The Pass is Blocked and We’re Running Low on Fuel

  • We're pushing on down the Pony Express route in Utah and Nevada. When trying to traverse one of our last mountain passes we found it to be impassable. Spring time is on the way but there's still plenty of snow in the mountains. We were forced to turn around and find another route. At this point we were running low on fuel and just hoping we would make it to a station. There's a lot of beautiful country in Nevada and Utah and we hope to get back to explore even more of it one day.

Paper maps … no downloading, no power issues. At 71, I grew up in the age of paper maps, but am perfectly comfortable with GPS in my truck. However, I keep my paper maps around as backup.

I have to go from western NC by TN, GSMNP area… alllll the way over to the coast of NC soon. Im dreading it, but have to pick up my daughter ,who’s riding down from Ny with a friend, and that’s their destination. Didn’t sound like a big deal to my daughter for mom to come get her across the state of NC , but it is! Because of mountains that you have to go around, major cities, the Mapquest will only take you two ways. All of which, have me going through several Major cities and interstate the entire way. I can’t do that. I just can’t drive that any longer! Charlotte for example is like atlanta . Anyway, im ordering an Atlas. I always carried one, but just don’t go anywhere anymore. It reminded me that I need to be keeping one in my vehicle anyway, as I’ve always done. You can get places here with no service. Im going to just meander over and it will likely take me 8-9 hours instead of 6 hours, but I don’t care. Im just going to make a road trip out of it and take my time. Might even stop and spend the night if I feel like it. Yeah, I’m agreement about carrying an Atlas.

They're not mass-manufactuered anymore, and the amount of funding put into them to ensure they are 100% up to date is almost non-existent these days. Paper maps have largely died as a concept both in usefulness and in availability.

Rand McNally atlas, has state by state (in book form) Amazon. Truckers still keep them. Get them while ya can.

Having a paper map can help a little, but they're just not reliable anymore.

Better than NOT having one. Having zero.

Could be, or some sort of storage building for mining supplies. Either way the old structures are always interesting!

Half a tank in your trailer tank if it’s still there with the semi truck drain line for extra fuel. 40-80 extra pounds up to 10 gallons.

You're lucky to have your Sarah. I'd say she does a pretty good job driving your rig. I am not good at riding shotgun either! ;) As for the trouble makers in the back? Kids are gonna be kids! I know I gave my parents a run for their money! Ha-ha! You know you wouldn't have it any other way! It is wonderful that you get to travel with your wife and kids this way. Especially when the kids are young. They will remember this for a lifetime! This great nation of ours offers beauty at every turn. Glad you are enjoying our neck of the woods here out West. The desert can be very peaceful, and beautiful also. Good decision to turn around. Hard choice. Mighta been able to make it. But not worth the chance of getting stuck. Especially with your family onboard. Not sure your set up. Do you keep a few jerry cans of fuel onboard for emergencies? Always better safe than sorry. Thanks for sharing. Enjoy seeing your videos and adventures. Jim Gillespie. Reno, NV. :)

Thanks, we are very blessed indeed. We've rarely needed spare fuel on past trips, we usually drive a different suburban that gets a little bit better gas mileage. We have a plan for carrying extra fuel in the future though

@@trove1312 One thing about out West. In Nevada, Utah, Arizona, sometimes fuel is a long way off. Which you obviously already know! Ha-ha! Hope the rest of your trip is safe and has a few less snags! :)

@@trove1312 usually fuel is cheaper out west. Etc. If your trailer has its orgional fuel tank you could fuel where its cheaper. Using the oem sending unit figure out if its capable of being used as a transfer pump. Or modify the sending unit to work with a transfer pump set up hidden iin a box by your firewall.
You could fuel at will with the right hose nozzle set up.
Might be spendy just depends on cost to benifit ratio.
      I have a 8100 4.75 mpg when towing....11 mpg when not.

If silicon rtv not sealing well you could try making a paper style seal gasket from a Kellogg's box

I learned a long time ago when traveling the back ways in Utah and Nevada to carry extra fuel with me. I have a 5.4 gas with a 26 gal. tank. Typically 450 miles to a tank, towing a 3 horse heavy Logan trailer, I'm lucky to get 10 miles down hill, 200 per tank. You seem mostly prepared for anything {tools} like I am...but not fuel? Despite a few setbacks, are you enjoying your trip? P. s. I had 7 kids... lol. Now its horses and dogs.

We have plans for that on our main vehicle, we just have to be a little more careful when we don't have it.

On the "trailer" , you could use a NASCAR style old school oil pump pulley assembly that they turned off the drive shaft. Use the pulley assembly to an alternator off the yoke and constant charge your 12 volt battery (s). As long as it's moving, you're charging.

I've considered it, figuring out the proper ratios so the speed would be enough to generate could be fun. Also the part where that all gets submerged during water crossings kind of makes me not want to try it. From what I know alternators don't like be submerged.

We were prepared, garmin in reach for emergency communications, enough food for a comfortable week, water filter for emergencies, first aid kit, plenty of clothes and sleeping bags to stay warm. It wouldn’t necessarily be fun but we could ride it out for quite a while in an emergency. That’s also why we turned back when we did.
