Pine can release sap when heated. Any wood crafter will tell you to use hardwood maple or similar close grained hardwood with no finish. Maple stair rails work well, too, but they are not cheap. For the same reason you don't store quilts on wooden shelves, using pine can actually deteriorate or stain your quilt blocks in years to come and washing may not take it out. That's part of the reason wood clappers are more expensive. Good idea but use the right wood.

I love your video. I am going to try and make one but out of maple. Though your execution is great, you need a harder wood for the clapper. Pine will, when warmer, start leaching out a bit of pitch. The hard wood will absorb the heat and flatten the seams better.

HA! I did the same thing! I used a small cutting board. I used flat weights to make it heavier so it would press harder. I love it and use it all the time. Also, the coolness of the wood makes the seams set quicker. I'm so glad you made this video.

About six years ago, just before clappers were starting to make their way into the quilting world, I went to HD and bought myself a length of maple 1x4 for a cpl bucks. They sell it by the foot. I went into the tool rental dept and asked the guy to cut it with a fine blade in a miter saw, so it wouldn’t be all raggedy from the big saw. I still had to sand it. New wood often has a slightly sticky coating on it; not sure if it’s sap or a finish put on at the mill. But I love it. It’s about 12-14” long and the sticky residue never came back. I did this bc I had watched some Craftsy classes with Angela Wolf on Tailoring Ready to Wear clothes and she showed how valuable a clapper can be. But they were so expensive.
Now after seeing yours, I’m thinking how great wd it be to have a block-sized clapper, just for quilting? !!! 😂

The clapper is not only to flatten but also to absorb the heat and humidity to cool and "fix" the fabric. (Just like blowdrying your hair ) It is why they are not painted nor varnished. Your idea is great. I made mine with a remnent piece of 2 x 4 . But for making blocks, your idea is much better.

I trust there is enough room to set up space for a friend to come and see along. Put a couple of easy chairs to sit in and enjoy a cup of your favorite tea or____. Get a friend to come help you arrange your supplies and equipment. Wish I could come by and set a while. Happy sewing and enjoy your time together. Thank you for sharing. Hi. When trying to place those little pegs on the handle you could rub some chalk on the ends and place it where you want it. The chalk should leave a mark for drilling. Also, if you wrap a little piece of tape on your drill bit to show how deep to drill, it will make drilling too deep unlikely.
