Judges are bound by the law as to the maximum sentence they can impose for a given crime. There's no death penalty in NY State. Remember, the sentence was 20 years to LIFE. There's no way he was ever getting out of prison.

He was sentenced to '20 years to life' and would likely have never been released. The 'to life' part of the sentence means he was sentenced to an indeterminate number of years. The girl's family agreed to the plea deal to avoid the trial.

Yes you are correct, some police smile when a convict gets terminated by his peers, but most police officers do not appear smiling if THEY are sent to prison and some of them get terminated there. These are preventable murders that the inmates, jailers and the rest of us are guilty of allowing. All killing outside the Law, is murder and we are all accessories after the fact, it isn't something to smile about, unless you enjoy pain and suffering. Thus it is easy to see what kind of a person that Sheriff is.

What constitutes protective confinement in the United States? Was this prisoner just placed into the general prison population? Interested to know. Is it entirely within the court's purview to place a convict wherever they deem appropriate regardless of the crime or convict"s criminal record? I think that anyone would have projected this outcome!!
Guards were probably horrified about what he did, leaked what he did to everyone, put him in the general population, and looked the other way.

R/woosh me but the fact the dude was in a prison with them implies they did similiar if not worse crimes.
