They have almost the same plot- a suicidal widower wallows in his regrets while the world threatens to steal his little remaining dignity and independence. A son-surrogate who triggers the old man's traumas intrudes upon his life, demanding action. Then the widower is forced to figuratively or literally give up his life to protect the son-surrogate from an external threat that is also somehow connected to his trauma and regrets.
When describing how Dragon Hakus mouth would look Miyazaki learned that his animators had no idea what a dog's mouth looks like. He was flabbergasted. They went out with camcorders to record dog mouths. True story.

Don’t be too put off. Yeah, it has some dark and gross-out moments, but it’s also one of the most genuine and beautiful animated films of all time. I watched it when I was only around 10, but the dark moments only served to make the joy and creativity even better.
Well, color me completely clueless...I just got through reading the Wikipedia entry on the film, and suffice it to say that it will be here tomorrow (!) and I'll watch it over the weekend.
