  • Wired2Fish staffer McKeon Roberts unveils the sleeper tactic of pitching micro crankbaits in the shallows for aggressive springtime and early summer crappies.
    Like bass, crappies have large mouths well-equipped for eating big meals. Small crankbaits and jerkbaits are an excellent crappie option when you're seeing baitfish fry darting around -- this typically coincides with late spring and early summer, and baits like the Rapala Ultra Light Shad do an excellent job resembling natural forage.
    It seems half nuts, but small trebled baits fish amazing clean through reeds while getting cover-locked crappie to lift out of their haunts and eat. Mckeon discusses how to make precise pitch casts to wads of fish while controlling the sink rate of the bait, and how to work it through cover with minimal fouling. This same tactic works well when targeting crappies relating to submerged brush piles, drop-offs and even scatted along grass flats.

    I love using tiny crankbaits! And micro-crankbait fishing was one of my favorite videos I filmed this spring as well. Caught a million bluegills, some crappies, and even a couple bass on them in a couple hours at my local pond.

    Thats indeed one very small lure . Looks like money for crappie and panfishing lure . Man you can really work that bait in a few ways pretty nice overall . Great information as always , love how you said catching them off beds is a little Immoral :)

      @@mikehebert7936 yeah I'm not into bed fishing, sometimes you can't help getting one off a bed from the Bank. But I always release Bass exactly where I caught it.

      @@DMVWhiskerKing They'll usually go back to the bed after being released eventually. I don't fish the beds directly either. Fun time to catch them though.

    Thats a great idea, using that deeper diving crank as a "stationary" jerk bait!

      It just hangs! Something crappies often love so they don't have to swim far for it.

    Change out the treble hooks with single inline size 8 hooks, catch just as many fish, and reduce hang-ups. If the bait is very small, I just use one single hook. The best part about this is a single hook seldom shakes lose and those little treble hooks are pain to unhook. Besides, if you are releasing the fish it reduces injuries to fish. Those little crankbaits aren’t cheap.

    @ 2:48 what does "barehook a plastic" mean?

    • @Wired2Fish
      @Wired2Fish  Год назад

      A small crappie plastic curly tail grub or tube can be fished with a bare hook. This makes the plastic light so it sinks slowly, which crappie prefer, but can't be casted as well as these micro crankbaits.

    What lb.braid backing you used to spoon on before the nanobraid..thx

    • @Wired2Fish
      @Wired2Fish  5 лет назад +1

      For backing, I just use whatever spools of monofilament I have laying around that are too low to fill a reel. Braid tends to slip on the spool whereas mono will bite on the spool which makes for a good backing. On a smaller spool like this, I try to keep the backing light as to not take up much space on the spool. So I would use a 6-8lb mono backing and then the 6lb NanoBraid and then a 2-3ft long 6-8lb fluorocarbon leader. (8lb for fishing around these reeds otherwise 4-6lb fluoro) All these changes in lines require a line to line knot. Of which I use a modified albright knot.
