European horses don't get the same amount of gate training that American horses do. Typically it is the 2 year old horses that tend to act up in the gate. Visually the gate is terrifying to them. So it takes time to get a horse used to seeing it parked, let alone get in and stand perfectly still inside of it. A good trainer will let the horse 'tell' him when he's fine to progress with the gate. It's a daily routine that must end on a good and happy note on order to progress. This horse is young. He'll have a great racing career in no time. Then he'll get a better 'job' as a stud.
These horses are still babies. Disgusting that they are put under such stress physically. These animals get killed on the track and the crowd doesn’t even care.
Some juveniles have great natural speed and talent. Thoroughbreds love to run no doubt. But some juvies just have too much adrenaline and get easily stressed out with all the sights and sounds of a race. Some of these athletes may never master the stressors of being on a racetrack. Unfortunately some owners don't give a crap. They look at their racehorse purely as an investment and make the trainer get them on the track competing no matter if they can handle it or not. These are the people that give horse racing a bad name. If a horse is not ready then don't stuff a sack over their heads and blinders around their eyes. Just accept they are not ready for the sensory overloads of a horse race.
@@leobowman8149 nothing bad happens? Is this a joke? Horses die on the tracks all the time, and horses that don't win or do well in races are commonly sent to slaughter. Not to mention they race 2 year old horses that don't have solid bones yet, which leads to fractures and early pain in life
@@greenamber133 two year Olds are ready to race. A majority of vets agree. Also if you know anything about horse racing you would know that 2 year Olds aren't pushed the same way as older horses.
Let these babies grow up to 4yr olds before they are raced, all race horses should not need ear plugs and a blindfold to load nor should they be ear twitched in the barrier to hold them there, and whips should be banned the horse should go when asked with hands and heels and voice not by an enthusiastic jockey with his/her overzealous use of a whip. This poor baby was really scared went up came down with a leg over rail then went over backwards also blind Freddy could see it was very lame when being led back to the saddling area.
I wouldn't say very. He was barely nodding. Monmouth park has banned whips. I watched a couple of races. Same excitement, looked liked any other race. The final times were not slower. Point in fact record times were achieved by horses that were never hit by the whip. E.g. Secretariat and Ruffian.
The problem here is they don't train them properly to load into the gate and a lot of the times they're actually afraid of it. I think there should be more training in regards to how to load into the gate. You shouldn't have to use a bunch of tools to get a horse into the gate, they should go in either on their own or just with a lead. And since these guys are also very young, they need to be broken in more before they're put in a race. These horses are not fully trained and it would probably be better for them to prevent these kind of things by making sure they are completely ready to be in a competition. I am glad that they decided to scratch the horse because he probably would have been too afraid to go back in or run. I just hope that he's not too traumatized.
These horses go through months of gate training and if you watch enough racing, you rarely get horses with severe gate issues. This was a one time incident with this horse.

All it can be is a horse is correct. So, why do humans interfere with that and put them in positions where they have to race, jump, dance, dressage.( be trained with tools") I have never seen a horse out in a field just jumping over logs laying around, I have never seen a horse side step/crossing it's legs over each other out of boredom ? Horses care about two things their longevity and food. They don't care about money, medals, ribbons, that's all human things and humans will be stupid by choice sadly.
Horses race to be the alpha so we don't push the to race they love it!!
Very lucky for connections here, had he got one of those front legs lodged between the gate it could have been much worse or even catastrophic.
I'm not sure if anyone else caught this but I noticed a slight limp in the front right leg when they had him trotting without the tack on
I did too. He might have just been sore.
Safety precautions? And they can say this with a straight face when describing a "sport" the thrives on the deaths of thousands of babies every year due to unnecessary break down, over breeding and horrendous abuse. Jockey gets hurt, it was his choice to get on the that baby. Colt or filly gets hurt...who cares, the owner collects the insurance and moves on to breaking down the next one.
Look at the percentage of horses dying and also compare countys. As far as I know race horses are dying a lot less in Europe than on the US!
@@johanna7096 In many European countries, horse meat is eaten by people so, slaughter rates are higher but understandable as horse is still a food staple to these areas. Japan and the US, however, over breed and break them down and throw them away to make a buck. The racing industry, in and of itself, is the height of abuse to young horses with gaited breeders coming in a close second for the destruction they do to young horses and all of this in the name of the almighty dollar. I have no issue at all with horses being used for food, I won't eat it but, I eat beef and people in India do not as cows are sacred to them. My Indian friends don't condemn me for eating beef and I don't condemn Europeans for eating horse. I condemn the racing industry for abhorrent cruelty and destruction of horses for money.
@@Ravennwing I think you are getting a few things messed up here. We are talking about race horses only. Not about slaughter rates in general! We are talking about how many horses die and as far as I know in the US (for example) the deaths on the track alone are IN PERCENTAGE higher (not just the numbers. The US is a lot bigger than germany for example) as well as race horses going to slaughter.
I do believe that there is horse based dog food in the US...? And in most European countries you can buy horse meat but its very rarely eaten - but I am too completely fine with that. As a meat-eating person I cant complain about ppl eating non-endangered animals meat. Even if its dog meat.
That's not how that works.
Who's that GORGEOUS pinto exercise pony?! Gottdam 🤩🤩🤩

Glad that the horse and jockey came out of this well. Sorry for all the horse racing fans who had the 1 & 2 as I did on my pk5 That was F*cked up what Del Mar did to us yesterday. Makes me really weary about a sport I love.
Understatement this decision to let the favorite run knowing this horse was on everybody's ticket and then let him run for purse money only. Screwing the betting public. This is one of the reasons horse racing is on the decline
@@alhanson7000 I've seen it twice in US Racing but nowhere else in the world. Does it happen much? It doesn't make any sense.
Just a horrible incident made worse by human error leading to the scratch of the clear best horse in the race. With multiple race wagers this error is unforgivable to those of us affected by this scratch for no reason
@@evannierenberg1007 how do you know if the horse doesn't have a hair line fracture. And by putting him back in the race and he finishing braking the leg then what. You lose out anyway and a dead horse and more people injured by him falling in front of others.. racing is a gamble in all aspects. My opinion.
@@evannierenberg1007 Especially since the horse in gate 3 was removed for “safety reasons” as well as the horse in gate 1. Just scratch the favorite in gate 1? How convenient.

Race horses do best if better broke before they even see a track ... I knew a ranch that had their trainer ride there colts on the ranch...they were easily handled and level headed when they went on to race training.
And as someone who has racehorses, I can tell you all about the training they go through before they get to the track anyway.

They’re young animals, don’t blame them

So happy ... no deaths!!!

Who thinks that this horse does not like racing?
Me
Over one incident? This horse has raced 6 times, has won 4 times, and ran show once. You may not think the horse doesn't like racing, but the horse himself says otherwise.
Lucky this was not catastrophic for that frightened horse. He is a juvenile and probably still not properly used to gates….racing is fraught with danger for horses, young and old…👎🏽
Would Barbaro have broken his leg if he’d been scratched?
I don't think people realize how dangerous this all is to horses. They can be spooked, and this can cause it flipping on a jokey, run loose, hurt itself and people around it.
One of the reasons I see horse racing as a completely unnecessary thing
Don't watch...solved it for you.

Absolutely ridiculous that this happened
Thoroughbreds are basically crazy animals…some more crazy than others. They get themselves all worked up and have to unleash that energy. Aren’t they amazing though? And the horse is okay so it’s all good. It happens.
These are 2yo baby thoroughbreds, not ridiculous at all theyre flight animals putting them into a small space like a starting gate goes against their nature.

Horse Racing 👍👍👍
Top jockey Alvaro Pineda was killed in the starting gate at Santa Anita in 1975.
He looks lame behind .. Glad the jockey got out. How these horses are handled is very important.
And the horse won the race
It seems to me like the jockeys couldn't care less about the horses as long as they themselves are okay
You aren’t the one risking your life along with a horses every race right? So don’t talk especially when you probably have no experience whatsoever on A thoroughbred
This horse does look basically fine...but does not seem to be perfectly sound. At the trot, as he was led out, seemed to be favoring his left front leg, just slightly. Seems to be landing just a bit heavily on the right front.

It’s obvious the horse doesn’t want to race .
It's obvious you can't read a horse's mind.
if horses won't go in the gate they don't need to be racing. it's clear that they don't want to be there or enjoy it.
He went into the gate fin and he's never had gate issues before or after this race. This was a one off incident with him.
That horse was hurt, he was off on the front.
It's clear that Albahr hates racing. They have to blindfold him and even then it doesn't ease his anxiety.
Just let him retire. Give him a new job.
R u ok
All races should be tape started. Stalls should be done away with. Safer for both Horse and Jockey.?????
I agree. It's easier to teach to stand still in wide open space than in a very tight enclosed space.
Like in the old days
No unfair to bettors especially in shorter races
The reason they invented barriers was to ensure a fair start and because both horses and jockeys kept getting caught on the tape
These horses are still babies. Disgusting that they are put under such stress physically. These animals get killed on the track and the crowd doesn’t even care.
They are put down when its the best choice for the horse
This was a freak accident. This horse didn't have gate issues in the past and hasn't since. It was a one off incident.

@@greenamber133 dumbass, read what I wrote. Happened, means something different than happens.
Should have walked the horse back, not trotting..
They trotted the horse to examine lameness.
Albahr is limping…he is NOT o.k.
