  • Before buying an RV it's always best to take a factory tour. This is our experience of the Tiffin Rv facility in Redbay, Alabama.

    Hello, not trying to be snarky at all but wanted to share a couple things as someone who’s been not only in manufacturing but in productions exactly like this. 1) the machine you saw “holding down” the tile floor as is dried was not holding it down. The tiles steady dried and that machine is a suction lift. They lay the tile as the whole unit then use the suction lift to place it. Yes it was holding It there while it was secured but not to dry. 2) The 3/4” floor board you didn’t like was not the full floor substructure. It is multiple layers one of which was attached already to the dried tile floor assembly that later Is attached. If it were only the one 3/4” board it would twist and sag and droop.
    Anyway I thought your video was great and thorough but just out of context on a few full production process portions that incorrectly undermined the intended quality. This is exactly why some manufacturers don’t allow close up and full access reviews… context.

    Glenn, I agree with you completely about all the trash everywhere. My wife and I did the Entegra, Newmar and Tiffin tours all in one week back in 2015. The things that really stuck with us from the Tiffin tour was the amount of trash everywhere and the assembly line feel. Obviously all RVs are built on some sort of assembly line, but the Tiffin factory reminded us of an automotive assembly line in a UAW plant. Maybe some of that was the size of the operation. In any case, we came away from the Tiffin tour feeling that a push for more quantity usually translates to problems with quality. Tiffin has some nice products with nice features at very competitive prices, but we decided we would not feel comfortable buying a coach manufactured in their facility. Maybe I am too old fashioned, but if you can't keep your workspace clean then I question the attention to detail you are putting into your products. Thanks for the video, it was interesting to see that everything seems to be in the same state it was three years ago.

    Great video Glenn, We just came back for the Newmar plant tour in Nappanee IN. Their operations were very clean and safety minded, With Newmar, they will only build 11 coaches a day regardless of demand. Tiffin is well over that number. I was very surprised by all the trash on the floor. It's not if but when OSHA will be making a visit. How much trash is left in the coach for the new owner to clean up? This is one of the many reasons we are going with Newmar for our new coach. Thanks for the video!

Sounds to me some people just like other products more and are looking for any cotton picking reason to bash Tiffin.

    Nice video Glenn. One must ask with all that debris in the isles, all around the floor there must be a hazards in the workplace. Do they ask a waiver be signed for possibly injury? The demand seems overwhelming at all RV manufacturers today. The supply seems to not have any OSHA occupational standards in place. Money rules. Oh I really enjoyed the Amish CNC machines. LOL

    If you look at the amount of rubbish around, with you wondering if they ever clean up? Of course if they didn't within a couple of days you would not be able to walk around. I'm sure they clean every day after they close. Perhaps the reason other motorhome manufactures don't want you seeing the whole process. Good coach, quiet and well insulated. Glad we bought a Tiffin.

    Did you tour the Service center or the campground at Tiffin ?
    If the dealer can't fix it you can take it back to the tiffin plant and they will fix it.
    Also Bob Tiffin answered the phone when My friend called to get a roof repaired that Lazy Days Tampa couldn't repair after 4 attempts. Bob said bring it right over.
    That is why my next coach will be a Tiffin.

    Most manufacturing tours limit where visitors can go because of liability concerns. Tiffin has a great customer service reputation. My choice is Newmar. They have both batt and foam board insulation in their walls. I believe their floors are 1.5" thick. Newmar's price does run about a 30% higher, but they only build 8-10 units a day. You do get what you pay for.

  • @TWBrit65
    @TWBrit65 5 лет назад

    Insulation.... with polystyrene it's all down to the type and rating etc and reduces (like closed-cell foam) the likelihood of condensation etc. For the most part, both the newer poly and foam blocks are complete cut above fibre based materials. But... they all have their pros and cons. Another pro is their sound proofing qualities.

  • @cderekgowilken9251
    @cderekgowilken9251 4 года назад

    Just seeing this video a year after posting. Not quite certain your reasoning for fiber insulation over foam. Always told that fiber could 'settle' even in a home. I would think in a coach, chances of that happening would increase greatly. As well, my thoughts to "R"-value of styrofoam over fiber would be greater, or am I incorrect? I just know I'd give anything to pull off interior aluminum panels from my 30 year old Airstream motorhome and have closed-cell foam sprayed in, or even ceramic insulation. But I don't want to remove complete interior for such a project.
    Overall, a great video of the Tiffin Production plant. And yes, I can see the concerns for the waste. I worked in a production environment (construction, and processing) and NOTHING was allowed on the floors at ANY TIME! We never knew when an OSHA Inspector may show. Surprised that Tiffin doesn't have the same concern. OSHA Fines are nothing to sneeze at. Same for PPE for employees.

    There is a reason companies don't allow video taping and, although I can't speak for Entegra, Newmar has proprietary methods and equipment that they protect. So it isn't a matter of only allowing you to see what they want you to see it is a matter of allowing you to see all they can safely. You see, many states have safety laws which apparently does not include Alabama, because I saw a dozen or more safety violations in your factory tour. I will say, (I am biased because I have a Newmar Dutch Star) that the Newmar factory was spotless. Another complaint that you had was about Amish craftsmanship or the lack thereof. Although it is misleading to make people think that the RVs from Indiana are hand crafted by Amish artisans, it is, however, true that they employ a large number of Amish who are well know for a strong work ethic. I think Red Branch would brag the same way if there were any Amish in Alabama ...but there aren't. Or certainly not in any great numbers. Tiffin makes a fine RV but after seeing the video, I would have to wonder does the slovenliness of the shop reflect the overall nature of their work. Glad I bought a Newmar.

    The dirty cluttered work areas are a reflection of management attitude. It's unsafe and unhealthy. Visit an automobile factory... You can usually eat off the floor it's so clean. That dirt gets into sensitive electronics making them fail early. Bottom line: you are far more productive when you're organized. There should be a protocol for scrap handling at the point of use. Otherwise you're handling it twice, and that adds to the cost. These people would need HOURS at shift end to do a proper cleanup- again adding to cost. A dirty shop doesn't mean you're more productive; it just shows disorganization and lack of professionalism.

    Factories don’t have to be that messy and unsafe. Go visit a Toyota facility if you happen to be near one. Night and day from this. Unfortunately, most US manufacturers still try and fly by the seat of their pants. Part of the reason corporations are moving facilities out of the country.
    Also, can I ask you what types of PPE you were required to wear on the tour? It seems incredibly irresponsible to have people in the facility without safety toe shoes and safety glasses. The guys at 7:47 should have had hard hats on as well.

    This guy is complaining about how dirty the warehouse is . HELLOOOOOOOOO it’s a warehouse it’s part of production . Every company that produces anything has a warehouse just as messy . Now u see why integra doesn’t want filming because of petty complaints like the one you just made

      Jerry Stotts u can’t compare a toyota plant where there is an assembly line to a place where motorcoaches are built . These are rolling homes . Go to a site where a house is being built and u will see the same amount of rubish
