Also Kane wasn't trying to pet an alien, he just got a little bit too curious and that's what killed him. He died cause of his curiosity while the other one died of stupidity. Alsoo everyone taking their helmets off because one did and could breathe still makes no sense.
@@MrTrebol4hojas specifically it makes no sense because anyone with even the slightest knowledge of pathology knows that airborne contaminants don't necessarily kill you in 3 seconds, but can be very very deadly over any number of hours, days or even years with even brief exposure.
Exactly, Kane is a second-in-command to the captain. Basically a glorified navy officer on a routine resource transport with a pilot’s license and some engineering and medical expertise. Not a scientist or scientific expert by any means. Edit: Also, having seen Alien: Romulus. The movie has flaws for sure, but they did a great job of having characters not be overly stupid. These guys are even less qualified than the OG Alien squad (no officers, no military protocol to fall back on), and they didn’t do anything that is out of the realm of understandable panicky human reactions.
Your retrospectives are one of my favorite things on the internet. Great work! You gave me 5+ hours of joy and freedom from this real and depressing world.

I still want an Alien movie set in Hadleys Hope, how the facility was taken over and Newt being the sole survivor. Can’t believe they never made that movie.
Why do people always ask for the same old stuff?? Theres untold amount of stories in the galaxy.. who cares about some destroyed colony that we already know how it ends...
This video kept me occupied for DAYS on my trainrides to work... And I loved every minute of it. Next up is the evil dead retrospective and I'm even more excited for that!
Someone might have pointed this out already but there is a deleted scene with Burke's death. When Ripley goes to save Newt she finds him cocooned in a wall and he cries/begs for help and says that he feels the Alien inside of him so she gives him a bomb and he kills himself. I think the scene is somewhere on RUclips.
I might be late to the party but the lube that they used for the Android is actually kinda correct. Lube that is used in high head machining is white. It's called cutting lube.
Fascinating, I’ve always wondered if that was a festive choice or based on reality. Since I was a kid I was always just thought that someone on the production team had a hook up at a dairy farm and they had a lot of extra stock lol.
@ I worked at a CNC machining plant back in the late 90’s. When I first saw the cutting lube, I put 2&2 together. The other part is, it has a super strong and unique smell. Now when I rewatch these movies, I can smell the android blood lol.
I'm working overnights right now so I'll be back for the other retrospectives but I just wanted to say thank you for actually organizing your playlists..!!
I’m completely with you on Prometheus. While definitely not an Alien movie, imo it is one of the best space sci-fi action-horror films of the 20th century. I’d argue that besides David it doesn’t have the most amazing characters, but the sound design and visuals alone make it an incredible work of art. The story has some obvious flaws, but it is told in a very compelling way. The atmosphere is so fucking good and it excels in every aspect of design, which makes it a masterpiece of it owns, in the digital era. Though nothing will ever come close H.R. Giger’s work in terms of creature design.
Totally agree. I'll even say that I liked covenant. I love how there is so much visual storytelling. Makes it feel like dark souls where you need to puck apart lines and background elements to try to piece together the full story. Another thing I never hear anyone say, David is an amazing character. Discovers his superiority to his creator and develops a God complex. So cool seeing him lose his mind and how he kind of ends up remaking the xenomorph, which you can see already existed by the wall in prometheus, and in his cave where there's a fossilized egg. His creepy experiments and his weird idea that he is doing God's work is really unique. I'm really sad we won't see the last movie in his story
Why do people keep saying that the first movie in the Alien series isn't an Alien movie? It's more of an Alien movie than any of the Alien movies Ridley Scott didn't make. Of course it's an Alien movie. The xenomorph bioweapon is literally what the movie is about. Not every movie in a series has to have the series name in the title. Ever heard of James Bond? Fucking bizarre take.
@@Jensen8918 The only thing Aliens added to the lore is an explanation of where the eggs come from. How that ruins any mystery is the real mystery to me.
Thank you for defending Prometheus! I didn't know it was a part of the Alien franchise when it first came out. I found out later and watched it and really enjoyed it as well.
My parents took me to see Alien at a mega theater, that was packed.. with adults, when I was SEVEN. This movie scared the hell out of me! I had to sleep in my parents bedroom for 2 weeks. I guess they thought it was a sci-fi and couldn't find a sitter. Anyway, I LOVE the series and lore as a result and really enjoy your deep dive. Thank you! Edit: you are right, and I agree, Prometheus is AMAZING.. very interesting considering the Engineer fascinated me since I was a kid.
I had an alien queen figure i left on the toilet as a kid and it spooked my mom so much she didnt want to sit down cuz she thought an alien would pop out the toilet
I’m an Alien fan but funny enough, I never knew about Prometheus till like 2018 or something. I was looking for a sci fi movie to watch one afternoon and came across Prometheus never knowing it’s part of the alien universe… And I never realized it’s an alien prequel movie till the very last scene and I lost my shit. So I actually got a 10/10 experience because I never made connection till the very end. So I also like the movie quite a bit
Honestly that's an amazing way to go and see it that way. Because if you are anticipating it to be one of the Alien movies then when it does connect harder and you saw the Space Jockey for the first time again, it would be such a rad sweep of emotions for me lol. I still really enjoyed it but I knew it was Ridley Scott and an Alien prequel.
And if you think about it that's what made their original alien so good was because none of the previews gave anything away back when it came out. Actually because they couldn't for all the gore and how far out it was at the time, it wasn't going to pop on right during Walter Cronkite lol
Hell yeah man I love seeing people that love this movie. I thought it was really cool and it does this kind of dark souls thing where it leaves a bunch of clues everywhere ki d of hinting at the full picture but never stating it. I didn't know until I saw the weyland utani logo and I still ended up loving the movie
Yeah... There's also Alien Covenant in case you don't know. It's Prometheus II basically. Idk what's going on with these producers... It's the same thing with Star Wars... They're PREQUELS and everythingggggg is more technologically advanced. Prequels have the little detail that they're in the PAST. Past.... Older.... You see. But in case of Star Wars, well, it's kind of justified because the original movies are after the "big war". So yeah resources are more scarce and diminished in principle... But still... Having robots all over the place and then just have humanoids and little cars.... It's kind of a big pill to swallow
Yeah, that was the original Giger designed life cycle. The queen was James Cameron. He made them an insect like hive organism. I think the darkhorse comics took a more interesting direction after Aliens than the movie franchise, although 3 and resurrection both have interesting things about them. The comics have cyborg aliens and drugs made from alien royal jelly and an alien outbreak on earth.
It's not just that it's stupid to pet the space cobra. It's also uncharacteristic, given that the character was absolutely terrified of a corpse just a few minutes earlier.
Definitely going to be watching this every night before bed for days. Your long format retrospectives are perfect for me to relax and watch as a drift to sleep. Thank you Ryan. P.S. would you be open to doing a Hellraiser retrospective? I would freakin love that. I know the franchise goes off the rails after part 4, but it would make a great retrospective.
Doing my part! Cheers, Alien and Aliens are some of my favorite movies to date. And I think more people like Prometheus than most think. Especially as the times have passed. At first we wanted more xenomorphs but on more watches, you learn to appreciate it for what it is so much more. Hell, I enjoy Covenant more so as time passes too. Not the best in the IP but it’s a fun watch!
A very high-end presentation. Contrite, incisive, non-critical, erudite, well-researched, comprehensive, entertaining, socio-politically satirical, thought-provoking. What’s not to like. I cannot conceive of the effort and time put into this astoundingly excellent video essay on such a popular-but-divisive franchise. Subscribed! Only thing that surprised me was your lack of entry of the Prometheus translation scene. You ask many questions around the scene where the engineer speaks to David, which are answered if you dig.
Alien was the first R rated movie I ever watched other than “Coming to America” with Eddie Murphy which is also good but not in the same way. I absolutely love Alien and Aliens, it really was a breath of fresh air to see a creature feature this imaginative and disturbing. A lot of credit has to go to Giger I have read his books and the more I wish he worked on Dune just for the odd spectacle.
My mom wouldn't let me go see it when it first came out BECAUSE it was R-rated. I was 9. It wasn't the blood and gore that mattered to her; it was because R movies might have nudity in them. She didn't care if blood was spraying all over or bone was sticking out. If there were boobs, however...

I also loved Prometheus, and I’ve got some points on it that you might appreciate: -David’s conversation with the engineer is subtitled in a version I’ve seen, and in the original cut the engineer speaks indo-European which is very cool. David is purposefully mistranslating weyland’s statements in pursuit of his own agenda, trying to glean information that he deems more important than the mission. -the mural of the alien is one a lot of people theorised about, how did they know what it looked like if it hadn’t been created yet? The alien is the perfect life form, and evolution is (to a certain point) convergent. You know the addage about monkeys writing Shakespeare with enough time? Yeah like that, except this life form very quickly becomes the most ubiquitous and adaptable organism that can physically exist. The black goo ALWAYS turns into a xenomorph, because with rapid trial and error the body will eventually arrive at the best conclusion. The xenomorph.

It’s the film I always show a newcomer to the Alien universe. I saw A V P in theaters 20 years ago, but didn’t realize there was more to it. I love that movie as well, reminded me of Banjo Tooie and the Aztec gun battle maps.
Another solid offering. I too have a fond spot for Alien Resurrection -- it was the first Alien that I saw at the theater. After years of it being a cable/VHS experience for me, there was added epic scope to seeing an Alien movie on the big screen.
This movie gave me the life long fear of extraterrestrials. I watched this movie when I was around 8. Though I was scared it became my favorite movie ever since. I’m 32 now but I still love the hell out of one and two. I’ll watch them all but not really 3 and 4
Prometheus was fantastic. The sequel was also just as good, I loved the film’s score. So exciting yet creepy at the same time. Creepy exploration almost lol. I appreciate your passion for Prometheus and keep up the great work. But I remember how Prometheus was hyped and sold by the studio as an Alien prequel. Even the all the trailers are constantly pulling sounds and images from the original film. So when the audience show up for the original director expending the lore and story of his original blockbuster, then come to find out its more sci-fi origins of everything, with small bits of cliched horror, and a loose connection at best to Alien. I have seen dozens of retrospectives about this franchise and still enjoy people talking about it. I love Alien, but at this point I think I saw the making of more often than the movies.
I love Prometheus. I watch it a few times a year. It’s just perfect to me ; doesn’t answer all my questions so I can come to my own conclusions, takes place in space where so much can go wrong (and does), has a crew who are just trying to make sense of things, and a droid created by a morally corrupt person who mirrors this behavior-and is proven as imperfect as his creator- even without being human himself. Pair that with the cinematography and the music and it’s just…perfect.
Weird that you say that people nitpick prometheus when you're nitpicking Covenant and the david stuff lol BUT I have 3 reasons for the David fake out 1. Walter had a face scar, David didn't. And Daniels saw that scar, David recreated the same scar in the exact same way Walter had it. When they enter the ship Daniels straight away looks at David's cheek and sees the exact same scar. 2. She assumes that David lost cause of the scar and they literally say in the movie before Walter fights David that Walter is superior and more advanced, that's why he wasn't dead. She assumes Walter won. 3. David complies every order and in the exact same mannerisms Walter had. 4. You're fighint an alien creature, you have no time for interrogation
@@Somereasonstolive lol how so? It's a legitimate alien game which nails the atmosphere maybe the gameplay isn't for you? If you haven't played xcom it's understandable but to call it generic of all things is really dumb

I'm making another comment just because you asked about the Millburn/Kane comparison. I'd say the reason they aren't is because of how they approached their respective demise. With Kane, the egg opened, and nothing happened immediately. He wasn't expecting whatever was inside (that he couldn't see through the fleshy mass within) to launch itself with such speed that he had no time to react Whereas Millburn's situation is extraordinary stupid because the creature did nothing to convince him it was harmless. It was giving off the same warning signs a snake does when it feels threatened, and he just ignores that and still tries to touch its face. Kane was curious, Millburn was stupid.
You coverage of Prometheus was definitely my favorite part of this video. A big stand out for me. Your commentary about the universe and what lies beyond our world was fascinating to me.
I believe whole heartedly that the deleted scene in Alien is cannon. As you said, just another form of reproduction without a queen. I’d think the perfect organism has a failsafe method of reproducing. It could also be theorized that the original xenomorph from the first movie would become a queen if it continued on with its life cycle, but I’m not 100% sure on that one
Would make a LOT of sense, if the Xenomorph determines there's no Life Forms to infect, and it's going to die anyways. Morph into a Queen and spend the rest of it's Life Cycle making Eggs.
David Fincher speaking about Alien 3 - Empire, November 2023 "The one shot that Fox was happy to put in the trailer: the Alien's filing-cabinet drawer opening on Sigourney [Weaver]'s face. I always knew we wanted to do it and it never looked the way I wanted it to. I wanted to light all behind her. It should have been two shapes in silhouette, we should have had more coverage of it, and we didn't - mostly because we were spending all our f**king time trying to shoot plates for the rod puppet side of the thing. I think we had an hour-and-a-half to get that. But it's powerful, because it's a powerful idea."
I don't remember anyone saying the twist with Ash was unecessary. Everyone I know praises the scene for how smartly written it was and how you could pick up on hints from multiple rewatches.
This video was a massive breath of fresh air- what incredible work! I’ve honestly never heard someone speak of these films as a whole with so much positivity and passion- especially Prometheus (which, I too, absolutely adore.) I too really like the Prometheus. Seeing how the aliens became they way are up to Alien is really really cool. Along with commentary on Intelligence trying to perfect intelligence and surpassing its creator is a really fun thing to explore through David.
I agree, i adore the prequels but they are so hated on by everyone simply because they dont have the original xenomorphs. Its like no one cares about the plot, which makes me so mad because the plot is soooo good
If you like the concept of the PredAlien, you should give the games that spawned it a shot, if you haven't already! Aliens vs Predator 1 and 2 both feature it, and the 2010 AvP game does as well! Aliens vs Predator also features the absolute nightmare that is the Xenoborg. Because Weyland-Yutani desperately wanted to know what would happen if they grafted a minigun and a rocket launcher to a Xenomorph. Spoiler: It goes exactly as poorly as you'd expect.
Thanks for this video. When I saw prometheus in the movies with my friend, we both finished the movie and felt conflicted. Cool video. The Xenomorph existed before Prometheus. There is a mural in the ship from Prometheus depicting the Xenomorph. So David created a Xenomorph based on what already existed
Makes me think yes the engineers already went down that path, David just made his own version. Makes more sense that the engineer ship on LV426 had been there for thousands of years since the dead engineer was fossilized

Also, mulburn had earlier been shown to be afraid of just an alien corpse. Now he wants to pet an alien snake?
Your retrospectives are one of my favorite things on the internet. Great work! You gave me 5+ hours of joy and freedom from this real and depressing world.

I still want an Alien movie set in Hadleys Hope, how the facility was taken over and Newt being the sole survivor. Can’t believe they never made that movie.
I'm reading the book based on those events. Haven't got to the good stuff yet, but it's not too bad. There are a number of inconsistencies, though.
What’s the story arc? Everyone dies, the end? Doesn’t make a good movie.
@@nebulousy Newt survived, plenty of movies have a sole survivor.
@@InfamyOrDeath-__- That's true but with Newt's story the Aliens won the battle & conquered the habitat.
Exactly. Aliens, although a great movie, turned the Alien isn't a silly insect which is zapped of all mystery. @@gavinmillar
Promethius sucked.
It was extremely lame.
I thought it was a very unique and interesting movie. I appreciate how it gives some answers but also introduces new mystery.
Thank you!
Edit: you are right, and I agree, Prometheus is AMAZING.. very interesting considering the Engineer fascinated me since I was a kid.
oh my god i loved the movie, i saw it around 5 or 6, i knew and understood it was all fake and i loooved it.
Same boat here, didn't know until the end and it was great
Hellraiser retrospective would be amazing I love all of those films
I "like" the idea of Dallas corpse turning into an egg. This could ensure the species' survival in the absence of a queeen.
Life uh finds a way
Sir, here is your comment. Your like was placed at the fore.
Awesome retrospective dude. I enjoyed every bit of it. Thank you
Awesome video ryan, love to see your passion in these projects
Dang, I thought you said this will be done in a month. Man's been putting in that work!

@@timothybeaulieu5103 Listen the human body is far more disturbing than death and mutilation. That doesn’t sound creepy at all.
I’m not saying that your mom is otherwise a bad person.
@@lorddevilfish5868Nah she is.

I also loved Prometheus, and I’ve got some points on it that you might appreciate:
-David’s conversation with the engineer is subtitled in a version I’ve seen, and in the original cut the engineer speaks indo-European which is very cool.
My theory is that the engineers got the black goo from the xenomorph rather than creating it.
The best way to enjoy Prometheus is to Solely Concentrate on the Path the Black Goo takes from Inside The Ampule > Drugged Drink > Insemination > Rebuild/Repair Female Reproductive System that was not able to get Pregnant before > Cephalopod Tummy Burster > Trilobite > Bodyhug Engineer > Deacon
I also know of a YT Video that shows both what The Deacon does after being left on LV-223 & The Parasite Containment Event that happened where we see the Data Echoes show the Engineers running from something in Prometheus; and what lead up to the Engineer Head being decapitated
Let me know if you want to watch I’ll post the YT Vid Links here
I think david essentially reverse engineers the xenomorph/fast tracks its genetics. it’s not that he invented them, he understood how to manipulate.

Prometheus was my first exposure to alien, and it absolutely made me a fan. I own every box set & media I can get my hands on.
I just binged your other horror retrospectives and I was anticipating this series to be talked about, I can’t wait!

I’d love to see more of those huge bald white aliens and their history. How they came to be. It was cool to see their demise but it would be nice to see where they came from.

Because Shane wasnt a scientist ... also those 2 scientist in Prometheous got lost , while having and deploying the 3d mapping heck one of them IS the mapping guy and he got lost???? You cant excuse that stupidity.
You can't be surprise at the reception.

Incredible work mate. Thank you.
Weird that you say that people nitpick prometheus when you're nitpicking Covenant and the david stuff lol BUT I have 3 reasons for the David fake out
Lance Henriksen was also killed by alien, predator, and terminator. Awesome video!
He and Bill Paxton are the only two I believe

Never give up on your filmmaking dream! Your passion exudes potential for a truly special vision! Great vid btw
I'm making another comment just because you asked about the Millburn/Kane comparison. I'd say the reason they aren't is because of how they approached their respective demise.
With Kane, the egg opened, and nothing happened immediately. He wasn't expecting whatever was inside (that he couldn't see through the fleshy mass within) to launch itself with such speed that he had no time to react
Whereas Millburn's situation is extraordinary stupid because the creature did nothing to convince him it was harmless. It was giving off the same warning signs a snake does when it feels threatened, and he just ignores that and still tries to touch its face.
Kane was curious, Millburn was stupid.
Kane was also a space trucker, Millburn was a trained biologist and "top of his field", yet acted like a dude on shrooms trying to pet a space snake
Hell yeah Ryan, another great video. Keep making wat you love man! Will first have to refresh myself on the Alien films!

I also liked Prometheus. I like the director trying new stuff. I get people not liking it, but I respect the bravery of the man
I believe whole heartedly that the deleted scene in Alien is cannon.
I remember reading somewhere that if the xenomorphs don't have a queen, one will evolve through pheromones
David Fincher speaking about Alien 3 - Empire, November 2023
"The one shot that Fox was happy to put in the trailer: the Alien's filing-cabinet drawer opening on Sigourney [Weaver]'s face.
I’ve been waiting to finally sit and watch/listen to this! It’s always a good day when you post Ryan! Your content genuinely brings me so much joy!

Aliens vs Predator 1 and 2 both feature it, and the 2010 AvP game does as well!
Aliens vs Predator also features the absolute nightmare that is the Xenoborg.
