I found the S method (first one) flows better. We used to race on the Marine Corps Obstacle Course and I could normally make up big time doing it that way. The second one is harder to keep the rope on your foot as you pull up. This guy made it look easy.
I did J hook when I was in basic. Discovered the wrap around later and never looked back. Rope feels way more secure to me. Bottom line is find a technique you’re comfortable with and practice until it’s second nature and either will work.
I have to watch RUclips to learn how to climb the rope since when i was at basic training they didnt teach us anything much!!, like wtf?!. That is all I had to do?!, look how simple it is!, i couldve climbed the rope but i couldn't at basic training, like I look like an idiot for not doing something simple. I couldve done it but i just didnt know the technique fully. But obviously i didnt finish basic but i will be back in the army hopefully soon and when i do, i know what to do on how to climb the rope.

I personally find the j hook to be easier. I cannot get the rope to cooperate doing the first method
J hook is for sure, especially when you are fatigued , it comes handy.
