Comedy shows from the 70's were the best!!!! Love this show!!!!!
One of the best characters in sitcom history. Perfectly delivered. Naturally quit witted, refreshingly classy and idealistic, yet balanced with a NY city gal bluntness and no nonsense attitude.
Rest in peace, Mrs. Harper. We will always love you for the joy you brought to so many.
I am like mesmerized by the first 10 seconds of this TV Theme song. Just watching it over and over and over again. Rhoda is hot, makes me want to time travel back to 1978.

Did nobody in the writing team not notice that the chair they got for their dad, That Rhoda said was a terrible color, is the exact same color as ALL their other furniture lol

The decision to focus a lot more on Ida and Martin's marital woes, was a huge misstep for the show. Rhoda apparently ran out of friends, and only hung out with her Ma, sister and her sister's boyfriend. Oh, and her Lou Grant clone boss. The season was cancelled after nine episodes, and we only got to see the remaining four when they went into syndication. Not teh fitting ending Rhoda deserved.

@@jenniferholzman119 It wasn't intended to be the finale. The show intended to have a full season and end with Benny and Brenda's wedding. CBS cancelled the show before they got that far. In fact, episodes 10-13 weren't even aired. They were seen for the first time in syndicated reruns.
Nonsense. The changes in the fifth season were brilliant. And, the more that Ida became a friend, and it worked, the more intriguing that the show became. Everybody liked Ida! The more that they saw her, the happier that they were.
@@LarryLeeMoniz, I actually love the season finale, but I think that all 110 episodes are amazing. It was so quirky for them to end up in that weird movie theatre in the dark at night discussing some strange Swedish movie. And, it was about the importance of love and how big love was in their lives, the theme of the show, really. Then, in the final scene, Ida kissed Rhoda on the lips. Perfect! Fit the show. But, I have no reason to believe that it was intended for the last show. It just turned out great, which is appropriate, because they ended the Rhoda/Joe marriage years ago, and the show stayed just as amazing. It just is a show that remained great no matter what challenge was thrown at it.

Martin, in real life was age 54-55 here, not 60 as depicted on the show.

Everyone thinks Valerie has a perm here but it was actually her naturally kinky, curly hair which she had stopped straightening.

I remember the perm for any woman without curly hair! Don't get me wrong I was about 10 during this year (I onyl managed to get a perm in the early 80s).
Late 70s and till mid 90s were bad hair years worldwide. Friends brought back nice hairstyles

Ha! Good old Martin! I'd been wondering what happened to him. He got free! And he did it with class.
Back in '78, my gf had thick, gorgeous long blonde hair. One day she showed up with a perm like Rhoda's here, I almost keeled over.

I love this show.....but ideally it would've been less brutal on the audience if they managed to precede certain characters' leaving (first Joe, then Gary, now Pa) with something of a decent final appearance from each. It's happened three times here now.
Yeah but that made it more realistic. In life, there's rarely a decent final appearance.
I think the show found its best form in Season 4. I wish they had kept Gary in season 5.

In the 70's and 80's people permed their hair but wow that perm really killed Rhonda's beautiful hair. Jeez, what were the producers thinking, I really hate it.
J.C. Doucet the perms from. Back then made mincemeat of people's hair. That style was known as an "Afro."

Rhoda's dress at the beginning of the show looks like one my mother used to clean the house in 50 years ago.
Even though Rhoda's hair in this episode is natural, it still looks awful. Some people look great with tight curls, and other people don't.Brenda's hair is fine in this ep.
It's unfortunate that we didn't get new scenes for the opening credits. The visuals are exactly the same as season 4. At lease they sprung for a new theme variant.

Lots of people in that time period would keep plastic covers on their furniture.. not a good look but kept the furniture looking new all the time. Weird, I know

SO I HAVE A VERY SERIOUS QUESTION HERE. THE MARY TYLER MOORE SHOW ENDED IN 1977 (BRILLIANTLY MIGHT I ADD), WHILE RHODA WENT ON FOR ONE MORE YEAR UNTIL 1978. MY QUESTION: WHY NOT BRING THE CHARACTER OF MARY RICHARDS TO NEW YORK TO STAY WITH RHODA WHILE SHE LOOKED FOR ANOTHER JOB?? RATINGS WOULD HAVE BOOSTED TREMENDOUSLY FOR RHODA, EVEN WITH THAT MISTAKE THE WRITERS MADE BY HAVING RHODA AND JOE GET DIVORCED. THEY COULD HAVE NAMED THE SHOW MARY & RHODA IF THEY WANTED. DID PEOPLE JUST NOT CARE TO DO SOMETHING LIKE THAT AFTER THE LAST EPISODE OF THE MARY TYLER MOORE SHOW? MAYBE. BUT I THINK IT WOULD HAVE BEEN GREAT TO HAVE A SHOW ABOUT MARY AND RHODA IN NEW YORK WITH ALL THE RHODA CHARACTERS STILL THERE. WHY DIDN'T THEY DO IT? I EVEN REMEMBER IN THE LAST EPISODE OF MTM HOW RHODA SUGGESTED MARY COME TO NEW YORK FOR A WHILE TO STAY WITH HER AND LOOK FOR A JOB (UNTIL PHILLIS BUTTED IN). Thats sounds like a GREAT Missed OPPORTUNITY! Mary should have joined during season 5! Maybe then it wouldn't have been cancelled midseason.

It's awful.
Her natural hair is slightly wavy, she was always straightening it...even on the MTM show she dried her hair with big curlers to smooth it out...she didn't really need a perm to wear her hair curly. Why she kept trying to fix something that was already fabulous, I'm not sure...

Wow the theme music is so big and brassy this season. I'm not liking it. Rhoda had such beautiful hair in season 1. Looking at her hair in season 5, it's easy to understand why perms went out of fashion.
I liked this episode but it was quite weird!!!!!
I think the major cast changes with the departure of the character of Joe and actress Nancy Walker in Season 03 damaged the show.
First 2 seasons were genuinely funny.. after that it sucked.
It doesn't or didn't seem as if Rhoda had any friends...

I've been watching these episodes and I'm wondering how tall Brenda is..She is def. taller than Rhoda, who always wears heels..
It certainly seems like Julie was 2 to 3 inches taller than Valerie. At 14:00 standing side by side barefoot Julie is quite a bit taller. Julie had a habit of hunching over. She must have been self conscious of her height as a woman.
I guess Rhoda’s other siblings, Debbie and Arnold were def gone by then.

This is the first time I have seen season 5 of Rhoda because I never had the time to watch it during the late 1970s or early 1980s. Perhaps, the final season series wasn't aired because of low ratings or could have been replaced by new American sitcoms.
Ida is more of an old bag than an old shoe that has been worn out.
Seeing Valerie Harper stressed out, in a curly perm... was the low point of this series.
We all love this show, it’s creators and this cast, but it suffered toward the end.

RadRN Some families do that, some don't. My mom kisses her dad on the lips. I would never do that with my father, I think it's disgusting. lol But if they feel comfortable doing it, whatever.
Not strange at all imo. My family do. There's absolutely nothing sexual in it. It's affection.
We all do...we've lost a lot of family, when leaving each other there is no guarantee of seeing each other again. We always hug and kiss and say I love you.

Ida had two pretty daughters. Yet, she raised them with insecurities. Ida thinks she is gorgeous. She is in fact obnoxious. My mother also interfered in all our lives, but at least she really was gorgeous and classy and had a very successful career. In reality, an Ida, would not be welcome in our home. Conceited, sarcastic, etc. she is not a lovable character. Takes it too far.😮
It breaks continuity, they watched old family reels all together just a few episodes before, this is mis-match... ,and as i understand, harper didnt have luck with screenwriters later in career too
