Now, onto Supergiant's other games! Bastion will be perfect is you loved Transistor because it more-or-less follows the same recipe; a beat-em-up accompanied by rich, narrated story. Pyre is my personal favorite; the story, art and music was simply mindblowing, and I've never been more emotionally attached to a game's characters and their struggles.
I shit you not, I had a huge nostalgia boner listening to Pyre's soundtrack... one week after completing the game. XD

For those who don't follow the indie scene much, I HIGHLY implore you to explore Supergiant's three games. They are my favorite indie games and sadly, the noise died down quite quickly. I love this studio. If you want a brawler, pick up Bastion. If you want a sports-like RPG (That's right, a sports game with RPG elements) with an amazing text based story, pick up Pyre. Bricky does a great job outlining Transistor. All of these games are 20$ on PC, PS4, and varied other platforms. (Still holding out for Pyre on Switch for the local multiplayer.) Some things that these games have in common, is amazing stories, art and music.
Glad you gave Transistor a shot, Bricky-Brick. Have a good one.

Pyre is NOT a sports game though. It is a visual novel first and foremost - 80% of your time will be spent reading and talking to magnificently written characters, and the rest is a high-adrenaline arcade game, which is also super fun and follows all the best Supergiant gameplay traditions of intertwining story into the gameplay, plus motivating variety.

Oh, this video gave my heart the good feels. I initially picked up this game because of the blend of art nouveau (my favourite art movement) and cyberpunk and the music direction. It was on my "GameStruck" list thingie as soon as I thought to do it. The game and story mean a great deal with me. To see a video like this make it onto your main channel, with an ending message I hope a lot of people pay attention to, makes me genuinely happy. Thank you.

BRICKY! I've been saying it for months and I'll keep on saying it. You have to play Valiant Hearts: The Great War. In a way, it's similar to Transistor. It has pretty fun gameplay and an amazing story, as well as probably the best character development I've seen in a game ever. And the ending, just... wow. It had a lasting effect on so many players and almost every youtuber that played it has cried (for real tho).
Yes, I know the game is a little old, but hey, it's a fucking good game. And with you showing your appreciation for great storytelling, I think you should definitely give Valiant Hearts a try.

I love that transistor's gameplay has flexibility, having come from roguelites it was a nice change of pace to be able to slow down and think through each new encounter while still having the choice and rush of action rpg gameplay. I found the planning tests easy as hell compared to the other tests so I'll probably be looking for more turn-based/strategy games in the future

From their first game "Bastion", to "Transistor" and their most current game "Pyre", SuperGiant Games have proven themselves time and time again to be amazing storytellers. The way they told the story of Bastion and how they made even the enemies and villains of the story to be wholly sympathetic, to the beautiful way they told the story of Transistor and Pyre, is simply amazing
Our boy Bricky here is 100% right. Go get any of the games made by SuperGiant, and I guarantee you that you will have a good time. Thanks for showing this Bricky, more people deserve to know these under-appreciated games

This is great! I fell in love with the soundtrack about a year ago and I havent actually played this game and I will someday, but Ive watched the entire playthrough because I wanted to learn more about the story and I knew watching the cutscenes wouldnt be enough on its own. Because you get so much information from even the fight scenes and all in between, mainly from the person trapped inside the transistor who I simply refer to as "Him" since we NEVER learn his name and yet he is a very likable character. You can say what you want about the ending but I loved it and it made me cry. And I cant stress enough how knowing the story a little better adds to the already amazing soundtrack that you could appreciate even without playing the game. It goes without saying that the visuals are amazing as well.

If you liked Transistor, i can recommend another "indie" game called Oxenfree. Purely story and character driven, little to no gameplay at all. It's practically a horror game in disguise. It also has that nostalgic feel of 80s movies about teens dealing with some supernatural stuff.
The only problem is the DLC this game has. The DLC is completely free and adds a NG+, which can change your ending (and there is a lot of endings). The PROBLEM with that DLC is that it inserts a scene right before credits roll, and i think it greatly reduces impact of the ending. Imagine the post-credit sequence of SOMA being before credits. It still kinda works, but it's less impactful that way. That's why, if it's possible - play the game without DLC first. It's very short anyway, about 5 hours.

Ah yes, Transistor, one of the few games whose soundtrack sits on my phone, so I can listen to it whenever I want. Also, good god, the numbers of hours I spent in the practice room just playing with different combinations. I remember Jaunt and Breach being a favorite combo of mine. Damage to any enemies between your start and stop points is indispensable. Ok, i need to go start a new save now, it's been too long since I played.
Oh! Bricky! Go play Pyre! It's SuperGiant's newest game. Mechanics can be kinda clunky, but it lives on it's characters personalities and the story of the world they live in.

    tbh I preferred Bastion.
Not to say that Transistor wasn't good, because I adore it.
Just that Transistor fight mechanics were fun most of the time, but ended up boiling down to "run around until your yellow bar is full then damage them. now run around again". Also the final boss was so easy. And the death mechanic could be an absolute nightmare depending on your setup.
Bastion offered a more simplistic gameplay, but it was more consistently good. The story also moved me a lot more than Transistor's. That feeling when you start your first replay D''''''''' :

  • @NotSpecialDude
    @NotSpecialDude 6 лет назад

Good video buuuuuuut.... And it kinda pains me to say this.... I disagree with the value of gameplay vs story.
While I agree that a good story can save an otherwise bad game, it isn't the end all be all. My personal favorite examples, are Donkey Kong Country 2 and Mario 64. Yeah, these games have massive pedigrees so I could lean on their gameplay aspects, but the part I want to draw attention to is the atmosphere they create. DKC2 is dark, foreboding and filled with a sense of adventure. And Mario 64 is colorful and covers a wide spectrum of joy. They both have unique tones and vision which is why when people mod these games, you can always tell them apart.
Or look at XCOM, the newer games have stories that are ok but the most remembered parts to most fans are the little stories that we made surrounding our favorite soldiers. The tales of how baddass mcree got three kills with a grenade to save his squad, or the last stand of a female sniper surrounded by aliens.
My point, is that games don't need narrative to really do well. We have movies, books and comics who do these things better most of the time. But games are interactive, they can make us feel. Anger, Joy, anguish, sadness... So many emotions can come from a setting, line or character. But sometimes emotions don't make logical sense. Which is why they pair so well with gaming. After all what in games makes sense?

One of my faovurite quotes from bastion that applies to both the first 2 supergiant games is "most stories start at the beginning, ain't so simple with this one" and even if in both games I feel like I got a solid understanding and appreciation for the story after playing them once, the way the game can be priamrily gameplay for msot of its runtime, and still the whole time be slowly building its story into one that makes you think about events and how things all reach into each other is just, so good, supergiant shows such a good understanding for what video games can do without feeling like the game needs to shy away from what it is. I played hades when it came out and only recently after hades 2 started going through their backlog and am currently on pyre but its been such a fuin and interesting journey.

  • @MelvaCross

Transistor has been my favourite video game for almost 4 years now and it only gets better the more think about it. I call this the "aftertaste" of a game.
The gameplay of Transistor is good. It's not for everyone, but it's good and it's deep. The story is not easily understood and you miss most of the subtleties when playing the game for the first time. So the first taste was good. A little less spicy than Bastion, but still good.
    But then you replay it.
You notice the subtleties, you understand more about the story, you streamline your fighting style, you learn that each ability in your arsenal is a reflection of the person who were absorbed into the transistor (like Sybil's charm) and you come up with all these theories "What is the Country? What do the Selections mean? Who is the Mysterious Man who saved Red?".
The more I think about that game, the better it gets. That's what I mean by aftertaste. And Transistor is the tastiest game I've ever played and I enjoy this taste every time I replay this beautiful game.
Also Darren Korb is a freaking genius! Him being a childhood friend of Supergiant's founders and being on these games super early on, means that his music inspired the art and design and vice versa. The soundtrack fits the game so well and is really nice to listen to on its own as well!

Maybe look up Furi? It's a decent game, good visuals, inspired by Afro Samurai and it's got some solid ass gameplay. Idk why but this game made me think of it

I hope you play Bastion either on your channel or in what spare time you can find (I need to find time for Pyre myself) because while the story didn't move me quite as much as Transistor did it's absolutely worth playing. The folks at Supergiant are amazing people and I'm glad they are still finding new fans.

I've always been a more gameplay focused when it comes to story as attention span is as smalls as a squirrel and when I play a game, I want to feel excited, hyped, amazed about what I've done and feel the progression of both me and who I'm playing. That's why I haven't been into RPGs alot lately since alot of the ones (I've played at least) that have a good narrative, generally left me bored and angry due to it's slower, grindy, and tedious gameplay, uninteresting design, constant down time and the thing that alot RPGs fall into is having wins and loss besided by numbers and RNG which is 2 things I don't really enjoy in any game. But that being said, I do find story to be something you should try having in most games since it gives you a reason to continue and make things personal for both you and who you are playing creating this imaginary bond as you constantly try to control your character to success as you see them grow and become stronger because of you, making each victory they have feel like yours.

If you enjoyed transistor, please please please play the other game they made, bastion. Bastion was such an incredible experience for me. I doubted playing it because of the art style but when I finally started, I played for days. The game had me constantly searching for answers on google after I was done. The gameplay is amazing even thought it is so simple. I highly recommend you check it out

Try To the Moon. Heck, try the entire series, alongside a bird story and finding paradise. It's amazing and has a great soundtrack as well.

    - contains spoilers -
I found Transistor to be the most frustrating game that I have played so far this year.
Not because it was bad or any part of the gameplay frustrated me, but because of the "thematic" shift in it's story.
To elaborate: My main problem is that the game has a huge ammount of cyberpunk themes in it's first hour. Stuff like surveilance state, merging of technology/data and humans, a quasi illuminati group trying to take over the city.
But over the course of the story the villains fade and it becomes apparent that "the process" is essentially a man-made catastrophe and it's creators didn't intend for it to wipe out everything. One of the former villains even tries to help you in stopping it. So the villains fade and the main goal is to stop the process.
The first hour of this game is very impactful with it's cyberpunk themes. The visuals are beautiful, futuristic looking yet somewhat dark and gloomy. The city is empty, you don't find a single person which creates this kind of lonely atmosphere. You are on the run with only one companion in a now hostile environment. You have this scene where Red seems to be grieving over how things were before (the scene at her poster). When you get your first ability you get it from the remains of a person that is seemingly half turned into data and the ability description is a biography of that person, implying that this person has turned into the ability you are using. The music is absolutely brilliant and creates such a powerful atmosphere. You have the camerata that are presented to you as the main villains, an illuminati group that plans to take over.
All of these themes aren't something new for the cyberpunk genre, but they are executed so perfectly and in such a powerful maner that this alone would have made the game incredibly memorable even if it went with this somewhat "generic" cyberpunk approach.
But what would have made it truly unique is it's character dynamic, because you have an acting character that can't talk - Red - and a vocal character that can't act - the Transistor. So you would have the acting character act and the vocal character *interpreting* her actions and intentions but you would never truly know what Red actually wants to achieve, which would not just create a very interesting character dynamic but would also maintain a certain sense of uncertainty and make you wonder about what Red true motives are and it's a great setup for all kinds of twists.
You do have that in the story of the game with the twist that Red never intended to stop the process, as the Transistor made you think, but only wanted to save her lover and once she realises that that's an impossibility, she commits suicide.
This character dynamic would have made the game stand out and be truly unique in the cyberpunk genre. But with the shift in the story I wouldn't count this game to the cyberpunk genre, I'd say it merely has some cyberpunk themes.
I just feel like the story would have been much more powerful and interesting if it sticked to it's cyberpunk themes instead of having this "stop the apocalypse" shift that it did. I would have liked it way more if the villains remained the villains and for the process to be a tool of theirs, not the apocalypse.
You could have still had the same twist and essence of the story with it ultimately being a love story. Afterall Red's lover would still have to be freed from the Transistor. The game could have continued to have the Transistor lead us to think that Red wants revenge on the camerata and save the city from becoming a surveilance state with the twist being that in truth she only wants to get her lover back.
As it is I found myself loosing interest in the story once the villains disappeared and I kept playing the game for it's visuals, music and gameplay but not for the story anymore.
It just left me wondering "What if they did things differently".

To be honest, when I found you playing the game. The soundtrack was just so good when I heard the first song that I straight up listened to the whole soundtrack. The soundtrack is a great element of the game, it's like the icing on a cake.
Additionally, I'll agree with you on the aspect of storytelling, it's a major element of games, I'm actually a games design student in college and right now I am looking at different games and how they develop each section of those games. I'd have to say that the key to a good game is either the gameplay, or storyline (In my opinion). I'm still learning about games design and hoping to start working on games myself, videos like these are actually beneficial ngl. It helps people get a much better insight of what constructs a good game and what doesn't.
By the way Bricky, keep up the good work. I love your content!

bastion, their first game, was in my opinion a better game but not on the same level artistically (music, art, atmosphere) as transistor. still really fucking good on those fronts, but just not there yet. transistor isn't quite as good gameplay-wise but it's a masterpiece artistically.

It just feels weird to me but when i quit i come back again bc i know there is awesome story. so i wanna ask does the gameplay get better later ? cause for me it just doesnt click.

I like the video and agree with your assessment that you've left this on the backburner for too long but I must disagree with the part where you say that gameplay is simply a tool to tell a good story as I feel that it really depends on the game. It is not necessarily true and we have a host of games where the stories sometimes feel like a dressing for the game, games like Diablo-clones, Devil May Cry or even Warframe for example. They are great games with serviceable stories. I believe that it depends on what the goal of the creator is.
On a side note: The Souls series does world building remarkably with the item descriptions. Yet I feel that it's greatest achievement is not telling you a story but letting you live it out.

honestly, i picked up transistor ages ago (probs actually just a year ago) and then i raged quit on the first boss (or at least on of the first bosses). the main reason i quit is because lossing the abilities gave this lore nerd a fucking anxiety attack.
i picked it back up sometime after watching this video and i beat the boss in a couple of tries
imma gonna try to get all the way through, but with no way to use an alternative death penalty, i dont know if I'll be able to get through it

I don't like cyberpunk games but I still loved this. The aesthetics of it also help a lot. It has a lot of futuristic elements but it doesn't feel alien. It also has the same atmosphere that I perceive from nighttime in a present day city. With soft glows and lights from streetlamps and neon signs. And instead of having hologram billboards, the game world actually has paper posters. And there are other elements that give a slight sense of familiarity that makes it comfortable to explore the world of Transistor, as well as it makes the process and their effect on the game world appear more intimidating, more effective.
