    The Siemens SC-44 Charger is a diesel-electric passenger locomotive designed and manufactured by Siemens Mobility for the North American market. The first production unit was unveiled on March 26, 2016.
    The SC-44 Charger locomotive is powered by a 4,400 hp Cummins 16 cylinder diesel engine, which is designed to meet EPA Tier IV emissions standards that took effect in 2015. Top speed in service is 125 mph.
    There are 61 SC-44 Charger locomotives on order for Amtrak: 20 for California to use on the Capitol Corridor and San Joaquin, 8 for Washington to use on the Cascades, and 33 for Illinois, Michigan, Missouri for their services such as the Hiawatha Service, Wolverine, and Missouri River Runner.
    This locomotive could eventually replace the P42 which is aging. The main difference between the SC-44 configured for corridor service such as the Cascades, is a larger 2,200 gallon fuel tank as opposed to the 1,800 US gallon tank on the corridor locomotive.
    These Charger units are arriving in Albuquerque, New Mexico on train number 4, the Southwest Chief. After uncoupling the two lead engines, they proceed north on Main 2 a short distance away. The third locomotive along with the two charger units and an Amtrak Horizon car used by the crew, are uncoupled from the main train and parked on track three. Later that evening they will travel north to the Transportation Technology Center in Pueblo, Colorado for testing.
    The two lead locomotives are then coupled back onto the Southwest Chief and after servicing, will proceed eastbound to Chicago.

    Traveling through Albuquerque a few years ago, Amtrak supplied a friendly off duty soldier (in uniform) along with a large German Shepard to keep an eye on the sleeper passengers as we grabbed some fresh air. Street people looking to hit us up for change. They kept their distance. Great video, thanks.

      Thanks for watching. The Amtrak station in ABQ has turned into a pit. When I was growing up, the Alvarado Hotel and the Harvey House were good places to stay and eat. Now they are gone. The police have a big presence there which helps, but our entire downtown area is in desperate need of some good old fashioned gentrification.

    Nice video! Good to see the charger units. Ive seen 4 of these so far. Sad to hear these won't be on the 3 and 4 I'm assuming for the mountainous terrain out west. Thanks for sharing this video!

      Thanks for watching! I think at some point the long range version will be on 3 and 4. Something is going to have to replace the aging P42's.

    The new Siemens Charger is quite a bit quieter than the older ones as it passes by!

    Then you'll see a lot of Chargers coming through on their way to the TTC in Pueblo for testing. Are you going to take ride on the New Mexico Roadrunner? I think the beep-beep roadrunner sounds for the closing of the door is a hoot.

      We're looking forward to seeing more Chargers up here! I've ridden the RailRunner several times between Bernalillo and Santa Fe. It's pretty cool with some nice scenery!

    OK--good video. But, with all this stuff going on, how did AMTRAK keep power on in the passenger cars of #4 (A/C, food, toilets, etc.)? And, how late did all this stuff make #4? To me, this whole operation seems to be an insane monstrosity.

    • @YardLimit
      @YardLimit  7 лет назад

      I don't know the answer to the first question. The train was already a couple hours late and this activity made it another hour late. I agree that there should be a better way of doing this, such as just moving the Siemens units separately for the entire distance instead of tacking them onto 4 and then setting them out in ABQ and then moving them to Pueblo after that.

      Unless they had ground HEP they didn’t have power for the A/C, the toilets will flush off battery power.

      Hahahahaha! Yes, I said ABQ sucks. Bad dog! I actually didn't know I was banned, just told to read the rules. Thanks for watching this video though!
