Copper pipe is a hard one. You can have a hunt online but pretty much any metal tubing should work as long as you insulate yourself from the heat. Old set of bars and an oven mit???

I bought this for my friend for his birthday as we just moved into a new house and he finally has room for a workshop. The bench was very easy to set up ruclips.net/user/postUgkxyFZUPFEey-PuqsPMxqaykBhgA1LWxFHh They center support is a little difficult to snap in and out of place at first but at least then we know the bench is secure. It was a pleasant surprise when we saw it came with clamps. I apparently missed that in the description. My friend loves the versatility of the bench. Great starter bench for his workshop and easily transportable all over our property. I wish the bench was a little taller but the other features of the bench more than make up for that.
I just spent my Friday night watching you build a tool box. It was worth it.
🙃
That Halfords sticker peel....damn that was satisfying
Had to mute the tunes to appreciate the peel 🤤
Amen to that!
Yes! Can we have a “Ben cleanly peels stickers off of things” spin-off series.
That was definitely the moneyshot.
I work in aviation and all of our tool boxes are required to have foam cut outs. I think more MTBers should do this!
25 years ago, when I was a machine operator in a factory, I did this with regular craft foam. There wasn't any purpose-built fancy foam at the time. It was the best idea ever. I absolutely loved being able to open a drawer and instantly see everything I needed.
Looks great! You know you're Scottish when you make a custom toolbox but leave the mud/rust on the tools ;)
Haha, they still work.... kinda 😂
I love the special outing just to show us the other guys’ toolbox!
Outstanding results! Heated copper tubing for finger access to grab tools easily was a golden tip. Thanks!
I just bought a MTB it’s only a Bianchi Kuma but I’m old and be good for getting to photography DSLR/Drone locations locally. Great channel keep up the great work Ben.
Man, I've wanted to do this but I've always been intimidated! No way I'd be able to cut straight or not have the damn marker show up on the foam. Good job just diving in and getting it done!
Get on it Brian! I didn't really know what I was doing and it turned out semi decent.
We have a lot of custom toolboxes from Snap-on in our shop. We use a router attachment on a Dremel when our foam needs replacing. Makes short work and gives great results!
You can always use masking tape so the lines you mark it won’t show up on the foam!
You made me smile, knowing you enjoyed your project. And I learned about Kaizen foam. Thanks
Awesome Ben! Thats some serious craftsmanship right there!
Ten out of ten. Seeing you peel of the Halfords sticker was oddly satisifing.
Loving that Ben, and I’d be just as excited lol
Enjoyed the T-shirt choices immensely! Reckon I need to get on the Kaizen project for next year!
Love how you just threw in some very entertaining and funny bits! What a great video, and in the way of just spreading the general idea i got inspired by it as well
Loved that you didn't get into the fine details, just a allround amazing video!
amazing, love it
I have zero interest in mountain bikes, but i love the video and the editing. top notch! and the tool box turned out great
Dude, that was so awesome!!!
I’ve used this foam plenty.
Not as easy as it looks here.
Bravo!
Well done! I like using 1/4 and 3/8 drive (hex and torx) bit sockets and a short ratchet. It's more comfortable and gives a better feel for torque than Allen wrenches (L and Y-3 way shaped). Professional bike mechanic since 1989.
OH man! Haha...you got me laughing so hard when you lit the torch. Great humor! lol
Very nice. I thought I had a nice setup. I have 2 drawers in a big rolling toolbox just for my bike tools and I have rubber mats down and the tools setting side by side and this way more cool. Great video 👍👍🍻
Nicely done. I’ve got the same three drawer tool box, but mine looks like your old box. Three times the tools that should be able to fit. I gotta say that little edit of you peeling off the label, and the sound it made was both exciting and satisfying. I would have fu*ked that up for sure, whilst ripping off the last centimeter of sticker. 😂
I'm just in this exact process, waiting for the foam to be delivered. Great vid, informative and very helpful. I don't think I'll be melting finger grips though, will use a 2pence to outline the cut.
Using a system like this to organize your stuff is great indeed. Keeps things organized and you’ll notice when things are forgotten/lost.
For more savage applications like heavy industrial work (like I used to do) I’d go for the ABS or PP inlays we used to have. Cleans easy contrary to this. But its noisier.
For light duty or cleaner applications I’d go for foam as well.
So satisfying
Lol. So satisfying. Especially peeling off that sticker.
Ben, cool project. In my toolbox it takes me longer to fish out the tools as it does to use them on my bike... I can fully understand why you did this!
9:19 Ben's-ASMR-channel confirmed coming to you soon!
I’ve watched a bunch of Kaizen foam videos and without a doubt your finger pulls are the nicest I’ve seen anywhere. I wonder how they would turn out on the foam that has a different interior color. I have some coming - I will have to give it a try.
This was satisfying to watch.
Awesome man! Love it..🤙
Wow this is amazing, I’ve just bought this same box it was on offer for 25 pound, it’s usually 39 I think it said, but I’m definitely gonna have to do this with it thanks for the tips 👍
I'm so happy to find your chanel!
Great vibe!
Nice video Ben. Tools you may need - chain whip, shifter spanner, Valve core remover, junior hacksaw.
Don’t judge me but, I use the bb tool over the 11 tooth cog as a chain whip, I use pliers for valve core and a hacksaw is a great idea! It can fit in the roof of the lid!
@@BenCathro I like the ingenuity of the BB spanner being used on the cassette. One final tool suggestion - a torque wrench. Just think how satisfying it will be to know everything is tightened down to just the right click
Thank you! I try!
most satisfying part when you pealed of the sticker and no glue left on the box ;)) great video
this is cool think i will do my own version just moved into a new flat and a big cupboard is my bike cave so need something like this
Yeah man, go for it. Not too difficult and really organised.
Immensely satisfying ...oh yes..I am defo doing this
This makes me happy
Nice, love it.
Great edit man, a lot of humour
I should do something like this to my tool box. I used to have a similar box, but found it was annoying to need to lift the lid to open the drawers. So I bought and modified a mechanics 3 drawer "mid" box, adding an MDF top and side handles. There's a barrel lock for the drawers and the simple top means I can stack stuff on top of the box and still access the tools. The big downside of this box is it's flipping heavy. What I'm considering next for my van tools is some sort of tool roll that can be hung up when needed.
Makes a list of tools you need for the job.. first tool you used wasn’t on the list👀
Spirit level😂 sick video will defo be giving this a go👌🏻
Haha, that was my ruler... felt like it might be excessive to add that in 😂. Screw it. I’m adding it 👍
Brilliant vid dude....my next little project confirmed
OCD overload 👏👏👏👏love it 👍
I wouldn't advise heating your sockets as it softens the matal making them more likely to round off or break.
That so cool thanks ben from South Africa
Great work 😍
New favourite youtube channel!
really love the vids man they are litt
Cheers boss 👊
The ultimate Satisfaction video and the sticker peel got me too excited
Just got the craftsman 3 drawer box with tools. I'm going to put handles on the sides. Tough because its double walled with 1/2" gap and not a lot of space between the rails inside. I took a set of heavy handles off a Harbor Freight 26" US General to;p box. Nice handles. The Craftsman box is nice for the money, the set of tools with it is probably a $80 set at best. Its got all 3 size drives, but not to many 12pt 1/2 sockets and tiny wrenches. Other than that, the box allows tons of room to add tools.
I watched you remove that sticker 4 times hugely satisfying 😂
Genius!
In the old days, this was done by carving out wooden inserts. Foam is way easier. ^_^ One of the advantages of this system is that after using your tools, you can do a quick check to make sure you have them all accounted for. That way you don't leave e a tool behind after off-roading.
Mint video
Derailleur alignment gauge 👌🏼
You know you still have to open the top lid to get into the drawers right?
Love a good DIY! :D
Nice work. I would suggest polishing the metal tools with Autosol to remove rust and prevent more oxydation. They will shine like new.
I reckon start the foam cutting with the bottom (least-used) drawer - that way the worst one, i.e. your first try, is less visible and the top (most-used) will be lurvely because you've honed your new-found skills by then.
Thats a cracking idea pal
Sharpen up the inside of one end on that copper pipe with just a knife so you're left with a sharp edge and you can cut that foam away to exactly the same shape with no burning required in a fraction of the time.
Good job !
Out of interest, hows the toolbox working out? Still going strong?
If so I’m going to put a similar one together 👍🏼
Hot knife foam cutters work great for this type of project and they are easy to work with and fast and best of all they are not expensive.
How fucken chuffed you are at this makes me smile
Hahaha, Great to see you make an appearance in today’s Red Bull Fast Life series!
Famous now eh! 😊
The one sheet of Kaizen foam was enough btw to do the whole box?
he is so happy!
Nice I'm happy for you
Nice Video, But didn't see a chain whip? did I miss it? you got the cassette tool, adjustable, but not chain whip?
good work
Trick missed, the label maker should have had a label its self. Great vid as ever!
winter is so boring without biking, well done!! But what for ist that carpenter hammer, lol?
Smashing things I don't want to dent. Knocking forks out headtube, smacking crank axle out, twatting on a stubborn set of deathgrips. One of those things I never bought but just came into my possession and I found lots of uses for it.
Ben I bought the tool box aswell before I seen this video and it annoys me how I can’t keep the top closed and the drawers are locked and i seem that you removed the red thing , how do I do that
Realy Cool🤙🔥🔥
Ben just ordered mine so something to do while not riding
Nice, good luck with the process 👌
You make a great video!
1000° pipe Vs foam
Would have been a better video title eh. Millions of views I could have had. Appreciate the effort for finding the "°" symbol 👌too.
my problem is I got way too many tools to have in one box, I got a Park tool blue box, but I always wanted to do Kaizen Foam but never did, but my tool collection increased a lot, still not sure how I want to sort my tools,I think I should do several layers, so I can lift it, out, i saw pro mechanics had it like that, but I see some of them got huge pelican cases, double the size of mine.
I dont have room for another box, but I wish I had a proper bench, I use a kitchen table. I think I should get bench drawers, or something similar, to lay the big tools in. like saw, hanger tool, and so on.
Great tool box? Also, where do you get your nails done?
Brilliant, how do you get Cathro vision stickers?
Patreon donators get them 😉
Looks great and can't beat having an organised tool box. Only thing is sockets on the side so you can see the sizes but still great box mate.
Ooooh, good one! Might fire up the label maker and see if they’ll stick.
Great idea.Might aswell make use of the present.😂
Is the foam stuck down to the draws?
The best part was watching you peel the sticker off...
Nice job
Mint vid. Could you do a tour of your camper 4 us
Just finished a building big work bench with tool storage. Went with drawers like this for the bike tools but none slip matting isnt up to te weight of the tools. This may be the answer....
You complained about not being able to access your tools when it’s in your van with the plastic box but this new box also requires the top to be open in order to use the drawers. Did you modify the van to fix that?
0:42 that's an Alliance Healthcare tote! I work for them!
And again an awesome Video ...where can i get this awesome #cathrovision sticker??
Will you be next year at The wc in Leogang??
Patreon donators only 😉
I reckon a nice Thor brand hammer with replaceable faces would be a great addition, one soft face and one hard face, then you could cut down on having the two hammers currently and free up some more space.
BETA sliding t-handle allen keys
oh oh flush cut side cutters so no nasty wee sharp bits on zip ties
And no toolbox is complete without a homemade tool for a specific job, something like a nipple and shortened sharpened spoke for poking things.
I really need to go sort my toolbox out, this was a great video
I've wanted that a long time, but not only is it pricey, I have to order it abroad as well. If I could just pick it up at a local shop, I'd be there in a jiffy, but things like this are just not normal to find in my country. Then I have to pay for shipping, and then 25% VAT and in these days I even have to pay extra toll on top of it all, just because...
Anyhow, so far I went for an economical solution I could pick up from a local shop nearby, and those foam mats are made up of lots and lots of tiny sliced cubes you can just rip out to form the shape of the according tool you want to place at that spot. I'll see if this solution will hold up or not, and if it just doesn't last I'll simply bite the bullet.
That's Super Nice! I presume #GMBN are featuring this in hacks and bodges
Tip: heat up all of your metal items and melt it into the foam. It worked great for me !
How long did this take you to do?
hi there... long shot but hope you can reply. Hows this toolbox holding up? should i buy it?
Still going strong! 💪
Thanks for beeing Just you and mit using the best Tools Out there but some more value and generic stuff , makese feel better buying normal (birzman) Tools 😂👍👍
