- John Lydon talks about a Sex Pistols reunion, Sid Vicious and Malcolm McLaren, interviewed by Jonathan Ross February 9th 1990, I missed this show, but a friend recorded it by chance and loaned me the tape to copy, so this is now on Scotch L750, tape archive 483.

The legend who called out Saville before anyone else

Great interview that I had not seen before, I had no idea he was offered a part in Drugstore Cowboy, one of my favs!
Glad you enjoyed it Alan
He did ? WOW 😯 Quadrophenia too. But, he didn't get it due to the studio refusing to insure him.
Lydon is a national treasure.
31 years ago and so honest 😁
Honesty integrity, quality.
Total contradiction
Sell out Rotten never 🤡
He always contradicts himself. The more you get to know him, the more this becomes obvious. He's like Trump - telling one audience one thing, then a different audience the opposite. Whatever makes him look cool.
Loved when he had red hair
John Lydon is such a rarity. I would say he is singular. Brutal, honest, and genuine. And seeing how he has always stood by his wife, he's a fucking good man too. Total respect.
MAGA
people don't 'get praised for doing what's expected of them.
Not at all, broaden your horizon. He's turned out to be hypocritical and very banal. The latest album is simply an imitation of all previous PIL albums. He has nothing much to say at all.
I met im in LA he was very pleasant I was surprised how polite he was. I was a door girl at the club and we ushered him in Viper Room was nuts in the 90s when Johnny still owned it
😀@@lisanolan2382
The more i watch John the more i like him.
same here
Never judge a book by its cover loyalty to his wife in these troubled times total RESPECT good luck to both of you in the future
You determine your liking over someone by how ‘loyal’ they allegedly are to their wife..?
@@mysticheatedwine2172 I'm sure that was one of many reasons. But how much do you want to read?
@Michael Davidson
He's a total hypercrite. "Filthy Lucre" reunion!
@Michael Davidson Who’re you even referring to when saying ‘sell out American musician’? Americans have fuck all to do with this.
How is that not honest? The clue is in the title? They're honest about touring to make money.
Love him or hate him, John lydon is are rarity , a man who has stuck to his principles and Morales throughout his life , you have to respect him for that.
Agreed. Thanks for watching and commenting .
@@ScottishTeeVee
Your welcome mate.
@@aboutthemetal8783 did he though? He constantly says hes honest but he lies a lot. Constantly talks about money and then says he never did it for the money lol.. He's entertaining enough though.
He would hate me saying this but he's actually really similar to his (partly) creative mother Viv Westwood. They both talk a lot of nonsense mixed in with some sense...and both are authentic in a slightly arrogant way
John is afreemason ...so was mclaren .....viv westwood ......sid vicious ...all strange characters ......
He has been true to himself his whole life, never arse licked or tried to appease anyone, tells it as it is...I like that
Except he did reform the Pistols a few times. But he’s a legend.
You've got to have been around at the time and have an emotional attachment to the man to see him as anything other than a fat, self-promoting hypocrit
@@spinach-colour-joey6776 there’s some truth in that but, as you say, I was 14 at the time so he’s always there for me
@@spinach-colour-joey6776 Agreed.
he is brill 😘
We don't have rock stars like John Lydon anymore. Nowadays you wouldn't even be allowed to go on TV to say these things. But every word is the truth.
That's because everything is owned by huge corporate conglomerates that despise creativity, risk taking, and controversy.
@@mattpurvis9873 why tho
you dont need to hate and discourage creativity and controversy to make money
thank god we don't, he's famous for saying 'Ever get the feeling you've been cheated?' at the end of the last pistols concert, he carried on doing it all through his career, he never stopped, lydon does what's best for lydon
I’ve huge respect for Lydon - one of the best. I’ve never held it against him for getting The Pistol’s back together for tours. We all have to make a living. What else is he going to do? And when he did the butter adverts - that was to fund the recording of an album by Pil. He’s not exactly rich like Mick Jagger.
He is an honest man, but he has always wanted to control the narrative of the Sex Pistols. The recent lawsuit between Steve Jones, Paul Cook and himself was a low point for sure. Their forthcoming show is based on Jones book, who’s point of view is just as valid as Lydon’s.
Lydon personifies the word “difficult”, but any man who stands by his wife when she has alzheimers is alright by me.
I’ve not seen this interview before, probably because Jonathan Ross gets on my nerves lol.
Thank you for this.
yes
Then you're an idiot.
If you think that taking a stance on any political problem involves staring into a camera like a vision-impaired imbecile is anything other than a money-making tactic, then you're a half-headed clown.
PS that "lady's part", Lydon, agreeing with you can be safely ignored.
@@macdeluxe733
Could you please explain that again in English? Lol
Sure he's standing by his wife Nora, but he would stand stronger by her side if he didn't still drink too much booze, smoke cigarettes and eat mostly junk food (he's admitted all of that in recent videos). And Lydon is not an honest man, he's an open man. Mostly he has peddled BS his entire life.
@@dmerls8571
There is truth there - unfortunately. There is an article in the NME today where Steve Jones and Paul Cook have reacted to his appearance on Good morning Britain. I believe them - but I think it’s important to realize the pressure Lydon is under right now - his wife Nora is literally dying in front of his eyes. That will fuck anyone up - it’s important to have empathy for people who are struggling, and Lydon is struggling. Anyone who has had a loved one suffering from Alzheimer’s will know this. That’s why I give Lydon the benefit of the doubt. Just because I think he is honest doesn’t mean I think he is always in the right. Cut the guy some slack - he deserves that at least.
2:00. No one has the guts. Cue Nirvana a year later
Totally respect this man for looking after his wife he's a genuine man i saw him in my home town 2 plus years ago he was great 😁
Hell of a man. He should have been listened to a long time ago. Say no more......
“Nothing can be loved or hated unless it is first understood.” ― Leonardo da Vinci.
Johnnys interviews are always fascinating and funny .
I just find it amazing how many white English performers like Lydon and Morrissey who were such progressives in the 80s and 90s became conservatives in the 2010s-2020s with ties to white supremacist parties.
Ask yourself, did they change. Or did the world around them?
@@hexaarmortaga9957
In Morrissey's case, he definitely changed.
He went from "If it's not love then it's the bomb that will bring us together" and lampooning the Right in the UK to preaching "England for the English", taking shots at Sadiq Khan for his accent, and referring to Chinese people as a "subspecies".
To his credit, he doesn't lean as far to the right as Trump, whom he calls a "scourge".
I've always liked John. Says what he means and means what he says.
A walking contradiction
Lydon does what's best for Lydon, his latest uk tour ticket sales aren't doing so well so he makes a bigoted comment about immigrants that gets blasted all over the media... ticket sales are up. He only cares about one person and that's himself, he doesn't give a crap about people like you as long as you keep falling for his lies and giving him your money
‘ I might be right ……..I might be wrong ‘. Naked and interesting period of soul searching post punk years. There’s an honesty about John that you can’t deny.
Guile Rotten
He's like me now a old man and the more I see of him the more I like. Like someone said he's a national treasure.

Defo one of the best British albums ever like
he's lovely, I love JL. he's still the same - clear no BS - and just himself. john's dedication to his beautiful wife is inspiring.
Six years later the Pistols reformed.😅
But I can't even criticise John for contradicting himself or going back on his word because John does whatever John wants to do. And that's the true spirit of punk....no rules and no "you can't do that" .
I totally understand why some people do not care for him but I personally adore the guy and always will.
Right. How many times have the Who gone on the "farewell" tour?

And then goes around and claims that the BBC banned him, when _in point of fact_ he was *_never_* banned by said company.
Yeah, such an likeable dude wasn’t he! Told the truth & got shafted!!! Well at least he didn’t get Sid’s sh*t-show! ✌️😇
I love John and I love the Pistols, but it turns out he did repeat himself a few years after this recording.
Sorry I have 💯 respect for lydon but having a dig at the acid house scene not having no guts etc , is a complete understatement . That scene started illegally, defied alot of breaking down social barriers , government laws, anti Thatcher , so have a think ole Jonny boy Never taking Risks🤔 I don't think so, but we still loves ya fella.
That was just typical pop bullshit attitude. When he was at the forefront of punk he slagged off the Beatles, when new wave and acid house came out he slagged that off too. Every generation thinks their own time was the best

Nothing describes that individual better at that particular juncture in time, the late 70's to mid 80's, than 'Eraserhead' which even today has never been fully interpreted the same by any one individual; that beautifully repulsive painting hanging in the corner of the gallery that just causes you to sit and stare, mouth agape... real art! He outed Jimmy Savile at the time and knew what he was at. The establishment basically censored him for it. A disgrace.
He did no such thing and PiL were performing "Death disco" on Top of the pops in 1979, the year after the BBC supposedly banned him! The whole BBC interview is out there if anybody doubts what I say.
No he didn’t,sorry but you’re just jumping on the bandwagon without actually listening to the interview. He just said Savile was up to seediness, that could have meant all sorts of things, could have meant he was into orgys or a homosexual, sex and drug parties or yes into young boys etc . Seediness doesn’t actually mean being a peodophile it can mean many many things. He never actually said he was a nonce who was interfering with kids and he wasn’t banned by the BBC after that interview as PIL appeared on TOTPS .

It's very easy to disprove this if you just do a little research rather than taking LIEdon at his word. PiL performed "Death disco" on Top of the pops in 1979. . . the year after his being "banned". Neither did he explicitly accuse SIR Jimmy Savile of being a "nonce".
@@MikeD-bu6hr Do you not consider it more concerning that rather than one person being responsible for the cover up of the satanic SIR "Jimmy's" activities, the whole of the BBC's hierarchy, over several decades, were complicit in ensuring it was all kept hushed up until he was "safely" dead?

Considering hes saying music in 1990 is mediocre and nobody has any guts, the dance music and rap that was thriving around this time was more subversive and creative than anything the Sex Pistols ever did tbh. Lets be honest the Sex Pistols were utter shite, people might wear the shirts and say they like Johnny but who TF actually sits down and listens to a Sex Pistols album frequently? they were rubbish.
John Lydon has spent his whole career benefiting from media coverage yet he's always attacking them. His fame and career wouldn't have reached the 80s without the undue coverage of his every outfit and silly comment. Somehow, to this day he considers himself working class. The last time he was working class was in the 70s and he was on the dole.
He's not the only person to consider himself working class when he's now anything but. It's a pity the media always ask him the same questions about the same things. His autobiography is an interesting read. Being married to an heiress also negates his claim to be working class.
