Jason is a natural when instructing. His advice and wisdom is key to becoming a good pilot. Staying ahead of the flight and the airplane is something I do on every flight which makes flying a lot more fun as you will know what to expect.
steveo1kinevo you as well. I’ve seen your videos. You’re a single pilot staying ahead of your TBM 850. I think that’s phenomenal multitasking that airline pilots would have a hard time.
STEVE, YOU COULD HAVE WENT TO AN HOUR, i WAS TOTALLY HOOKED ON THIS VIDEO. Wow, i'm learning a lot watching you struggle through IFR training, but I know it's just the process every student has to go through. I look forward to the day I go through it.
My commercial pilot instructor actually had me try a different instructor this week that is also in our club...everyone has different styles....I guide newer IFR trainees as safety pilot a lot like you do let's think ahead and once in while when off course and I already said turn 20 degrees I have to say right right right as in now...on path to CFII next year
I really appreciate this feedback Gary - it is rewarding to know you're enjoying the full episodes - I open live with a cut for several days while I trim and tighten, refining the story. that that doesn't include the day or two it takes to organize and sync the raw footage.
Alright, that's enough of me freeloading. I have to join your patreon, these videos are too good. And the less edited ones you talked about? I need that in my life.
Haha - awesome thnx! And as for "the ad" you're talking about my initial quick plug of the website, yes? Because there should not be any ads running ahead of this video... I do not monetize in the traditional way... But RUclips sometimes turns them on if the "copyright robots" scan the wave form and think one of the music tracks isn't licensed (which they are, as I always buy them - but sometimes I have to file a claim to prove it and get the ads turned off - very annoying.) And honestly - the web plug is as much about making sure people know about the monthly contest, as it is about making sure people have an easier way to find the existing content in an organized way. We're getting close to 100 episodes now, and I am proud of each and every one! But they can get buried on RUclips.
FlightChops Yea I totally agree either way the RUclips system is very messed up at the moment when it comes to things like this but again man Thanks for making videos man. One thing I learned from you is that a good pilot always try's to learn more!
This instructor is great! He provides constructive criticism without being completely condescending and arrogant. Great video! This was a joy to watch!
Working my way through the midpoint of IFR training. Still getting overwhelmed as “the extra balls are tossed into the mix”. Watching a video like this 1. Makes me realize that I’m not alone in the feeling of being completely and utterly maxed out mentally 2. Makes me realize that I just gotta keep pushing forward. 3. Gives outstanding overall concept of how important it is for me to get ahead of the airplane. And 4 . Watching a guy like Jason and the absolute total grasp he has of everything that’s going on, in addition to being able to teach and be relaxed at the same time tells me that yeah, it is doable and it’s a target of professionalism to aim to achieve someday (its gonna take a while). Steve Thorne, thanks to you and your team for putting this stuff online. Amazing work and you truly have no idea how valuable it is not only technically but also and maybe more importantly emotionally. Knowing that “ok , someone else has been here and I’m not hopeless”. And to Jason Miller, I’ve already commented on some of your other videos and on your Patreon that once I have the basics down I’m coming to find and fly with you. I hope that relates how I feel about what kind of instructor you are. Thanks to both of you and your teams. I just moved from holding patterns to approaches, some days are good, some not so much and rewatching this video is exactly what I needed to see to keep me going. Thanks guys!
that video was awesome. used to fly vfr 40 years ago, and love to see flying videos. seeing real time ifr was fantastic. also used to follow Jason's finer points podcast years ago, and have missed his great productions. you made my day!
Awesome video. Been there. I was a mess and all over the place in the beginning of my ifr. One of the most challenging things I have accomplished as an adult was earning that rating. Thanks so much for sharing.
As someone who is out of practice with real world IFR, I enjoyed every minute of this video. I also loved the way your instructor explained things and would love to spend a few hours with him if ever I am in that area. Thanks again for the great videos.
I’m starting the process of getting back to current on my instrument rating after not having flown IFR in over a year. This video is really helpful in calming my nerves. It’s great to see that it’s perfectly normal to have a hard time staying ahead of the airplane when first getting back into it. Great video! Thank you!
The mental saturation is something difficult to show in a video, so well done doing so. Your instructor is so right about the effect of that (the juggling 4 balls then a 5th ball comes along, all balls dropped scenario) and how important it is to get ahead of the aircraft at any point you can. Nice video.
Great video! I totally get the task saturation from learning how to fly Instruments all while using checklist, keeping your heading, altitudes, communicating with ATC, briefing the plate, and finally flying the approach. It definitely is a lot, I am in about 45 hours of IFR training and it's finally starting to come together. Again great video!
I live in SF and am about to start flying, I've alway wanted to fly into KHAF but there's almost always that fog. Sounds like I need two things, IFR training and Jason as my instructor! He's great.
Although you were really quite rusty in IMC conditions, there was a lot of talent on exhibit from everyone in the cockpit. I'm sure you realize how valuable videos like this are. Very, very nicely done.
Steve, Even as a VFR student pilot, I love your videos. They remind me that even the best pilots get rusty and have problems shaking it off, so to not get discouraged. I always learn something when I watch your videos. Thanks!
Steve, this video was one of the best I've seen. Priceless content for IFR flying. I could literally watch 5 hours of this stuff straight. I hope to see more IFR content in the future! Good luck with your Instrument Training!
Right on - feedback appreciated - we have a lot more of this coming! I'm gonna the dang rating done and share the process - it might take forever, but it will get done - and my doing it so inefficiently just means more episodes to share, right? :)
What a wonderful display of humanity by the student and compassion and patience by the instructor. I'll keep the technique of monitoring mental loading and building up strength in mind for my day to day. Thank you for the insight.
It's funny, because I hear my own voice through Jason when he's guiding you through the approach. He doesn't need a pretty fresh CFII telling him that his method and demeanor are spot on, but they really are. I just took a brand new instrument student through his first 5 hours of actual with 2 missed approaches due to not breaking out and staying calm and collected will always keep the student calm and collected. Fantastic video.
Best video for us learning approaches. Flying the approach as a student is so stressful and I get task saturated. I like how Jason is so relaxed. Watching you doing the approach reminds me of me doing my approach and is refreshing
my stress level while watching that 2nd approach went up a good bit,the value of the production that your team puts together is irreplaceable steve, for God sakes keep these videos coming..
Although this material isn't for oficial pilot trainig pourposes, is amazing how we can learn watching the instructor, and catching his great tips for IFR flight, and also watching your progression through this special type of flying. Thanks for share!
Love the video. In addition to sharing great insights for folks training for (or considering) instrument rating, the instructor has some valuable lessons for corporate execs, teams, entrepreneurs: most of his advice applies to the business world. It’s all about planning, thinking ahead so that when the s... hits the fan, you are prepared to deal with pressure. People feel overwhelmed, stressed, scared, angry, and a whole lot of other emotions because things are happening faster than they have time to process and react. If you knew you had infinite time to deal with a situation, you wouldn’t be stressed. That’s why the key to success and survival is preparation. Thousands of years ago that meant mostly physical preparation. Nowadays, at least for most people, it means preparing your mind. For some professions, it is both (soldiers, athletes, etc.).
Great video. I've never seen a live IFR training session. Man that seems tough. Also the instructor clearly knows what he's doing and how to describe it.
Wow. Just getting back into VFR, but I gotta say, Jason seems like the type of instructor I want to learn from. Love his demeanor and way of teaching. That being said, I soooo want to get IFR certified. I think mainly for the increased awareness and tightening up basic flight skills. It really challenges your abilities, in a good way, as long as you don't get behind the aircraft ;)
Just realized Jason is "The Finer Points" podcast. Didn't recognize him without that hat on his podcast cover HA!! Not to mention I swear I pick up more of his accent on the podcast as opposed to videos
Doh! I guess that idea of mine all stems from your podcast intro..."Helloooo Aviators". Has a very Doug and Bob McKenzie (StrangeBrew) ring to it.. lol!! I find myself saying it with you on the podcast and my kids just laugh at me as I emphasis an accent
Yeah. It's weird how your mind can associate two seemingly unrelated things. Then again, If I hear you say "Take off ya hoser!" or ""Coo loo coo coo, coo coo coo coo".... I'll have justified myself. LOL!! Serious note though....great podcast. I have all the episodes loaded up in my playlist. Since they are evergreen content, it doesn't matter if they are 2 days old or 4 years old, they are still just as informative. I'm 10 years out of piloting and 3 flight hours into a through refresh. Your podcast, along with other studying has put me way ahead of the curb. My CFI has been thoroughly impressed with my knowledge, communications and stick/rudder skills and says I definitely don't show the "rust" he would be expecting. You're podcasts have definitely helped in both areas! Keep up the great work.
I'll never put the effort in to get my Instrument rating but thoroughly enjoy watching video's like this one. Jason reminds me a lot of Fred, my original CFI at Air San Luis at SBP, calm but brutally honest. Love watching your flying also Steve, thanks for sharing your experiences!
Man! I loved this video! Your rawness and openness about your mistakes teach us so much! I am on the same boat being out of IFR currency for so long. I felt I was you in the cockpit with things getting over my head. Loved the instructor and the overlays. Just awesome. I had to subscribe. I hope there is more like this. Thanks so much.
Awesome! Thank you - and welcome to the channel! There is a lot more like this one - and you can follow the process of me FINALLY finishing the rating in the "IFR status vlog" - check for the play list on the main channel page.
I have gone through about 3/4 or more of my instrument training, and had to put it on hold for surgery. So far it has been the hardest thing I have tried to accomplish. I have just started to get the hang of it, but never in the groove. I still feel so clumsy trying to fly IFR, I can so relate to this video!! It would be so rewarding to get that rating!!!
I really needed - and need - this one. What Jason had to say about attention saturation is so valuable to me... and heartening. I'm surprised how much easer it is to get saturated now that I'm older, and it's encouraging to hear that it's something that can be improved with practice. I'm going to watch this one a bunch of times!
Happy to help buddy - because yeah - it is definitely a muscle... and mine was clearly out of shape on this one :P But it definitely got better just over the few days of immersive training with Jason - so I know there is hope for us old guys :)
Great video as always. Here in the UK we have an 'IMC' rating which is now (under EASA) called a restricted IR and was designed as a get out of trouble qualification rather than a ticket to fly airways and minima. Mine has lapsed and needs renewing, so it's great to watch another rusty pilot struggling to stay ahead of the aeroplane.
Schteevie, I gotta say I have a lot of respect for you as a pilot. You're always learning and pushing your skills. That was something I used to emphasize as I taught. Jason's a great instructor. I wish I flew with more CFIs like that in my training. Looking out for your flair change one of these days ;)
This was great! Seriously when the video ended I was surprised because it felt like only 5 minutes had passed. It can be hard to take 2 hours worth of flying and condense it while still maintaining the quality, feel, and pertinent information, but you did a great job on this video. Thanks so much!
Thanks Chops! This was awesome to watch! I am not a pilot but I play one in DCS. I try to fly an F5 from Nellis to Creech at night and crash into the ground most of the time. I obviously have no idea what I'm doing. Watching the details and tools you guys use to fly IFR is serious business, and inspiring to see it done well. Love your channel bro. Blue skies.
OMG, I love you videos. I'm learning a lot just watching your experience. I hope you never stop because as a private pilot I can relate to your experiences. This is truly the beauty of RUclips because it's free learning. THANK YOU for your videos. I'm a subscriber
Another great video and appears to be excellent instruction from Jason. Can tell he's really into instructing and not just trying to build time to get to an airline gig. Keep it going Steve, the light bulb will go off soon and things will start falling into place!
Steve, I've been subscribed since the start of my training a year ago. As a pilot completing the multi/IFR/commercial, I appreciated your older videos that always seemed to have some sort of valuable lesson attached to the well shot/edited videos. That said, I do enjoy your newer work, it's awesome to see the opportunities you've had in the av world. These videos interest me much more, it helps show the real effort and discipline that needs to be behind every successful flight. If you decided to get into more informational flying videos again I wouldn't be disappointed!
I really appreciate you filming this, as a student currently learning instrument, i'm getting a lot of good information about how to stay ahead of the aircraft.
I'm about to start IFR training and have been looking for a good IFR video as a pre-training motivation. This is by far the best I've found. Seriously, great job on the video and the flying!
Outstanding! Looking forward to the uncut stuff on Patreon and to all the videos that you will put together from your IFR work with Jason. I've have enjoyed all your recent videos, but also happy you are getting back to your roots a bit. Keep up the great work.
Bonus points for doing it without an HSI! Don't worry, the juggling gets much easier, and by time your check ride comes, you should feel like you have plenty of time before the approach.
wish Jason was in florida, he is very easy to understand and listen to. great job again steve, i like others didnt find myself skipping ahead at all. im in the same boat, i had to quite my ifr training 2yrs ago after getting 3/4 through it, its like starting over from the beginning.
Hey Steve. RUclips pushed this one up again and I just watched through the whole thing a second time. This is an amazing video. You can literally feel the pressure in this situation. Congratulations!
Great video. You were right there for landing and missed some good chowder, a 3 min walk from transient parking! I'm a VFR student and will only pick the best days to visit KHAF once I get my ppl.
Great work. I think I'm going to watch this several times. Practicing approaches to a (real) overshoot is an excellent idea. It's dangerous to fixate on the idea that approaches will always succeed. Then it'll feel wrong when they fail. You don't want to feel that when you're busy. Even VFR, it's not a bad idea to have flown the trip in your head before you get into the machine. IFR, there's more than one possibility to consider.
Your videos are always educational, interesting and FUN! I am contemplating getting my private ticket, just have to find time to do it. Your videos make me want to do it more and more. Thanks for great content here and on your website.
Great stuff. Really felt the level of saturation just sitting at my desk. I think running to the 20mins actually helps convey the sense of workload! Keep it up !
What a great CFII, what a brutal clearance, and what a nice job you did! I got my IFR in April and love flying "in the system". I worry much less filing on my XC trips around the Great Lakes region, which throw a lot of wx such as marine layers at an unsuspecting VFR pilot. Get the ticket, you won't regret it! Subscribed.
Excellent video! I'm sure I'll watch this one over and over as it's in my neck of the woods. Really looking forward to the uncut version. Thanks for all you do! Clear skies and tailwinds........ (ok, not so much on this video!)
Awesome thanks! uploading the uncut version now - 4GBs! it's a 45 min time line of the IFR flight we did the following day - it will make for a great episode as well; But the uncut version is non stop interesting. It will be on the Patreon feed tonight assuming the upload doesn't fail again (it just did and I had to restart it :(
Great video. You looked pretty task saturated during that flight :) I did that same clearance from KSQL about a month ago right after I got my IFR rating. Wow. Took me three times to read it back correctly.
Thanks for the video. Still working away on my PPL. You guys are helping me to learn what goes on flying IFR. When I'm ready to get IFR training, it will be with The Finer Points.
IMHO, the best way to learn and deal with task saturation during IFR flight is with a flight simulator (FTD). The instructor was awesome to alleviate the task saturation for you during approach. Great video and instructor!
Really good video! I like your learning clips. They are so inspiring and sort of "true" comparing to those "auto pilot" jet liners where everything looks "soo easy" :) All the best!
Great stuff again, thanks a lot. It seems scary. I haven't even got my night VFR rating yet, which is a prerequisite for IR, and doesn't normally come with the PPL. But definitely something I want to do in the long run to expand my envelope of conditions in which I can fly.
Fantastic! I am going through my IFR training and fly in the Bay Area. Great to see the same approaches. I wish I could record and publish my flights too but my flight instructor does not like the publishing part.
I think that’s phenomenal multitasking that airline pilots would have a hard time.
the instructor is so good at teaching
Could have watched an hour of this
STEVE, YOU COULD HAVE WENT TO AN HOUR, i WAS TOTALLY HOOKED ON THIS VIDEO. Wow, i'm learning a lot watching you struggle through IFR training, but I know it's just the process every student has to go through. I look forward to the day I go through it.
Jason is a great teacher with a great style of teaching...great editing I did not skip ahead once
Thank you sir!

Sure thing!
I really appreciate this feedback Gary - it is rewarding to know you're enjoying the full episodes - I open live with a cut for several days while I trim and tighten, refining the story. that that doesn't include the day or two it takes to organize and sync the raw footage.
I like the saturation and juggling explanation. That's exactly how it feels adjusting to instrument flying.
Alright, that's enough of me freeloading. I have to join your patreon, these videos are too good. And the less edited ones you talked about? I need that in my life.
Right on! Thanks! I just uploaded a 45 min uncut IFR lesson with Jason from the day after this flight for the Patreon supporters :)
I've flown with a lot of instructors over the years. This fellow seems like he's great to fly with. Cool video!
That has got to be the longest IFR clearance I've ever heard! Great work!!
I know, right? I love that I caught the moment I gave up on copying it, so clearly on camera :)
Didn't even get through the ad and already liked it.. I have faith in you.
Haha - awesome thnx! And as for "the ad" you're talking about my initial quick plug of the website, yes? Because there should not be any ads running ahead of this video... Awesome work dude! Nothing better than morning IFR flying along the advection fogged out California coastline!
I loved the way the instructor briefed and explained how to stay ahead of the airplane and to know how to back away from the saturation point.
That was an overload on my brain just watching it! I would love to have that guy as an instructor though, he's a natural teacher.
Awesome video. Been there. I was a mess and all over the place in the beginning of my ifr. One of the most challenging things I have accomplished as an adult was earning that rating. Thanks so much for sharing.

Best video for us learning approaches. Flying the approach as a student is so stressful and I get task saturated. I like how Jason is so relaxed. Watching you doing the approach reminds me of me doing my approach and is refreshing

Schteevie, I gotta say I have a lot of respect for you as a pilot. You're always learning and pushing your skills. That was something I used to emphasize as I taught. Jason's a great instructor. I wish I flew with more CFIs like that in my training. Looking out for your flair change one of these days ;)
Appreciated! I will get there one day :)
Awesome video. I'm not the only one struggling through my IFR training
You got this! (but hopefully you'll get it faster than I did :).

I was always scared shitless flying single engine in hard IMC-- "in lycoming we trust" as my instructor put it
This was great! Seriously when the video ended I was surprised because it felt like only 5 minutes had passed. It can be hard to take 2 hours worth of flying and condense it while still maintaining the quality, feel, and pertinent information, but you did a great job on this video. Thanks so much!
Instrument flying separates the pilots from the joy riders. This was a great teaching video on so many levels.
Blue skies.
As Gary said, this was a well done video. I start my IFR soon, and really appreciate Jason's calm demeanor.
OMG, I love you videos. I'm learning a lot just watching your experience. I hope you never stop because as a private pilot I can relate to your experiences. This is truly the beauty of RUclips because it's free learning. THANK YOU for your videos. I'm a subscriber
This guy is an amazing cfii & just an amazing teacher in general
Another great video and appears to be excellent instruction from Jason. Can tell he's really into instructing and not just trying to build time to get to an airline gig. Keep it going Steve, the light bulb will go off soon and things will start falling into place!
Hah! Nice. I was just at SCFC this evening for one of their great safety seminars. This one was with one of the controllers from NorCal TRACON.
Awesome old school flight chops! much more relateable, can't wait to get into some IFR training myself some day..
+Liam - cool yeah, I'll be continuing to mix in "old school" stuff for sure!
If you decided to get into more informational flying videos again I wouldn't be disappointed!
halfway through my private pilot at UND, after seeing you go for instrument ratings is giving me the excitement for going for it.
Super cool! I grew up in Half Moon Bay and always wondered how little planes landed with our heavy fog. Awesome video
I really appreciate you filming this, as a student currently learning instrument, i'm getting a lot of good information about how to stay ahead of the aircraft.
Keep at it, keep building your proficiency and it will feel natural soon enough! My instrument students loved relating to this video! Great job!
I felt like I was right there with you guys! Phew awesome Steve and Co...Loved it. I think I have a small headache now....
This is the BEST aviation VLOG on RUclips, Excellent video guys, Thank you
Bonus points for doing it without an HSI! Don't worry, the juggling gets much easier, and by time your check ride comes, you should feel like you have plenty of time before the approach.
Great video, as a VFR only pilot I find the IFR training your doing fascinating. Keep the vids coming
Steve Jason.
Going through my IFR training right now. Great stuff, thanks for posting!!!!
I know it’s been a year but how is (or did) your training going. I just shot my first ILS to minimum and now I’m hooked on IFR flying.
This video is awesome! I'm going through IFR training now and seeing this put into practice on a low ifr day is awesome.
wish Jason was in florida, he is very easy to understand and listen to. great job again steve, i like others didnt find myself skipping ahead at all. im in the same boat, i had to quite my ifr training 2yrs ago after getting 3/4 through it, its like starting over from the beginning.
Great instrument video. Great instructor. I really like his perspective on the whole instrument flying thing. Thanks.
Hey Steve. RUclips pushed this one up again and I just watched through the whole thing a second time. This is an amazing video. You can literally feel the pressure in this situation. Congratulations!
AWESOME !!!!! I'm about to start my instrument rating training. This is great inspiration! :D
Thanks for a great IFR Video! I too have transition to dedicated tail wheel and currently working on my IFR rating in my Citabria. Great stuff Steve!
That is a tough skill to learn and I welcome you sharing your mistakes during the process. Another great video.
This is awesome, Steve! I got my IFR in July and have started making videos of the flights, I know first hand how you feel when you become overwhelmed
Can't wait for the next episode! Jason is a really great instructor, the content of this video got me very interested. Thank you very much Steve!
Great video. You were right there for landing and missed some good chowder, a 3 min walk from transient parking! I'm a VFR student and will only pick the best days to visit KHAF once I get my ppl.
This is an incredibly well edited video. Greatly appreciated!
Thanks! I appreciate the feedback - it is a tough balance to keep the nerdy pilot details while also making an engaging story.
Great video and very good flight instruction - I really like Jason's approach to flight training via task saturation!
Thanks for sharing! I think Instrument flying can be the most intimidating thing! But it also looks like a lot of fun!
It will be on the Patreon feed tonight assuming the upload doesn't fail again (it just did and I had to restart it :(
Good stuff, man. It takes me back to my IFR training. SO much to do and stay on top of.
Great video. You looked pretty task saturated during that flight :) I did that same clearance from KSQL about a month ago right after I got my IFR rating. Wow. Took me three times to read it back correctly.
Glad it wasn't just me :) Jason wasn't kidding when he said "It's a bear" about that clearance!
Great video! More than excellent Instructor technique - way more. Thanks.
Thanks for the video. Still working away on my PPL. You guys are helping me to learn what goes on flying IFR. When I'm ready to get IFR training, it will be with The Finer Points.
Great instructional video! I, too, am in the midst of instrument training. Keep up the good work!
But definitely something I want to do in the long run to expand my envelope of conditions in which I can fly.
what a great instructor.
Excellent how you edited it, showing the cockpit, then the ground explanation
Fantastic! I am going through my IFR training and fly in the Bay Area. Great to see the same approaches. I wish I could record and publish my flights too but my flight instructor does not like the publishing part.
