Hey, I'm just happy you made the effort to talk about Lorn at all. I personally LOVE Lorn, and there's not much else out there like Lorn when you look at his entire music history. He's very flexible.
i have to defend the beach boys because they were completely forced into making that album. not to mention i really enjoyed the last four songs, though i do agree the autotune was a big problem for me, and the lyrics were also not up to par, but it wasnt the worst thing in the world
Shoegaze is a genre based heavily on noise and large sweeping use of many effects pedals in conjunction with rock and indie elements. It's called this because guitarists would be constantly staring and adjusting their effects pedals, or to the audience, staring at their shoes, and therefore, shoegaze.
How is DIIV any different than Dirty Projectors or the Beatles?--melodies and songs. The reverb is just the production, a non-issue (or at minimum a stylistic preference, like wearing kneesocks) when it comes down to it.
Lorn is one of those anomalies in music whose production is so intensely deliberate there's always something new to grasp on a re-listen. His music comes from a dark place, I respect that you can't get into that, but don't you feel it pulling you into his world?
It's lame how you can't see what was so great about Flockavelli. That will be the best record he will EVER produce and you can't give him credit for how good it was.
y u no review 'The Thing & Neneh Cherry - The Cherry Thing' ? seriously. y u no mention of it? y u no comment about it from my comments? stunning new jazz album
Quickly flicked through this video and didn't see anything about Playin Me by Cooly G. Was wondering if you'd listened to it, or maybe reviewd it and i've missed it? Might be up your street i reckon. (Why you no feature Cooly G on Y U NO REVIEW?) :)
I'm only 7 minutes into this video, but I like these "bite sized" under developed reviews. Reminds me of the mini review section for albums in music magazines where they just have a paragraph and a rating. I would enjoy more videos in this format in the future. Way to get 2 birds stoned at once.
Now let me ask nicely, what is your opinion on his albums? like production wise and lyrics. I'm here to talk like Gentlemen what is it you don't like about the Odd Future albums?
The problem with things being overproduced aren't that they're overproduced but that they aren't well written enough to be striking without some kind of raw or different production. A cleanly produced album can have just as much character as a Xasthur-esque album or an album produced similarly to Agalloch's "Marrow Of The Spirit", just provided that the song is written well enough. I disagree with Anthony when he says Porcupine Tree is too produced, but agree with most modern metal and rock.
I really like the new LP album. But then again, that's probably my bias of being a fan since their beginning days. I actually prefer the new album over any of the old ones, I think there are a lot of great songs on it, and a few not so great. The one let down for me is the length of all the songs. I hate having a song that's less than 3 mins in length.
Anthony, do you purchase all these albums, are they sent to you, do you leet hax them for free, or what? I'm just jealous of how many albums you have available to you.
I completely agree with you on the DIIV album. I mean it's fun to listen to that reverby shoegaze stuff every once in a while(unknown mortal orchestra) but this album really didn't have much coulour to it at all. That's just me..
Damnnnn you are so on point with your reviews its not funny. No bullshit, no giving artists props based on the hype surrounding them. Thats pretty much why i have come to dislike websites like pitchfork, they review things based on how much hype that is surrounding an artist, rather than how good they ACTUALLY are.
Hey Anthony, as always, respect for your opinions, I just have one question. What is so bad about well produced metal? You say that it sounds mechanical so much so that it is like a machine- one could argue that's part of the intent. Regardless, I'm opposite from you, I can't stand unclearly produced metal- you know, the stuff full of imperfections, feedback and over all random gnarliness. For me, it's because it detracts from the musical prowess. Why listen to an unpolished performance?
Zorak Check out some tracks from Noisia's debut Split the Atom, Neosignal are a bit like Lorn but more aggressive I guess, also Two Fingers/Amon Tobin is great. Culprate's album Deliverance has sort of the same idea behind it as Lorn too
Dolor is the only one that remotely sounds like Lorn that I have come across (no one touches Lorn's deep notes though, bet Melon doesn't have a subwoofer).
im quite surprised at your thoughts on Cattle Decapitation's Monolith of Inhumanity, thought you were gonna like it a lot less just from the production anyways, im glad i did picked up the album, one of my top albums of the year thus far, kinda wished you had Eremita by Ihsahn in this list, but oh well
Idk why but it's weird as fuck that there's a video of his this old up here, BUT HE DELETED THE VIDEO OF HIMSELF COVERING THAT BEACH HOUSE TRACK ON THATISTHEPLAN. That video was gold you guys.
I'm kind of disappointed by the Beach Boys review, not because you were wrong in what you said (in fact I pretty much agree with you), but because I think it at the least deserved a little more elaboration, if only because its the first Beach Boys album in over 20 years, and because their old stuff continues to be extremely influential to the whole world of music.
I have to completely disagree with the Regina Spektor part... to me, her shedding the crazier parts of her music improved it immeasurably. Just compare the old version of Ne Me Quitte Pas to the new one, and tell me which is more interesting and fun.
Shoegaze is sort of an ambient alternative genre. It got it's name from the artists who played shoegaze music constantly staring at their shoes during gigs.
I'll tell you that I think you're wrong about the Beach Boys album. I thought it was quite sincere (lyrically) given their age. Sure they mentioned ideas of getting older and calling it quits on the album, but that's what's on their (or his) mind/s right now. I thought songs like "Spring Vacation" and "Private Life of Bill and Sue" had a sense of wisdom and honesty about their age. I would not say the album is great (or as good as their other albums), but it wasn't excruciating to listen to it.
All I needed to hear was that you thought Linkin Park was skilled, but you just don't like their sound. Thank you.
