daniel hernandez I'm not one to argue about sub-genre labels, but I really don't see how (or better yet, hear how) Deftones were ever nu metal. Nu metal is mixing metal and "pop-ish" elements, Deftones mixed metal with some experimental sounds (to my ears at least) which would be alternative, like you said. If anything they were just metal when they were first coming up, White Pony was the big start of the alternative stuff (although they did have some of that type of stuff on their other albums also). Apparently you're not alone in your opinion, many people are saying that from what I can see and I'm thinking it might just be the fact that when Deftones were really popular nu metal itself was just getting really popular also, so maybe that's coloring everyone's thoughts on the matter. But, as a deathmetal fan, I have to say I still love me some Deftones!
