When I was editing this one, I wasn't sure why I didn't put The Throne of Fire at the two spot. That's where it should have been. Thank you for this great slice of brilliant entertainment. You really do what you do so well. I loved all of this and will re-watch this a few times - thank you.
Many apologies, good sir. RUclips has been just eating comments left and right the last few weeks. That, or it's another Sword & Sorcery conspiracy. The Sword & Sandal people have been trying their best to bring Sword and Sorcery down. I have still yet to see the third Deathstalker. And I'm quite curious about it. It stars John Allen Nelson from Killer Klowns and Hunk as Deathstalker. I can see him in the role. Thanks as always for watching, your support, and taking the time to leave a second comment. @@AtomicSnackBar I am going to look into getting more Deathstalker - just watched Guardians of the Galaxy 3, I actually liked it, bit grim in the middle, but a nice film. I'm up to series 3 of My Name is Earl, really enjoying that.
@@wetdog1606 That is awesome to hear you are watching Earl. It ends on a cliffhanger unfortunately, but still very worth the watch. There is a sequel series, sorta, called Raising Hope. It's set in the same world, but has a different cast. Though Patty appears an appearance. That one starts strong, but gets a tad weak by the end.
@@AtomicSnackBar So here is a strange and possibly beer related thing - there is a plucky, march in the Showa Godzilla films that makes me smile and feel uplifted whenever I hear it - I suspect it is only in one film - I cannot find it. It is a variation on the 'ship leaving harbour' scene in the original Godzilla. Maybe I dreamed it. Really enjoying My Name is Earl. Ator - I have seen, Fighting Eagle and Iron Warrior - don't think I've seen the others - to be fair, I do sort of love the Ator films but I find them a tad boring. Beastmaster - only seen the first one. Sorry, I would expect more from myself - but they kind of edge the time, thing for me - I like mine, European, cheap - and full of unfounded hope. I tend to judge these films on a 5 point scheme - 1) Scenery/location - how it is set. 2) Hero - Does he look the part 3)Boobies , yeah it' shallow, but it helps me to buy into the barbarian...... no it's just shallow. 4) Unexpected gore that goes against the childish adventure 5) The Thing - it just tries, it has the feel, it makes the effort. Mythica series lacks in many of these points but has 5 - that might help to illustrate my point. Again, thanks - I'm going to watch this a few times - you make RUclips more - more.

But really, what year isn't the year for a good codpiece? And Deathstalker IV on VHS? Now that is spiffy. I don't think it's ever seen a DVD release. Which being a Corman production, you'd think it'd have several.

The third Deathstalker is the only one I haven't seen. It sounds neat though. And even though Rick Hill is my favorite Deathstalker, John Allen Nelson is a good choice as well. I can picture him in the role.
This takes me back to the 80's VHS days. The cover art of those Conan knock-offs really stood out when you walked into a video store (in many cases the cover art was a lot more spectacular than the actual movie). Personally I'm a fan of The Barbarians (1987) with David and Peter Paul and Richard Lynch.
The Barbarians is actually my favorite Sword & Sorcery film. I keep meaning to pick up the Kino blu-ray. I still just have the DVD double feature with it and The Norseman.
I dont have much to say about the movies other than I was the one that shaved his chest- but I always love seeing sword and sorcery videos from you pop up on my feed/notifications since I see so few people covering them and becuase you clearly are passionate about them

That is a good question. Any number of ways, really. These were all new, first time watches for me. But I'm not at liberty to discuss my method. Top secret clown business and all. I'm sure you understand. Always great to hear from you, Oz.
Italy in the 70s and 80s was just a magical place for b-movies and exploitation films. People call them knock-offs, but I just love the Italian genre pictures. There are even cases where I like the "knock off" better than the original. Deathstalker IV is great. A real return to the Sword & Sleaze genre of the first film.
"Tonino Ricci, who was also responsible for..." Yeah, perfect wording . I"liked the Manowar line for Thor. Didn't the heavy metal singer Thor do a song about Hundra? "There's thunder, on the Hundra..." Prosperi's great gifts to cinema were his mondo films, especially Africa, Blood & Guts. I agree about Siani. She was hot. "Baby come back, I'm stuck in Italy, and I just can't do more gigs like this..." Too bad there wasn't an Emanuelle vs. The Women on the Isle of Lesbos. I'm in witty form tonight, or so I am deluded into believing... Take it easy.
There's giants on the..........I'll just leave that there. But most excellent pull there, good sir. I just happen to be quite the fan of Jon Mikl Thor. The Unchained and Only the Strong albums are aces in my book. As to Prosperi, for a moment there you had me thinking I had made another goof. But turns out, there were two different Franco Prosperis who worked in Italian film. The Mondo guy was Franco E. Prosperi. But speaking of Emanuelle. I do wish Laura had had a starring role in a sword & sorcery film, rather than bit parts. That would have been just grande.

Growing up most of these Sword & Sandle flicks we watched were the B&W ones with Hercules played by both Steve Reeves & Peter Lupus which that one was in was in color & he ended up on Mission Impossible. All fun & 1960s. I have one on DVD with Peter & the lovely Helga Line who was a great Horror actress & one of the worlds drop dead gorgeous Ladys & one deadly & mean gals when she plays her horror roles, even meaner than the late great Ingrid Pitt. Only one woman was her equal & that was Barbara Steele.
Sword & Sandal is a world I have only just dipped my toes in. So my knowledge is very limited. But I did cover Hercules in the Haunted World, which I thought was a really neat film. As to Helga Line, I want to say I've seen Nightmare Castle with her and Barbara Steele. But darn if I can't remember for sure.
@@AtomicSnackBar Yes you sure did see her in that, she also had roles in The Blanchville Monster, The Lorely's Grasp (1974) , A very evil Vampire in Horror Rises From The Tomb, ( 1972) & she was in Hercules & the Tyrants of Babylon as one wicked lady. She did some sexy as heck comedy I've only seen a few episodes of called Allo Allo from the BBC. One talented & beautiful lady in her day. It may not be your cup of Tea but i have Barbara Steele's last film from 2012 called The Butterfly Room, EVIL as EVIL gets & she plays her role like the ultimate pro she is & trust me this film has one hell of an ending well deserved for her. Some minor trivia for you, when they did the film The Mask of Satan aka Black Sunday, they spelled her name wrong. Clash of Empires(2013) is really great. I found a copy at Big Lots for $2. Definitely worth picking up. It stars Christopher Judge(Teal'c from Stargate SG-1) and Bai Ling.
I've run across that one on streaming quite a few times. Haven't watched it yet, but fantasy films are pretty much the only genre of film I actually watch modern films from. So thanks for the tip, Joshua.
I had to smile at you, saying he failed his audition for Man o War. I'm from the UK and went to see that band at The Hummingbird in Birmingham in the 90s with my friend. It was a small venue, so more fun. After a thoroughly entertaining concert that was VERY loud, the group came and mingled with the fans, and we go to meet them and chat for a while, got signatures and took pics. They are Big men, all over 6 foot and very muscular. As teenaged girls, we thought they were very, very yummy 😁😁😍😍
That's awesome. I'm a big 80s metal fan and a big sword & sorcery fan, so I really dig Manowar's whole vibe and presentation. I also a big fan of Jon Mikl Thor. I highly recommend the Unchained album if you've never heard it. In the 80s he had a very similar thing as Manowar going on. Thanks for stopping by the Snack Bar, Miss Paws.

80s Italian Sword &Sorcery movies are not genre I'm terribly familiar with, so thanks for your expansive variety of interests and scantily clad blondes. The peroxide budget must have been on a separate line in the bookkeeping ledger. Hundra is the only one I think that I may have seen, but it slips my memory. Probably on one of those Mill Creek compilations. Your choice of most beautiful blondes, which is a hard call: Sondra Seini (?)is quite impressive. I dated a gorgeous blonde model in the late nineties who was 5'11" and missed her era. She would have fit right in with the look. I saw that Conan live show back in 1988! It was pretty cool. The music in the fantasy game commercial is from Holst's The Planets: Mars the Warbringer Used in... everything. And the inspiration for John Williams' Star Wars music. Trivia. You didn't mention this time about the availability of these flix. I'd like to check out a few, especially the one you compared to Excalibur. But they all look like a good time. Mucho enjoyo, my friend.
@The Wacky World Lounge - Sabrina Siani! Yeah. I just checked and RUclips has Hearts and Armour. So, on the list. I'll have to check into Deathstalker 1&4. And I bought a copy of Red Sonya on bluray and yeah.. es no too bueno. The score, however, is quite good. And there's always "Ar'nohld".
That's good thinking. I might have to speak with my account/lawyer/goat in people clothes about that. The peroxide budget has gotten pretty high around these parts as well. Even if I wear a hat most of the time. Hundra was indeed a good time. Though if the good Mr. Santiago was to only watch one of the aforementioned, I think Hearts and Armour is the way to go. It's kind of like Excalibur...but with a better looking cast. Funnily enough, I almost did mention the availability of these, even though I generally don't in Top List episodes. But long story short, Thor the Conqueror is the only one that is readily available on DVD. But, they are all right here on RUclips. The quality, as you saw, varies quite a bit. And 5'11, eh? You rascal, you.
@@tonysantiago255 There is a great four film DVD set that includes Deathstalker I & II, The Warrior and the Sorceress, and Barbarian Queen. But I'll tell you, Deathstalker I is mega sleazy. Hearts and Armour really could use some kind of modern release. I was surprised that such a well made movie isn't more well known.
@ The Wacky World Lounge - I checked the trailer for Deathstalker IV and it included a quick nipple flash. Which also happened to me and my ex on Hollywood Blvd. back in my 80s L.A. days. But that's another story. Unfortunately, the taller the hot blonde, the crazier. You can take that to the bank. I stretched all the way up to 5'6" in my youth. We made an odd couple.

That is very true. D&D and of course, Conan. Which is what really got the Sword & Sorcery boom going. So many great films were made just to get a bit of that sweet Conan action. Thanks for watching and for commenting on these, Don. I do appreciate it.
Good show. Can you find the movie (Castle In The Dessert) not the Jackey Chaine. The hero has ring with a red gem. Then he finds the castle with matching weapons. I have looked for this one a long time.
@@AtomicSnackBarnot much of one, to be honest. I'm currently trying to write and sell short stories in the Sci fi range but it's not going all that well. I wrote for a youtube channel at one point but they don't make those kind of videos any more so that fizzled out.
Those were the days. I remember going to the grocery store one night. My family often went late to avoid crowds. And our grocery store had a small video section. Several of the Deathstalker movies were right there in a row. I want to say all four even. To say those covers intrigued me would be quite the understatement.

I know you must have covered these in another video, but im still a fan of animation. In particular Wizards and Fire and Ice. Its hard for me to get into some sword movies, because I wasnt ever into "hair bands". Some of the Conan and just a few others hold my attention.
Yes indeed. I've covered both of those in the main Top Sword & Sorcery series. I don't remember which one Fire and Ice appears in, but Wizards is in Part III. Talk about great movies with beautiful animation. There truly is nothing these days that even compares. It seems that Fire and Ice is finally starting to get some attention. There is not only a comic coming out, but also a board game that looks really neat.
So I have to ask because when I see a title that has the word obscure I automatically wonder where I can watch these movies? As far as the films themselves each and every movie on this list looks super fun. Speaking of Deathstalker I have only ever seen the first two movies. It was really cool to hear that Rick Hill was able to return to the Deatstalker character…and speaking of Wonder Bread He-Man maybe they should make a movie of that. Anyway this was a highly enjoyable video good buddy. Now if you will excuse me I’m off on my own adventure with my trusty pink unicorn.
They are pretty darn obscure. Thor the Conqueror is the only one that is readily available on DVD. Some, like Deathstalker IV, has never even had a DVD release as far as I know. And the ones that do are either kind of questionable looking or well out of print. I have still yet to see the third Deathstalker. But did you know it stars John Allen Nelson of Killer Klowns as Deathstalker? Thanks for watching, pal-o-mino. I was pretty pleased I was able to squeeze in Wonder Bread He-Man and Prince Adam into this episode.
@@AtomicSnackBar Speaking of Prince Adam. I don’t know if you have see the Masterverse Prince Adam that’s coming out but let me save your eyeballs. It’s Revelations Prince Adam. It’s a terrible design.
A most excellent question. The first game that comes to mind is the 1987 arcade game Rastan Saga. Just a great representation of the genre and the time too. Comic wise, not sword & sorcery per se, but I always highly recommend Poison Elves. I would describe as if Tarantino directed Lord of the Rings.
@@GivozLegacy As would I. I remember seeing it in one of the first arcades I ever went to and being blown away by it. I was never good at it, but I tried nonetheless.
I like how you work in related commercials from the various times of the movies. My hearing is not so good; when you said "pig warriors," I heard "pig lawyers." Or maybe that's just my opinion.
I appreciate that. And glad you caught it. I always use time period appropriate commercials, whether it be things of the time or before. That way it feels like you are watching a TV show of said time. At least, that's the goal.
Let's not get confused. "It conquered the world" is not "the monster that challenged the world". Who knew Lee Van Cleef got his start in monster movies?! "It conquered the world" and "the Beast from 20000 fathoms". This makes him a better actor than Clint Eastwood, in my opinion. Too bad he didnt also act in melodramas, that would have placed him up there with Richard Carlson. Creatures, monsters, beasts, mutants. The words bring back a vague pleasantry of self-induced fear, aided and abetted by true artists. The true source of these creations i assume would be the hybridization of dinosaurs; mythological creatures; bugs 🐛 ; and sea animals. Millicent Patrick? Was she self taught? College or art school trained? Very interesting. Last thought, there is a vague, but strangely reminiscent resemblance to the tree creature from "it came from hell" to the creature from "it conquered the world".
Funny you say that, because I am a huge fan of both of those creatures. And for the longest time, I would have to double check which title went to which film. Odd too, The "Monster" That Challenged the World was multiple giant molluscs. So it should have been the Monsters That Challenged the World. Had that been the case, the confusion would have been far less. As to the talented Mrs. Patrick's background, she attended the Chouinard Art Institute which would eventually become the California Institute of the Arts. She was also one of the first female animators at Disney and worked on Fantasia. If I had to guess, I would say more so that the creature from From Hell it Came was a distant cousin of the alien from I Married a Monster from Outer Space.
"Hearts in Armor", without those two beautiful leading ladies I don't think the film would be as engrossing. Great armor not withstanding, the story seems disjointed. Like a song with some great parts that weren't capitalized on. Remake maybe? Can't help but mention the swordplay. Japanese films have great stylized swordplay. No film in this category though has ever captured the gory description of swordplay in the literature. That includes the Conan the Barbarian movie. There is no flair in the literature. The savagery of swordplay has never been captured in a live action movie. Perhaps a little in some anime. There is no parrying in S&S. No feinting. Just brutal, explosive, swinging, and berserk, powerful, body motion. If your skull or ribs or legs or arms are hit your armor will take the brunt of the force. When you hit brains are splattered, ribs are crushed and armor is caved in. Shields don't prevent your forearms from being shattered or your bones from being split. The sword is more a club than a blade, and armor not for protection as for comfort in motion and luck.
@kallianpublico7517 - Have you ever seen the fight with broadswords in Robin and Mariam? Sounds like it would be right up your alley. I just remember being impressed by how heavy and massive the swords were. For sheer elegance you can't beat Errol Flynn and Basil Rathbone in Robin Hood or Tyrone Power and Basil Rathbone in The Mark of Zorro.
A true point. The different genres of film that include a lot of swordplay do certainly have their own styles of it. I like my action in short, quick bursts. So I tend to lean, with a few expectations, towards the Sword & Sorcery style over drawn out sword fights between two individuals. A great example of that in Japanese cinema is the Zatoichi films. I do get a big kick out of it when Ichi is surrounded and within 10 seconds, his opinions are gone.

Again, thanks - I'm going to watch this a few times - you make RUclips more - more.
so - sort of like this ruclips.net/video/ZdqGOUzZ6x4/видео.html but kind of weaves the original opening into it - and is 'plucky'.

Another great review. I never would have guessed your number 1. I think i have seen Deathstalker 1, 2, and 3.

These all look like fun films. It seems that Italy was really into these Sword and Sorcery movies back then. I like all the Deathstalker movies.

I had to smile at you, saying he failed his audition for Man o War. I'm from the UK and went to see that band at The Hummingbird in Birmingham in the 90s with my friend.

So I have to ask because when I see a title that has the word obscure I automatically wonder where I can watch these movies? As far as the films themselves each and every movie on this list looks super fun. Speaking of Deathstalker I have only ever seen the first two movies. I appreciate that. And glad you caught it. I always use time period appropriate commercials, whether it be things of the time or before. That way it feels like you are watching a TV show of said time. At least, that's the goal.
Well, they do both roll in S*it , but the pig is still cleaner.
