98% of Nigeria society frowned upon guys with ear rings, dreadlocks, tattoos, piercing as it's considered irresponsible from government to religious bodies and tradition.
Mostly nowadays, male artists like musicians, footballers put it on as fashion but 98% see's it negatively.
Guy's with piercing, ear rings and dreadlocks are considered bad boys in the society here.

When i was 22, i had a second piercing on my earlobe. The day my mom saw it, she gave me a knock on my head😪 and called a family meeting on my behalf. My mom literally asked my aunties to ask me which prostitution gang i have joined 😂😂. Though few parents are open-minded now cus of civilisation (but i will say like 5% of the Nigerian parents are open-minded while the other 95% are still strict), most Nigerian parents will never agree to this cus of the narrative the media pushed to them in the 80's and 90's’, about how gangs are the ones that wear earrings and draw tattoos. So for those of us whose parents are not open-minded, what we do is either get the tattoo or piercing when we are far from home, but the minute u are visiting home, you take off the earrings for guys n for the ladies, you take off any other piercings, n stick to the only piercing your parents gave you. Then, for tattoos, we wear long sleeves to cover them.

There is no confusion. Girls pierce their ears, not guys.
Not a think for the guys.
Please remember, American reality and popular culture in Urban areas are not for everyone, even in the US.
Just go to some Muslim country and see if they walk around with piercings

Traditionally, many Kenyan tribes, such as the Kikuyu, Maasai, and Samburu, practiced ear piercing as a rite of passage for both men and women. However, some older Africans may frown upon ear piercing among men today due to its association with rebellious behavior and negative stereotypes influenced by pop culture.

Traditionally, piercing is viewed as a feminine practice. Males are not expected to engage in it. Going against this societal belief is considered outlandish. Cross-dressing is viewed in the same way in some societies.

Traditionally piercing of the ear or other part of the body was morally acceptable pre colonialism, majority of African tribes had piercings and other form of body mutilation as a form of family or cultural identification, social status and so on. The piercing of ones ear as a male child became an issue solely based on the fact that the Europeans who happened to colonise the country doesn't necessarily do that which became a standard, owing that people took them(The colonisers) as the representation of success and how success should look like at the time. Religion further appropriated it as been evil or sinful. Say colonialism made it unacceptable to those closest to that era which are our parents or grandparents, though the sentiment still holds strong among many youths today. most has no issue with it right now but I feel they would when they themselve become parents.
In Nigeria, piercing is strictly meant for the female gender. Any man or boy who decides to pierce their ears are said to be either leaning towards femininity, badly behaved or possessed.

just like you said. Growing up in a Xhosa household in SA, the older men in my family would make sure to remind the youngins that piercingings made them feminine. In High School (I was there in 2017) there was a boy in my class who got an ear piercing and they started calling him "makazi" which is Xhosa for 'aunty" .. its hardly like anymore
    tho

It’s not even the masculine feminine thing. Piercings and earrings, even tattoos was at some point for outkasts or thugs and THEN it became cool. We saw that first in music videos with gangsta and a lot of girls…our parents watched those music videos too so….a certain look can make your elders to think that you became a thug too.
But with time they understood that many fashion trends came from OutKast and even thug. It’s just how it is😂.
If you have to compare our parents in Africa feels and think like your grand parents in the US.

It's generally seen as feminine on males, especially both sides. They associate those things wuth females.
Same as a man getting box braids with extensions. It's possible to do but it's associated with a different gender.
