Please make more of these practice videos. I’m actually considering buying your book. I’ve been learning piano by sheet music for 3 years now and your practice videos really opened up how easy it is to improvise. Thank you, Nahre
The balancing point tip is so unbelievably helpful, it's one of those things that are just known to most pianists but isn't easily acquired for hobbyists like myself. Much appreciated Nahre, very useful video. Can't wait to start implementing.
I just want to say, as a non pianist, that I really enjoy your videos. Even though I can't play piano, I feel inspired to do so. Even though I barely understand your concepts etc..., I really enjoy how pleasant you are and how you present the material. Thanks for taking the time and making music and the videos. Keep it up.
Your 10 sec of Les Barricades Mystérieuses is more full, whole, deep, mellow and visceral than many other performances I’ve heard. Are you able to record a playing of Les Barricades Mystérieuses in full?
I’ve been playing piano for almost 8 years now and I am desperate to improve my trills, I cringe anytime I listen to myself play them 😂 this video was so helpful! Will definitely be using those exercises
I would like to learn piano some day but a fun fact. You just helped a gamer who plays "Osu" a rhythm tapping game which does require trills using keys on a keyboard. And you helped me improve tremendously. I can not only tap faster up to 850 taps a minute, but tap more consistently from the minor changes using the advice from this video. I'm sure it works wonders on a piano, thanks for the insightful video.
Litteraly yesterday I was doing trills on my knee, asking myself "How could I get better at it ?" And you just blessed my day with this video. Thank you.
The pinky and ring finger trilling is the most annoying out of all of them! La Campanella is especially good at killing the poor ring and pinky fingers, so is Chopin’s Chromatique etude. Very nice video as always; your animations are definitely superb. Trilling is one of my weak points so I will try out some of your exercises. I especially liked your balance example, i.e. the pencil example. I never thought of it that way.
I think the second etude you’re able to get away with 3-4 chromatic runs, stuff like hammerklavier 1st or op111 2nd mvt is just impossible to use 3-4. Most pianists cheat during these movements by missing out a note in the trill when they reach for a chord below
banson houry I am studying Chopin’s Chromatique etude and you cannot get away with all 3-4 fingerings. It'll just end up being harder and diminish the entire purpose of playing the etude. Missing a note in a trill could arguably make the melody clearer due to no clashing of the trill notes with the melody line, which creates dissonance. Such is the case with Beethoven’s third movement of Waldstein; many pianists substitute a note of the trill for a note of the melody to juxtapose the melody from the trill. Personally, I would prefer a piece be played as written, and I favour the trill notes not be substituted. While yes, some pianists do substitute trill notes to cheat, I would also think some concert pianists are capable of performing the trills featured in Hammerklavier and op. 111 despite their sheer technical and musical difficulty but don’t for the sake of emphasizing the melody.
banson houry It is in most cases more demanding than a pinky trill, especially because of the dyads you have to play with the same hand. There's also a section in which you have to swiftly alternate between the 4-5 fingers as you're descending while playing dyads with, again, the same hand. That, to me, is much more challenging than a solo pinky trill. Nevertheless, in my original comment, I stated that Chopin’s Chromatique is good at torturing your 4-5 fingers (which I think is pretty clear haha), not that it includes trills. Cheers,
Honestly all your trills are incredible lol. For some reason trills and strangely certain arpeggios are troubling for me. I was floored by how smooth your 3-4, 4-5, and 3-5 were because my fingers quaked at the strength I observed there
Just found your channel and this is the second video I've watched. I really appreciate your calm, detailed and comprehensive teaching style. And the video production quality is excellent. Looking forward to exploring more of your content.
Thank you so much! This is exactly what I needed right now! I'm working on a Mozart sonata (no.8, in A minor) and the trills are SO difficult. I'm planing on playing it on my audition to music school, I hope I'll succeed.
Ah Nahre you saved my life, I have less than a month to play Winter Wonderland by Harry Connick. The tremolos (in threes) were in sane but I followed your instructions and worked them out!!!👌💕💕✌️
Hi! So, I watched this a couple of years ago, and meant to start practicing my trills. Life intervened, though, and it took me a while to get around to it. However, I would often recall your demos in the video, and have been practicing most days (slowly at first to avoid injury, of course) for a couple of months. Since I don't have a piano right now, I've had to make do with table tops, etc., but they work pretty well. Also, when watching Barry Harris' videos (and your bebop video with him) I became interested in his "dim 6" scale, worked out the fingerings, AND his block-chord style of playing (like George Shearing), so have included multiple-note trills in my practice. Thanks for being here to remind and encourage us in our practice!
Thank you for GREAT lesson! I'm an armature pianist, have spend many time for various piano technique. I've never seen like this brilliant lecture about trill!
Unbelievable skill. I play piano since i was 4 (for 13 years) and i never learnt how to do trills. It is the only one thing i cannot do. I think they are a natural thing, you can do them or you can't. I think that if you are not able, you cannot learn. Anyways nice video. Hope i will do them nice as you one day.
Adore your playing and teaching ability. I'm just a guy who accompanies himself as he sings. Focus is mainly on the voz but learning to be a better support watching your videos makes me think better on my piano accompaniment. Oh also love the pencil balance and the wrist rotation drill. Simply amazing! Never really thought of it that way but makes me feel more balanced. Thank you for what you do...
I'm really, REALLY grateful for your lever visualization (practicing trills on a pen). Never would've thought of that. It's so effective and fitting for trills that it scares me. In fact, I would even go so far as to say that this eventually helps in legato playing too! Also, I dig those transitions of trilling on random surfaces. :)
And how do you advise the trill-melody in pieces such as Hungarian rhapsody 12 Liszt or Lacampanella etude Liszt? I am all ears.... I've been a concert pianist for years but found myself without a piano for about 25 years....rusty...but currently able to reaquaint myself with the passion of the greatest gift anyone could have if blessed with it in our pianos.... I praise God for such a wonderful gift and the composers who brought us the finest music we will ever see. Timeless
Thx Nahre, a timely video, my trills suck and now I'm off to check out your arpeggio video, subscribed, your presentation is amazingly detailed and easy to follow.
Agree, I love that piece. It sounds magical on the harpsichord, I think it is more of a challenge to play well on the piano. Also I want to point out that it is by Couperin, not Rameau as it said in the graphic

Hanon, The Trill Exercise, #46 in all major and minor keys. You will become a master triller. But you also need to practice each different fingering in triplets. This gave me an incredible trill. And use the finger couplings in this video that Hanon doesn’t mention.
Those practice tips really inspire me. I wish you made a more thorough video on how to practice chord voicings (in the classical sense) more effectively - I often find it hard to bring out the notes I want and the dynamic ratios between them clearly in specific situations, and especially so of this is the first chord after a silence (take for instance Beethovens 4th concerto opening) Thank you and say hi to Bobby!
Good video but I wish you had also mentioned sharp/flat trills: I find such trills much trickier because the fingers are on different heights to begin with and it almost always sounds uneven or my fingers just get tired quickly :(
Had to slow down the 7, 8, 9 and 10 per beat to see how it feels. It actually is an awesome exercise and not so hard to do right when you memorize the patterns in your head, the problem is playing with your lightening speed... it'll take me some months of good work i reckon. Thanks for sharing
This is cool, I liked the idea of writing the trill out and trying it out at different subdivisions/speeds. Also, I find that practicing chromatic scales with alternate fingerings, 1&2(&3), 3&5(&4), 4&5(&3), 3&4(&5), and 1&2, can be helpful
Very nice sounds, and very clever ideas. And whoa, you're fast! I never thought of using more than two fingers for a trill, sharing the load. But then again, I'm a guitarist, so I'm trill-challenged and only my left hand really gets it. Maybe that's why BB King wrote The Trill Is Gone? ;)
Saw this video earlier today and ignored it. Then I seated and began learning Vivaldi's spring. Got frustated with trills and opened youtube, and here the video was again. RUclips knows things about me before I myself do!

Excellent tutorial! By the way, how fast did you set the metronome in the minute 6:29? Was it 73 bpm? I can't see it well...
Thank you for the video!!! I've been working on my trills and I noticed they were becoming weak. This video helps me a lot!
My proplem is that one finger is slower than the others

I guess you could call this a trill drill

Bruh :(
I need a level -1 video
I’m playing Bach’s Italian Concerto and the trills in the first movement last 4 measures long, and there are 2 of them. Really need help on that.
Much needed for a poor kid struggling with the trills in op111! thank you!
I'm glad I can help thanks!!

“Also 3,4”

I was surprised how smooth your 3-4 trill is. Your 4-5 is also quite respectable 😂
seriously 😄
Anything with 5 in spunds terrrible for me lol
Anything with 4 or 5 makes my trills sound like trash. My ring and pinkie are so weak
