As a white teacher who started off as a substitute teacher in a few inner city schools, this skit is hilarious to me on a personal level. Trying to take attendance and pronounce each name correctly would have been its own great skit! More often than not I got the pronunciation right but there were a few times I was left thinking "Okay, not sure how that letter combination produced that sound but we'll move on!"
some of those names can be ridiculous... it's understandable how you'd be confused
I can't tell you how many kids when I was a youth worker got mad at me because I didn't know how to spell their names. I was like look, come on, we both know there's no standardized spelled of De'quaveon, you're gonna have to throw me a bone.
Been using the phrase "Insubordinate & churlish!" for years and I never get tired of it. 😉🤣

The joke is that the black teacher is unfamiliar with white names, because he has no experience with white students. So he basically pronounces their names phonetically.
The point they are showing is how Black people(Inner City) spell and pronounce names differently at the end they show the one Black kid in the class answered to Timothy(Tim-mo-thee)immediately no problem lol

The point of the sketch is the way a white teacher mispronounces blk students names when they are the substitute for a predominantly black school. Key and Peele did the skit the opposite way by having a blk teacher mispronounce students at a predominantly white school.

I had a teacher in middle school that did the same way. We all started calling each other the names how he pronounced it.
Lol the substitute teacher is used to the hard to pronounce “Inner City” names. Now he’s having trouble pronouncing the very plain, basic “white” names 😂

Coming from a long line of women with impossible to pronounce names (Vereleta, edgel, etc); they wanted to spare me the headache, so gave me the most boring name ever.
My mom usually tells people “just call me deedee”, cause no amount of correcting people helps them get it right. I tell people “just call her velveeta, she’ll know it’s her”

It's crazy how many people don't understand what they are doing. Which is to play off the names with unusual pronunciations in the black community. Nothing wrong with that at all, but it's crazy to not acknowledge that many of them are hard to spell and pronounce. They did the same thing in their East/West football rosters skits. Back to this skit, the joke is that the teacher taught in the inner city for 20 yrs, hence he is used to those names. That is why he pronounces "normal" names this way. Of course the humor is a bit on the edge in these times, but it's funny and we are losing this kind of humor to the humorless PC crowd.
