@@PeteJohnsMusic The EQ during live record is, to me, like the "Air" button on the Focusrite except that it gives me full control over the frequency adjustments I want to make. With the right settings you can basically duplicate the exact air boost if that's what you really want.

Hi Pete I got the Steinberg UR22C following your reviews. Its fantastic bit of kit. What I don't often see in reviews of this interface is the software amp sims and FX mixer that comes with it. I have used mine as a standalone amp sim direct into a PA or with just the headphone for practice.

You forgot to mention the onboard DSP chip on the Steinberg which means that you are able to track with zero latency and fx on (compressor-eq-reverb) and decide if you want to track them or track without the fx and just let them help you while tracking. And they are pretty good fx to. You can use them also when you do live sessions on RUclips, Facebook, instagram etc and play with fx and with ZERO latency. Thanks a lot for this video. I really don’t understand why some people still choose the Focusrite. Your videos are a pleasure to watch. Rock on my friend. Greetings from Greece!

Don't forget that the Steinberg has a built-in DSP. That means you can hook it up to your laptop or iOS device, fire up DSPMixFX and have the DSP apply (very very good) reverb, compression & overdrive/amp/cabinet simulation to the input signal without touching the CPU in the PC and essentially no latency whatsoever. That is extremely useful.

Right on! For me the built-in DSP is the game changer and huge difference between these 2 interfaces. To be able to record voice or guitar and to monitor them with immediate (no-latency) FX is truly an immense feature for me! Also we don't have to record those immediate effects in our DAW, that's the best of both worlds!

  • @somebodyelseuk

The other difference that a lot don't realiise, USB-C does not mean USB3.
I know for a fact that FR Gen 3 are still USB2 - their tech service told me.
    The UR22C is USB3.
USB-C is just the plug type. USB2 and 3 are the technologies. If they don't specify USB3, then it'll be USB2, even though they may have USB-C cables.

I may be in the minority here, but I'm absolutely thrilled that Steinberg chose to put the phantom power switch on the back. I don't use phantom power, and with the switch being on the back and out of the way, there's much less chance of it accidentally being bumped on and sending 48v through any devices that wouldn't take kindly to it.

    • @silentstormstudios
      @silentstormstudios Год назад

I'm on the other side of this one. I do use 48v phantom power to power my condenser mics as well as my active guitar direct box. I also have my interface on a rack shelf in my studio rack, which means it's not easy to reach the rear of the unit. Having the switch in the back is not at all convenient in this scenario and I'd much rather have the phantom power button on the front panel. It's frustrating because Steinberg has this button on the front of most of their interfaces, except for this one. I currently have a UR242, which has the 48v button on the front. My UR22C will arrive next week, and I'm expecting that I will then keep my interface on the desk in front of my rack rather than on the rack shelf in the rack. Not a huge deal, but still not that convenient.

32-bit is inaudible but it certainly exists. Sourcing in 32-bit just means you have more leeway with pre-amp gain settings and can sort things out in DAW. Too quiet? Raising it up (supposedly) won't raise the noise floor. Too loud? No clipping, just lower it in DAW.
It's a headache reducer. I'll probably jump on the Steinberg as a result (plus the added flexibility of the features it has over the Focusrite)

I’ve had the Steinberg ur22c for nearly a year and the reason I chose it over the Scarlett was the Cubase 10.5 AI software that came with it. I went to and fro between the two interfaces for ages.
Cubase was a real learning curve after my old DAW but a fantastic piece of kit. I have since upgraded to Cubase 11 Elements which is the basic version of Cubase but all I need right now. When Cubase 12 comes out next year I may upgrade to Cubase Artist?
As far as the recording transparency, I believe my Behringer umc22 which I used previously was better when I compare recordings on it against the Steinberg. From what I have read the focusrite beats it in that department as well.
But all in all even with a standard performance 6 yr old win 10 laptop it is a pretty stable setup. I record all my instrumental tracks at 48k 24 bit and render them to 24 bit mp3.

@@PeteJohnsMusic Another difference that can impact audio interface/latency, etc. Is that usb 2 is half duplex and 3 is full duplex. usb2 uses a polling technique to commnicate, where as 3 doesn't need need to do this.. The Steinberg has 2 Mono Inputs, which you can connect inside your DAW to 1 Stereo Input. If you own 2 Stereo Hardware Synths, you only can use one at same time (or 2 when record them in mono). Now you have to expand for more Inputs..

while it advertises being 32 bit, its actually 32 bit integer which is a bit gimmicky - since its not float, you still have to mind the gains. In high end field recording equipment, 32 bit FLOAT is a huge deal because you adjust any clipping in post to recover perfect audio without signal loss. Anything other than float leaves clipping 'burned in' to the recording.

Yeah, to be honest I don’t bother with 32-but audio in any way in recording. 23-bit has such low noise floor and good dynamics that it more than does the job in my opinion.

I have ur22c and find it very quiet with both a CAD condesor mic and dynamic mics even up to the red clipping level on the ur22c. The only issue is the headphone jack could be a little louder. Apparently the impedance of the headphones affects the volume level.
I am using this with a Hp win 10 laptop with a SSD. I also use some of the keyboard and strings models off garage band which I output from an iPad to my mixer then into channel 1 of the Steinberg to my Laptop. This setup works brilliantly and have plenty of gain.
I tossed up between the Scarlett and the Steinberg and my choice came down to the software supplied with each interface. The steinberg comes with Cuba’s AI 10.5 which although not the full version has plenty of amp sims and effect plugins for what I need. I must say the steinberg is heavy and feels like a quality build when you turn the control knobs. In NZ these are about $70.00 cheaper than the Scarlett.

Maybe there’s a need for 32-bit floating, but for most creators 24-bit is more than enough. Use whatever works for you and your workflow. 👍😎

I believe the 32-bit floating point sample captures are only used internally to maintain mathematical precision in DSP operations (which would make sense). The data received by your computer is 24 bits resolution. There would be no point in transferring 32 bit samples to the computer (TBH even 24 bit sample width is massive overkill already); no ear on earth could ascertain any difference despite what some vociferous people say (and is backed up by every single blind A/B test ever performed). For comparison, the very best analogue tape recordings had a noise floor equivalent to 11-bit wide samples. CD and DVDs use 16-bit samples.
