I bought the previous iteration of this EVSE from Shell back in August 2022. The J1772 handle looked different and there was no yellow. But it's a good evse! I use it as my main evse in the garage and take it with me on the 0-2 trips a month I make where I might want to charge at my destination on a road trip.
I have the previous version of this and it was all the light blue color and white. None of the yellow which I like better. Those colors do make it look like a toy especially that big red button. This is a nice unit though and works great. I have it in the trunk as it is my travel charger. When I bought it they would put it on sale every couple weeks for $100 off coupon on Amazon, so I would wait for the coupon
Thanks for the info, just ordered one yesterday It comes tmrw at least I won’t lose any charge at night from being parked and May gain a few more miles until I have the Nema 14-50 socket put In , thanks again…
Thanks! Yeah definitely not cheap. But out of the portable chargers I've tested, I think it's my favorite. Thick cables, long cord, ETL and Energy Star certified, adjustable, and a nice carrying case. Basically everything I'd want.
Im considering this one now since Amazon has it for $229 without the 110v adapter. I thought the colors were kinda goofy/childish but im hoping it makes it more noticeable and less of a tripping Hazzard
My only concern is the bright colors draw attention to it screaming if your an whole unplug me. I have a travel one that CST only $125 that is more stealthy. Can plug into a hotel regular outlet outside.
I have yet to find a location where using one of these is even an option. I've got my level 1 EVSE and a bunch of adapters in my frunk for road trips, and considered getting a portable level 2 EVSE, but who would even have public 240V outlets?
There are a decent amount of places with 14-50 outlets. Camping and RV places have them. Race tracks have them. And some business and public places have them.
Haha yeah my wife wasn't a fan of the colors, but like you said it definitely differentiates it from the other options. I really liked it though. Nice thick cables that are pretty long, easy to use, and worked well.
Would this work in Asia? Particularly the plug as this seems built for the US market. Would you reckon i change the plug on my own to a compatible one in Asia?

They changed the color of the unit. I've had one for over 2 years. Works well🎉
Yep that's what I've heard. I'm glad it's working well for you!
I bought this when I got my car 2 years ago and it's been great for home and traveling. No complaints, excellent product! 😁👍
Awesome! Yeah I really like it.
Nice to see Tonka now makes EV chargers 😊
😅😅

Awesome! Yeah I've heard many great things. I'm glad I was able to get one to test.
Nice! There aren't many options for dual 120/240V portable EVSEs, so this is a tempting option.
Yeah and this one works very well

Yeah the colors definitely make it seem more "toyish" but it definitely is noticeable. I really like it though.
Goodnight looking to buy one
quick question about how
many miles do you get an
hour using the 120v adapter
cord on 12amps?
On a 120v charger at 12A you'll get about 1.3 kW. At 3 miles/kWh you're looking at around 4 or so miles per hour.
Thanks for the info, just
ordered one yesterday
It comes tmrw at least
I won’t lose any charge
at night from being parked
and May gain a few more
miles until I have the
Nema 14-50 socket put
In , thanks again…
Yep exactly. I had a level 1 charger the first year I had an EV. Gained around 60 miles every night and just kept it topped off.
Nice review. It seems like a great travel charger but it's spendy, I may pick one up for my EV for travel as well.
Thanks! Yeah definitely not cheap. But out of the portable chargers I've tested, I think it's my favorite. Thick cables, long cord, ETL and Energy Star certified, adjustable, and a nice carrying case. Basically everything I'd want.
Yeah the one I have even on 240 40 amp only gives me about 3 kw.
Oh that's weird. That's only about 15 amps or so
Im considering this one now since Amazon has it for $229 without the 110v adapter. I thought the colors were kinda goofy/childish but im hoping it makes it more noticeable and less of a tripping Hazzard
Yeah those are my thoughts too
Hi Jeff. Just curious if you tested the Emporia 40amp charger. Everything I Read it supposed to be one of the best.
That one isn't portable, but it's good for a non-portable one.
I have one I'll be testing soon, but yes it's one of the best.
Yep yep
WHAT obd scanner app is that, is it carplay or android auto?
I'm using car scanner with my Tbox Plus I reviewed.
My only concern is the bright colors draw attention to it screaming if your an whole unplug me. I have a travel one that CST only $125 that is more stealthy. Can plug into a hotel regular outlet outside.
Yeah I get that. Idk how common vandalism is. I haven't seen it personally. Could always lock it to the car too.

Looks like a toy with these colors.
For sure they differenciate themselves from others 😅
Haha yeah my wife wasn't a fan of the colors, but like you said it definitely differentiates it from the other options. I really liked it though. Nice thick cables that are pretty long, easy to use, and worked well.
@@TechnicallyJeff Indeed the cables seem made to handle a very high load 😅
Lol yep

Asia doesn't use a J1772 connector do they?
