping for a little extra warmth in the tent in the winter
Oh Frozen, missed you, glad to get this popped up in my to watch subs!
Good to see you back on the trail. God Bless
Ready player one is one of my all-time favorite books lol just wanted to through that out there thanks for all the great videos and hope to see you on the trails here in ohio at some point
Shame the movie didn't stick to the book.
Glad to see you back on the trail!
Awesome video....nice trail... and yes to "Stinging Nettle".
Yes, that definitely looks to be Stinging nettle, OLP has several large patches of it
Nice to see you back
Awesome video is always
Nothing like just walking the trail with no plans just to see what's around
And nothing wrong being in a tent
That way you have fun with both tent and a hammock
Great to see you out and about!
I love your videos. And the OLP is one of my all time favorite trails.
Great to see you on trail again ! Jeff
Nice Video! Thank you for sharing. Can't wait to see more 😍
You make me wanna go back to do that trail
I'm a tent guy I always been curious how good of a sleep I can get in a hammock might try it eventually
"Google, stop listening!" LOL
Glad to see you got out on trail for a little bit of adventure!
Google has been weird recently
'Am I talkin nonsense right now?' Definitely subscribing
Great to see you back out! Hoping to get back out soon as the temps start dropping a bit.
It was definitely hot out there!
We are so lucky to live in PA! Great job frozen
Great to see trip from you again! Looked like a great time.
I did OLP a few months ago and liked it. Started from Masten around 8a and completed the trail by 5p or so the following day. Really enjoyed it overall.
Nice! I was just at the Loyalsock Trail. I Park after doing 31 miles on the Day 2, my knee was screaming at me. The views are amazing even with the thunderstorms.
I’m going on my first solo camp adventure in a couple weeks and it looks like Old Logger’s Path will be my second solo camp adventure 😃😃
OLP was my first and it's lovely. Definitely recommend you do it!
Loved the video; I got the Grayl Geopress water purifier...LOVE it
Nice to see you back. It's been awhile.
Great video! Always enjoy the ones where you do a trail I've already been on, just to see what has changed. My trip on the OLP was in steady rain for the full day part, a bear couldn't even hear me come up on it :). Thanks again for the videos.
Hey Jason thanks for the info on the filter I find the micro a pain to... i use a woman's Neo air which has been sent back it developed a bubble. But till they send me a new one, I bought the Big Agnes Q Core SLX petite size. 66"long .... 16 ozs but the comfort is worth the extra 4 ozs...... I toss and turn to mate used it a week now and found i cannot roll of the biggest plus of all ......I'm 5'3" and about 9.1/2 stone. Nice to see you getting out again..........regards Gramp's grey balls
Good to see you on the trail again.
4 pads tried and nemo tensor for the win!!!!!!!!! Dilutional hyponatremia can be serious and can be caused by drinking too much! Carry couple nuun tabs just in case- Great to see you!
Probably one of my favorite Pennsylvania trails.
I need friends that love doing this as much as I do... The depression you speak of I thought I was crazy and the only one who experienced such a thing
Nemo Tensor wide - I'm sure you'll get plenty of recc's for it, here's another!
Agreed.
David Brasfield yeah I second the Nemo tensor wide. I currently rock the uberlite wide but tensor is built for comfort in mind
Agreed!
I tried a Tensor from REI and the thing started leaking half way into my first trip with it. Bad luck or common? I've been too scared to try it again. Before it started leaking I thought it was amazing though.
Kevan Ray maybe just a one
Off. Those things are way more bombproof than my Uberlite.
First Hockey’s back, then a B.A. video...!! Pass the Glen Levit please......
Amen. Hockey on TV. I've been looking for a PA trail for two weeks from now. This is perfect distance and it's a loop.
I'm a hammock camper myself. Used to be on ground.. 3\4 pads.. Made me convert to hanging.
Anyway.. I recently grabbed some new tents for certain situations.. I tried neo air xlite long\wide.. And uberlight long/wide. Honestly great nights sleep for being on the ground.
This trail was my first ever weekend trip, I highly recommend anyone that can get it to to do it at some point. I would love to do it again next year now that my base weight is half of what it was back then and I switched to a hammock system!
I also did it clockwise, and I feel like if you are gonna do it over three days that's the best. There are awesome campsites at mile 10 and 21, and then an easy 6 to finish the trip. CCW might be best for a two day to even out the elevation.
Ground Dweller !!! hahahaha// Nice Shelter!! stinging nettle hurts but it is not all that bad and yeah that looks like it /// i wouldnt drink it either/// glad i get to see this and your stealth vid in a row as i got to hear the end result with the micro.. love the groundhogs i use the regulars on our 2 person tent, minis on the 1 man... / nice catch of the snake! some nice views and great trail scenes and Excellent pool for swimming! thanks for taking us with you
50k subs. Congratulations 👏
Thank you 🙌
WHO ELSE FAST FORWARDED TO THE CAMP SHOTS TO SEE FROZEN IN A TENT ?😂😂...great video so far dude..looks like a cool area...your far from a newbie...
Also regarding pads, im a side sleeper and have yet to find the right pad. I need a 25" wide pad. my current klymit static v lite is 23". I think im going to try the NEMO Tensor (1.3lb) but 3 inches thick and 25" wide. Take a look at that pad.
Enjoyed the Video! Glad to see you back on trail.✌️
I believe that was Yellow Dog Run that you dipped in. Cool name for a stream.
Hey Frozen!! It’s great to see you on trail again!
I live in Buffalo. Since you seem to like anything Buffaloed, you should come here and do the Chicken Wing Trail. It's a tour to about the top 20 chicken wing places in Buffalo and suburbs. Anchor Bar and Duff's aren't always the favorites either.
I purchased a grayl water filter and I've only used it this season (so only about 3 months) but I love it!
my first solo trip backpacking was on the AT doing the triple crown section. I listened to ready player one on that trip. movie was great too but listening to that book was something else. being a gamer myself i was geeked out on it.
I believe Sea To Summit has a thicker more comfortable pad that is short. Might be better for you. I see that pack is out on some other channels, what do you think? This trail seems like a possible idea for me sometime thanks. 😊❤️🇺🇸⛺️🌄
OLP is my fav loop in PA. Though as I've aged it's a 3 day not a quick overnighter anymore 😂😂 Glad your footage popped up in my suggested viewing.
Yes, Stinging Nettle it is.
It's a SUPERFOOD
Glad to hear that intro music again
