- The eastbound "California Zephyr" arrives at the station in Ottumwa, Iowa on a mostly sunny August 8, 2016. Third out on Amtrak #6 is a brand new locomotive. This SC-44 or Charger diesel-electric engine has been built by Siemens in Sacramento, California. This is the first time an SC-44 has made it east of Colorado. 4604 here is on its way to the Northeast Corridor for testing.
Another train enthusiast that was here at the depot photographed the Charger: flic.kr/p/K1XFfU.

Am I the only one that's more impressed with the sound of the chug of the P42's than the Charger locomotive?
Kevin Williams gotta love them p42s
But chargers are pretty cool right?
No, definitely not.
@@outcoredragraces8656 nah they're a piece of shit.
Every morning I see them running in push configuration on the Milwaukee to Chicago line. It looks really cool, they have pretty bright LEDs behind that X chapped screen.
I have a HO Scale Amtrak Midwest Charger it's beautiful.
Excellent footage. Was hoping to catch this yesterday, but only saw it through the woods. Really enjoy the up close details. Can't wait to see them in action.
Thanks. I'm hoping Amtrak can get the funding for the add-on orders.
Add-on orders? Sorry, not quite up-to-date on the news surrounding the Chargers. I know CalTrans and WDOT ordered some of these...is Amtrak proper ordering some?
At first glance I thought the Station was abandoned
Greetings a year later from a random DNP
The steelwork at Ottumwa station could do with a coat of paint....
It would do wonders for the stations appearance.
A small team of about three or four people with shotblaster and some tins of paint could probably complete the task in about a week or two........three weeks if some welding repairs were called for.....
Great video - I really like the looks of these new Charger units!
Thanks!

The bane of the genesis
Nice... Check out those fancy wheels.
Woof, woof, my human likes that - and he says he recognizes that station too!
These new Locomotives are going East to replace the Electric Motors on the Maryland Area Regional Commuter aka MARC for the Baltimore/Washington DC Metropolitan area Suburban Commuters.
Nice catch, show be in testing by now. Thanks for the video.
Interesting how they sound like a Semi. They wouldn't be so awful if they got rid of all of the big vents and had a different sound.
Cummins engine, so no surprise. I prefer the sound of the GE P42s.
+SteamboatWilley same
Great catch
Very nice i thought it was a demonstrator
Nice catch
Sweet catch Adam
Thanks!
Amtrack sc44 will be so happy!!
Why do all new locos have to be so ugly? Not just the front, in fact that seems to be the best part of these, the complete lack of any thought that went into the bodysides and grilles.
I agree. I would prefer to see a pair of GE ET44AHs up front.
There are regulations requiring them to be ugly.

I like the p42's look more than the sc-44
imagine when a charger will be involved in a accident how expensive will it be to repair
Black Devil you guessed right, there was one that crashed in the Pacific Northwest, Cascades, going 80 mph on a curve that only allows for 30 mph. The cost to repair it, I’m not too sure how much but I bet it was very expensive
Unlike a P42 which is cheap? 🤦
so they will be Amtrak northeast corridor first diesel
Got a question. Will the siemens" logo will remain or the Chargers will be repainted with Amtrak scheme? greetings from Mexico
Rafael Ortiz the Siemens logo will remain on all chargers, and some companies purchased the Chargers for train service. For example, the new Brightline received SCB-40 locomotives (Charger locomotives with a modified front) for higher-speed rail service in South Florida, MARC is getting their SC-44s to replace the electric locomotives that they use on the NEC, Amtrak Midwest is using charger locomotives (seen in this photo,) Cascades has chargers that go with their talgo train sets, and Caltrans and Surfliner have and will be getting Chargers too
It makes more sense to put Amtrak on there then to keep Siemens I mean you don't see big ge or emd on do you they just have a build plate.
Diesel sounds like a Soviet TEP-60.
Nice catch. Hmm...should be on tomorrow's cap limited.
Thank you. Good luck on seeing it.
Look at the platforms. What an absolute disgrace. Looks like the station was abandoned. Is that the best AMTRAK and Ottumwa Iowa can do?
Blame the Republican Congress, not to mention Iowa's Republican government.
Cats01 would you like to pitch in funding to make it better? Or maybe provide materials and labor to make it how you like it?
I kinda like it, gives it that retro look, like back in the carter days
It is up to the city/county/state to maintain the railroad stations, not unlike airports.
Looks like post-war Europe. That is a disgrace.
I wouldn't be surprised if the chargers made their way to the nec or the lake shore limited. The Chargers would make a great trip from Boston to DC nonstop. It would be sick if they were on the silver meteor or long distance trips that have P42's to decrease travel time. Plus the ACS units would find their microwaved twin lol.
ericerock1000 they technically are going to run on the northeast corridor, but Marc will operate them. Also, it wouldn’t make sense to run diesel locomotives all the 456 miles from DC to Boston as they are slower, less efficient as high speed electric trains. Even though they can go 125 mph like the ACS-64, it wouldn’t be reasonable to run them all the way and back
They were like this way back in 1977 also, but I hear they are being renovated soon?
Great catch ! Awesome engine ! Siemens build cool locomotives ! My favorite is the Diesel Vectron from Siemens !
Thanks.

gone are the clean evolution design lines and now it looks like a european invasion for petes sake, siemens paid for that add space?
Nice
Are the chargers going to be running everywhere? New subscriber btw :)
Railfan X 2 no, they are a DEF unit. Only road power for sale (passenger) is GE's HSP46-T4.
Wow Amtrak Charger SC 44

Yo No Sabía Que Existían Las Locomotoras Fabricadas Por SIEMENS
What is a chrger?
when should the next one be on the CZ Btw I'm OMAHATRAINKID
Good luck with your video
I also do content like that 🥰
I don’t care for the Seimans. Too European. I love the P42s.
when's the next one scheduled?
I'm not sure if there is a schedule for the next one yet. I look here for the latest news (go to the last page for the newest): discuss.amtraktrains.com/index.php?/topic/65029-new-siemens-charger-locomotive/.
Omaha station ?
Lettering on the station: "Ottumwa". See also the "Show More" explanation. Funny how each iteration of propulsion machinery gets jumped on as not living up to the standards of the previous- ugly, sounds bad, you name it. For one, the Cummins prime-mover runs close to 2000 rpm, so yes, it's quieter, and smaller, lighter. Good thing. Bye bye, "good old days."
too European for me!
are these ment to replace the p42's
I know California, Washington and Indiana (or Illinois?) all ordered them to replace their local Amtrak lines, I'm not sure why they're going to the NEC for testing though, nor if they're replacing the P42's
+archlinuxrussian No they're not. They only bought 41. Amtrak has over 207 Genesis Diesels. Rumors are they are going back to GE.
+Amtrak America ah
Amtrak America
ah, as I suspected :) thanks for the clarification. I wish I stayed more in-tune with these rumours xD I'm looking forward to seeing Chargers running on the San Joaquin line though!
MARC will be purchasing them for use on the NEC.
They should've kept the genesis body.
The Chargers are too quiet. No personality at all. Can't even tell they're diesel-powered.
Is that engine seriously a DEF unit? Bull crap, grade A bull crap from the EPA.
jfsa380 So is the EMD F125 and the "new" EMD switcher.
The only road power in passenger right now - and for a long time into the future - is GE's HSP46-T4, which will eventually replace the P40/42
great catch!
Thanks.
Awesome catch
Thank you.
