This Real VTOL Concept Was So Bad They Gave Up... SO I MADE ONE!

  • Welcome to another episode of Trailmakers! Today I am attempting to recreate a failed VTOL concept known as the Grumman G-674 Nutcracker. It was a plane that had a folding fuselage allowing the tail to fold down 90 degrees from the cockpit, along with the engines. It was then intended to be able to hover in the position to vertically take off and land. Even at face value, it's questionable how good of an idea this was, but it's even worse than I had imagined.

    About Trailmakers:
In the toughest motoring expedition in the universe, you and your friends will build your own vehicles to cross a dangerous wasteland. Explore, crash horribly, use your wits to build a better rig, and get as far as you can with whatever spare parts you find on your way.
    Welcome to the Ultimate Expedition!
Journey over grueling mountains, hazardous swamps, and bone-dry deserts on a distant world far from civilization - it is just you, your fellow adventurers and the amazing, jet-powered hover-buggy you built yourself. Explore, crash your vehicle, build a better one, and get as far as you can with whatever spare parts you find along your way.
Trailmakers is about building very awesome vehicles and machines, but you don’t need an engineering degree to get started. The intuitive builder will get you going in no time. Everything you build is made from physical building blocks. Each block has unique features like shape, weight and functionality. They can be broken off, refitted and used to build something new. Individually the blocks are fairly simple, but combined the possibilities are endless.
Expedition Mode is the challenging campaign mode of Trailmakers. You are competing in an off-world rally expedition with only a few building blocks to get you started. You must build, tinker with and rebuild your machine to progress. Journey through a big world, overcome deep gorges, angry wildlife and dangerous weather to progress and find new parts that will juice up your machine. The world in Expedition Mode will test your survival skills and ingenuity.
Sandbox Mode is where you want to head for an unrestricted, sandbox, vehicle-building experience. Here you can build anything you can dream of, and play around with it in the world of Trailmakers. It is a great place to test out crazy machines, and experiment with the physics engine. With tons of different blocks, hinges, thrusters and interactive vehicle parts - the skybox is the limit.
Trailmakers is even more fun if you play it with other people. Build cool vehicles and compete in mini-game modes with your friends or other Trailmakers online. Build a helicopter, send it to your friend, and shoot them out of the sky. Put two seats on a tank, and let your friend control the turret. As we get further in Early Access development Expedition Mode will also be adapted to multiplayer.

actually if looked at from the aircraft carrier view it makes perfect sense as you could land launch these off the sides of ships not just carriers. could also hug buildings most ships and buildings could be adapted by adding 3 small platforms specifically for the lander gear instead of having full Heli pads installed i can see the money saving aspect if it hat actually flown and worked.

18:05 Trailmakers does that with positive hinge output. If you just rotate hinges and use negative (aka read arrows) output, you would get constant speed in both directions. Im actually suprised You didn't know that but i guess you dont build that much.
Idk if its a glitch or feature but you can actually use this for complicated stuff like folding gears or something.... Also im pretty positive, its the reason why TM steering is TRASH.

ok i kinda get the idea of this , its not exactly ment to land on the ground its a navy plane its ment tohang on the edge of aircraft carriers , cause on aircraft carriers tolaunch jets they use a slingshot type mechanism , aswell as to stop planes they use a wire catch mechanism .

Wow impressive. I honestly was already starting to give up on this being viable after seeing the model version.
This is very interesting that you were able to get this to react so stably as well as the control method they chose.
Personally I feel like with some central venting ports facing forwards and backwards from a turbine, this could be somewhat viable for a drone with current technology and calculation speed.
However idk about on a boat, any sort of strong gusts to contend with and this wouldn't be able to launch or land / dock. VTOL would present way too unstable a surface for any sort of flight.
Easy way to test or show an example of this would be to take it into the high seas, and put it in Vtol, you don't even need to try any manoeuvres, it's just going to flip all over the place probably.
Love this sort of technical engineering from the past series of videos and creations.

Erm... the Airbus ACH175, an up to 12-passenger commercial/corporate helicopter would like a word. And if that doesn't tickle your fancy, what about the Mil V-12, a Soviet passenger airliner helicopter that seated up to 196 passengers and a flight crew of 6? It never entered commercial service, but they did build two of them and they really did fly!

See now _this_ is a true engineering fail! That last one with the flappy umbrella, one, had the possibility of working, two, would've done something not done before and in a way there was nothing better for at the time, and three, was made by a guy who presumably didn't know any better.
To see something this ridiculous with a name like "Grumman" attached to it? Pricelessly hilarious.
Look at the take-off platform... if you have that kind of infrastructure, complicated and with hydraulics and pivots it looks like... just build a damn runway!
I suppose as an auxiliary fighter launcher it's not the _most_ ridiculous idea, but they just wound up using rocket catapults for that in WWII.
As for how it's meant to land? Uh... if this was designed for the purpose I think it was, it just _wasn't_ meant to land. xD
It'd defend its cargo ship then splash down and the pilot would be fished out of the water.
Edit: That... was a _landing pad!?_ Oh. Oh mai...
And this was in 1976!? Bruh, even for black budget R&D shenanigans this was whack! I thought maybe 1943!

To be honest, Scrapman? You would have made a _great_ engineer. Engineering is mostly about how you think about things, not what you know. Memorizing all the equations is for school. Working engineers just look it up most of the time. You don't have to know all the things off the top of your head, but rather _what_ things to look up, and the context to understand and apply them.
Obviously you think much more clearly about these kinds of things than many real engineers did! And yes, you're from the future from their perspective, but they were somewhere between half a century and a century into having the knowledge you're using to immediately identify that this is an absurd idea that could never work. They have no excuses. xD

    Scrapman, I dare you...
    To make a Kugelpanzer.
Also known as, the German Ball Tank
ALSO HAVE yOU HEARD OF THE HOLY ROLLER?!
its a true wonder of Canadian engineering :)
It served in countless engagments in the second world war!
At one point of time, it was even outfitted as a bridge layer and a mine sweeper!
Its the only tank of the First Hussars (from London, Ontario) to have survived!
If you're interested in touching a true gold mine for grabbing new viewers then you should see if it'd tickle your interests!
It's quite the legend where I'm from, I reckon that Draegast knows a fair bit about it too, given how I lived in the same town as him for a while (London, Ontario)
The City of London is hoping to get it field worthy again, but its extremely expensive and the fact one of the tracks was rebuilt using parts from a newer model of tank means that even if it does run, it'll never be quite as elegant as it once was!
Lastly, in case you ever feel like you don't get much reach past the USA, here in the Windsor essexs, you're extremely popular :D
I started a club at my school, dedicated to you :)
    it is #blessed
I'm honored to be subscribed to you!
    Sincerely,
    some rando on the internet

You know flight is just the play between center of mass direction of thrust amount of thrust and drag ...
    THIS THING IS INFURIATING

Whew, they sure did have some wacky ideas of how to achieve VTOL flight. Sadly being a VTOL requires sacrificing everything that makes a plane stable in flight, as well as complex issues with balance, etc, and it just makes for a worse aircraft for accomplishing MISSION.

Failed war creations are cool and all, but it would be really cool for you to try to build the arctic snow cruiser, a HUGE truck that was made to... Well... Cruise trough the arctic and it have a mini bi-plane to aid in recon or help stranded expeditioners, if failed for so many reason, it was abandoned somewhere for so long, it got covered in snow and NOBODY KNOWS WHERE IT ENDED UP, so that's a pretty good title too: "This arctic snow cruiser was so flawed, it got abandoned and nobody know where it ended up"

Why? Really, why does this… why… I have no words. This is the most mesmerizing terrible design I’ve ever seen. Could people seriously not comprehend the concept of aiming some jet engines vertically? Like seriously, it’s ridiculous that it took until the Hawker Sidley Harrier for people to think of vertical thrusters rather than vertical airplanes.

I feel like Trailmakers should be a mandatory first pass prototype for anybody trying to make ridiculous new mechanical inventions. I guess it's fair they didn't have Trailmakers decades ago...

So I infer they didn't have a decent understanding of gravity back then...
And VTOL is in some models of jets, I decided to look up "VTOL aircraft" and a few jet models came up, I found it interesting

day 151 or 152 of asking scrapman to start a Survival series amphibious tank/basically any transportation and floating base/barge (or under water.) But you need mods... it's a requirement to breathe underwater, if you want an underwater base/transportation. And yes i am talking about the underwater fan moonbo reviewed that basically makes water spaces air spaces... if that makes any sense.) (and if you wanted to move the barge/boat/floating base you are able to make thrusters/glitches/mods to do it or by lift or actual push

If you're going to talk about why vertical take off and landing is important, you should also mention why helicopters which are great at VTOL don't meet requirements...

I don't know about anyone else, but I was having trouble finding this video. I thought you didn't upload a video. When I saw the thumbnail for this I thought it was the other VTOL video you did. It looks somewhat similar at a glance.
