Interesting comparison. Passenger trains should always be run at a faster speed, compared to lowly freights. I figured that the older unit would win, though.. No speed adjustments, like those between the two powered units on the Polar Express train. Two powered units won't be any faster than one, other than maybe accelerating a bit quicker. The Legacy units might just be set-up to run slower. Maybe a test of the Polar Express, while replacing the second powered unit with the non-powered unit from the older set would change the outcome. Either way, a fun video, for. As always, an excellent presentation.
Amtrak train for sure . It was probably faster because the rear train wasnt dragging and the extra two motors more weight. Science is rite . Nice video chris .
The Toy Exchange in Twin Arch Shopping ctr has a couple of Corgi 1:50 EM-One Rescue Squad for DC VFD, same squad that Mt Airy VFD uses, they also have a large collection from an estate of WW2 Franklin Mint/Corgi planes and a couple of shelf model ships
Great work as always Chris. I was also scared about those two awesome trains flying off the track as well. But I am thankful they stayed on the track and were running stable on the curves as well. I also do O Gauge with Heljan and Dapol models. Not sure if you know them but my favourite is the Class 60 diesel locomotive. If you ever heard one of those on full power. You will see why. Looking forward to the next upload from you buddy. Take care. Peter.
Good thing that Mr.Lionel was about to not get sick after speeding through those tight curves at high speed. My nickname for the polar Express model was the Frosty due gooder. Great video Chris. Great comparison between the two train sets.
Sounded like a fair race to me! I think the normal accela deserved to win since prefer that one 😁. It just goes to show newer isn't always better then old. Great video Chris!
I am not surprised by the results. It takes more amperage to run 4 motors versus 2, so that capacity was not available for additional speed. Very fun comparison. Keep up the good work.
Hey Chris! Have you ever thought doing a series about Lionel MPC & Richard Kughn era o gauge trains from 1970 to 1995 before TMCC came into the model railroad scene? I think it would attract a lot of views & gain you MORE subscribers. I can even help you on info the sets, engines & rolling stocks for those reviews. But I’ll leave that up to you.
A name for the Acela "Polar Express?" Hmm, how's "The Polar Borealis" grab everyone? "The Polar Aurora?" How about the "Northern Lights Limited?" Anyway, I was hanging on to the end of my seat waiting for one of those units to get airborne! Quite an exciting time trial! You know, I think one of my MTH 4-4-0's might go even faster than those Acelas but there's a better-than-good possibility it'd launch itself through those grain silos and out the window! A top-notch production as always Chris! Thanks for posting! bg
@@huntercoleman460 Well, we DID have an aurora borealis down here in Virginia about 20 years ago, needless to say it's a rare occurance at these latitudes. Besides that, I'm just fishing for names. Think you can do better? Go for it! d
What you said at 1:25 is way too relatable LOL. But it gets worse. Even if you pre-emptively answer a question within the first 30 seconds of a video, there will still be people in the comments who don't pay fucking attention and they ask the same question you literally just answered 😂😂😂
Nice train race, It was pretty exiting to see the TMCC Acela win also the comparison was fair. You should name the polar express Acela. “ The Polacela” or the “ Northern Lights Supersonic”
Well, Chris, after watching this video I believe you really were losing sleep over this question, lol! The Amtrak ACELA is actually my favorite, but I was surprised like you to see with my own eyes that the Legacy (Polar Express) ACELA was slower. You just never know. "Why are we doing this again?" 🤣 Fun video, Chris! Bill B.
Great vlog, as always. For this contest it appears to me the Polar Express is at a disadvantage right out of the gate because of the two engine setup. Two engines using the same 20 volts would seem to increase your pulling power but slow the train down a bit. Can the trains be run without the rear engine? That would be a better contest for the power of the engines. It seems that with both complete trains, some handicaping would be in order. Even NASCAR adds weights to the cars to make sure each car weights the same, or as close as they can get to the same weight. Just a thought.
Interesting experiment, the one thing that could hamper the polar express could be that one power car might work better than the other one causing it to either drag or push the other which might explain the 3 second gap between the train set as well as a difference in weight of the train all together
Don't think it's to do with splitting the current as it's an AC circuit as opposed to DC what I was suggesting is it might be that one power car might run better than the other, plus the different trainsets might have a different total weight
Rbp I love u videos it makes me feel happy when I go through hard times but it also pumps me up for when I want to build my train layout(I’m 13) also it just triggers me to see that THERS NO WIREING ON THE SINGLES OR THAT SWING
G'day mate Love the train race and nice trains too , I might have to get me the 2005 Amtrak Acela one in H O . Hey Chris would like to know or maybe you can do a vid on it and show us all what train in your train conlection can pull the most wagons and how many wagons how long will the train be , steam locomotive or a diesel electric locomotive mmm i wonder
Dual motors and special features on a train sap the power by small amounts, usually unnoticed. But when you run two trains on a single track, they'll always run slower than the lone train, especially with more operating features. I admire your bravery in this stunt! If it makes you feel any better though; The Polar Acella was probably safe to run at max speed because the second unit would help her stay on track.
You’re a brave man… I’d hazard a guess it came down to the dual locos.. I do not know this for sure, but I suspect odyssey works in both locos to adjust each locos speed according to the load on each. You’ve got many cars connected in between, and I can tell you from experience that the speed sync between the two locos differs to varying degrees even without them connected. In summary, I’m sure very minor speed adjustments were being automatically made to each unit during that test (and indeed anytime the consist is run). Chris, I’m curious if you’ve had any speed sync or acceleration/deceleration variances between the polar Acela locos? Have you ever tested this? If so, we should talk.
Chris, I have a 2005 Acela set, still in its original factory shipping carton, never opened. I just do not have the space to provide for it to run. So, if you have a friend who wants one so he can race yours....
So... dumb question. Are the two sets compatible with each other? As in could you couple all the cars together and get a double-length mismatched-paint Acela?
Hope those trucks dont crumble as they are paired to do over time. Those tmcc acelas are impossible to get parts for. Thats why I got the newer version and love it. Thses are hard to part with as you state. I always wanted one when I first saw them on a tmbooks video. Glad to finnaly get one. The stations sounds dinner is the best. Best line in a model train ever "do you want fries with that"😅.
It is impressive how 0-96 holds them down well in highball speed. I have 2 0-72 loops but it makes me anxious to death when I go past speed step 140. There's only an inch or 2 on the perimeter of the board, one slip up and that's going to be a couple electric bills to fix.
These train sets were a lot closer than I expected them to be after watching them both run. The Acela for. 2005 seemed considerably faster. I guessed, based on the visual comparison, that the Polar Express train was going to come in at over a minute.
Hummmmmm Looked ( to me) as if the scent train was just as fast if not faster until around the end, looked as if something made it run slower. But it was fun watching your comments....LOL
