Its always nice to look at half sovereignd. In the old days, this is the gold coin that average workers got in a weeks pay. Working people never got sovereigns, they of seen one or two, but never able to own one.
Hi Philip. Yes, the coin was a rarity to the working masses. It's still fairly rare today as most haven't got the money to pay for the gold/coin market value (even more so for a full Sovereign!). Cheers
A lot of people seem to think people in the old days got a halfsovereign a day. It's laughable, it was just over a week's pay for an average worker. A solder in the trenches only got 6 shillings a week, people have no idea. Workers heard about sovereigns, and may of seen one, but never able to own one, unless you had a really good job.
