- Oh man, we made it! 100 episodes of the Vault Sessions! I can’t heap enough praise on our team, the players, the guys at the Songbirds Guitar Museum, and our fans. Thanks so much for growing with us and helping us hone our videos through kind comments and feedback (we grew from the mean ones too, ha!) Anyway, we hope you enjoy this highlight video from some of our favorite players!
This episode is centered around an amazing guitar-the 1958 Gibson Korina Flying V with a bizarre lefty guard. This guitar is one of approximately 89 Korina V’s to exist. The Korina wood allowed the guitar to remain incredibly light, but still retain all the acoustic properties of mahogany. In this episode, this guitar is played by some of the best in the business: @JDSimoMusic, Marcus King, “Kingfish” Ingram, @jackpearsonguitar, and @oznoy !
Season 3 is packed with great players so click the subscribe button for updates.
Coming soon: Jimmy Herring, Ben McLeod, Samantha Fish, Stuart Mathis, Andy Wood (part 2), and dozens more. These sessions help keep the music alive by helping the Songbirds Foundation raise money to buy guitars for kids…check out our website to find out more- songbirdsfoundation.org. Thanks to our sponsors- The Riverview Foundation, Schillhahn-Huskey Foundation, GHS Strings, and Todd Sharp Amplifiers. Special thanks to John Dooley for the great video work.

Jackie Pearson is the man!
He is definitely my favorite here, the way he uses dynamics and messes with the guitars controls is just fantastic. JD was the least interesting for me personally
I mean Jack played with the Allman Brothers, you have to be good to do that! He is the man! So humble too.
Would love to hear Kirk Fletcher play the V. JD came very close to Kirk’s mellow laid back style. But Mr. Pearson was the most versatile IMHO.
Yes him and Oz Noy are just plain smooth.
Yeah, smooth and smokin' at the same time. I really liked what Mr. Simo fetched out of it too!
JD sure makes that V sound great.
Jack Pearson is simply one of the greatest. Period.
I can’t believe you guys didn’t have me come down and play, you know I like V’s
I can't either! Apparently they don't realize who you are! 😆
I love that Kingfish is getting recognition more and more. He’s a top notch player and ,from everything I’ve seen of him, a super humble guy.
They all sound great on the Flying V but Jack has a nuance that no other player has, his sense of touch is sublime.
marcus king pulling from the grand wazoo. love it.
These videos have become Gold!
Every single one of them sounded amazing. Excellent players all of them, and that rig! Awesome.
It’s so amazing same guitar same amp all different tones/styles but all so brilliant. That guitar has it that whatever it is. All of them seem to feel “it” when they play. Very cool.
That is a amazing instrument.
It's sounds so good in everyone's hands.🎶
anyone saying wood doesn't affect tone hasn't heard this V. incredible and unique.
amazing how this guitar has that nasal tone, almost like a p90, very albert king sounding, spetacular players as well!
it's like albert kangs soul has been attached itself to every flying V, much like SRV and Hendrix lives in many strats walking around today
its a perfect example that the same guitar, same amp, same venue sounds very very different from different hands. great video btw
The secret Jack's style is his ability to remain calm. He doesn’t get ahead of himself and doesn’t hit the strings too hard.
Jack F-ing Pearson.... Most underrated guitarist on earth.
yessssssssssss
💜
Never seen a V with two PGs. I've seen on an old 335 with two, but not on a '58 V. Very cool and that infamous nasal sound a la Albert King. SRV would've loved this sound for sure.
PG's?
Did you mean pickguards? Type the word.
Joe Bonamassa plays a Flying V with two pickguards.
There's an Ampeg BT-15 Bass Amp in the background. Had one of those when I was 17 (50 years ago). Best amp I ever owned - period. I believe it was Ampeg's first solid-state amp. The head flipped over into the cabinet for transport. I miss that amp so much.
Definitely all extremely worthy players for this one. I'd have a hard time picking a fave. Close call between JD, Jack and Kingfish.
I’m giving this one to Jack. Man does he make that thing cry!
@@jakemguitarist yes... But those bends of JD. The soul of Kingfish. Good we don't need to pick.
Oz noy 😮
you got to own a V. kingfish and Simo had the right idea, whip out your best Albert King when you have a V in your hands.
I've got a theory of sorts as to why the Flying V sounds so different to other Gibson guitars. Firstly the Korina wood it's made from. It's not mahogany and that's one major difference. Then there's the amount of korina wood around each pickup. There is practically no wood around the neck pickup, unlike most other Gibson guitars where they have plenty of wood around it, even the SG. But look how close it is to the neck where it's picking up on the neck vibrations. Then we look at the bridge pickup and it's got so much wood around it compared to any other guitar's bridge pickup that it just has to sound significantly different. Whatever the reasons, it sure is a unique guitar, that's for sure.
Kingfish makes it look so easy… he plays some nice extra notes that expand his blues approach
Jack Pearson is incredible. Kingfish makes the V look like a ukulele.
Give somebody a V and all of a sudden they think their Albert King! Me too.
I did not realize that I had seen so many musicians with the same instrument
ah yes you did it ! thanks
this is The Sonbird Foundation guitar
Kingfish and Jack need to jam
Wish they had JB playing on that V, too...he seems to have a special bond with them...my favorites on this were Pearson and Kingfish, but all were excellent of course.
He plays this same V for several songs on Live at the Greek Theatre
JDs been eatin everything
Jack Pearson is the closest ive ever heard someone get to albert king with that V
JD Simo was pretty on the mark as well
No one can get anywhere near Albert Kings great V sound.
Jack Pearson was smart to tune it down, man that thing sounds great growling low like a baritone there! Most or some anyway wouldn’t even notice...
Marcus King, eat that question man!
Is it normal that there is side dots on the bottom of the neck?
Ahh hahaha ; -D
Ooooh ,: -D
A lot of bbking liks
J.D. CROSSCUT SAW
Anyone ever seen a 58 Flying V with the extra pickguard on the left like this one has?
it also has the extra side dot markers on the fretboard. someone used it left handed at one point in time.
Added
wtf it has got dots on the bottom side of the neck. lol
i WILL TAKE ONE ...HOW MUCH ? :)
You got three kidneys?
So i heard that Marcus King has a twin called Marcus ray Vaughn....
Do all of the originals have that middle position that sounds a bit out of phase? This one sure does and I assume that Albert's had it too.
No
Sure sounds like the pickups are out of phase. Albert King gets that sound from his too so maybe out of phase was standard with these. I was too young to know what that means when I got to play a 1958 V
Interesting that apart from Jack Pearson everyone played through the Dumble..Sorry Todd ..No contest ! The JOAT is a great amp , but not in that league..
They should have given that V to Kingfish! Sweet
Sell me this guitar
Can't believe Gibson charges 20 grand for something that sounds nothing like that. Why can't they simply make a pickup that sounds transparent it's not that hard. ReWind did it. Peter Florance di it.
I got Epiphone with a Broken neck sent it back bought a Gibson v binded body 2017 It sucked my dean played better I seen korina v Epiphone I played I wasn't gonna buy It i got enough guitars but I did an just as good as any Gibson I had haven't had good luck with Gibsons way over priced for a name on the head stock
Jeez why are they all playing the same naff riffs.
blues baby 😂
Pentatonic back and forth, how boring.
