  • Director of Instruction at the TruGolf Academy Jon Watts talks you through how to start your downswing correctly. Don't pull the arms, allow then to drop while adding some rotation of the body for more consistent and straighter golf shots.

    This is great. Something was missing in my swing. The hands dropping then rotate is a great feeling. Whips the club through at bottom of swing. I was bringing club up and trying to kill the ball. I just started 8 months ago and this really helped me. Fabulous for beginners to understand

    So I would hit wedges fine but when I got to 9 iron I would start the shank it. Then I made sure to try and drop the hands. Or “hands to my right foot” and seem to stop shaking it. I think with the longer clubs my hands would get away

    • @TruGolfAcademy
      @TruGolfAcademy  Год назад

      Good as a feel of moving too far from the body, obviously they have to move out as you rotate. Just make sure not pulling hands down and cupping the lead wrist (opening the face)
      Other big reason for shanks would be hips moving towards the ball (early extending)

    • @chachifeere
      @chachifeere Год назад

      @@TruGolfAcademy I don’t think I early extending , been working on that for a while. It’s something in the downswing, like swinging across the ball

  • @thegamingrelish9272
    @thegamingrelish9272 6 месяцев назад +1

    My situation at the moment is the opposite I start my lower body to early and it causes the club to get stuck behind me which then forces me to early extend and hit the ball inconsistently.

    • @TruGolfAcademy
      @TruGolfAcademy  5 месяцев назад

      Focus on pushing down into the lead foot and moving your lead hip further behind you. Starting low half is good but your pressure will be going into toes and hips towards the ball 👍🏻

  • @jordangourley3955
    @jordangourley3955 5 месяцев назад

    If you hit the ball with your right hip it’s impossible to hit it fat unless you have tour grade flexibility. Try it. Put your right hip on the ball and reach back and see if you can even touch the ground behind the ball while maintaining an impact position. It’s difficult.

    Hi John, I love that feel of almost waiting for the club on the downswing. Could I just ask when do you change from the arms dropping to rotating the body? Is it hands just outside rear thigh? Cheers.

    • @TruGolfAcademy
      @TruGolfAcademy  2 года назад

      The reality is rotation will have already started but the feel is different. Aim to feel the arms drop in the very start of the transition to just below lead arm parallel to the ground.

    Is this the same feel for driver

    • @TruGolfAcademy
      @TruGolfAcademy  5 месяцев назад +1

      Yeah absolutely, hands would generally be a little further from body with the driver at set up but more rotational forces are going to throw the hands out in front of you. For anyone more over the top, they need to feel more drop before rotate 👍🏻

    Could you please explain the following which is so puzzling to me:
    When you're swinging towards the ball, does your brain try to
    1. swing the clubhead to a point in front of, a little outside, and below the ball (ie the low point of the swing), with sweet spot contact
    2. aim to deliver the sweet spot to contact a certain point on the ball, with an arc of a certain descending angle, or
    3. another target or path which you focus on?
    I try to do 1., because I think that's the easiest for my brain to understand. If that is the correct way to do it, then when the ball position is moved because we are hitting a different club, should we aim for another low point based on the new ball position and using a slightly different path, or do we stick to hitting the original target in the ground (which was for the first ball)? And should the low point's distance from the ball and depth in the ground be different for each club? And how in heaven's name could anyone get it right?

    • @TruGolfAcademy
      @TruGolfAcademy  2 года назад

      Wow that’s a lot to focus on. I don’t do any so not sure I could help. I think the ball gets more in the way of the club on a arc’d path.
      The low point would be similar with each iron but ball position varies. Low point should be under lead chest. Would be a logger further back with the driver as your upper body tilts away from the target in the downswing.
      I hope that helps a little? If your contact point thought helps you, stick with it!

    In the backswing lead arm is bending. Have been taught to keep this straight. When I keep it straight I’m more tense and then start to come over the top. With your drill, once we get the club path correct is it recommended to try and keep lead arm straight? Great video!

    • @TruGolfAcademy
      @TruGolfAcademy  7 месяцев назад +1

      Thanks Michael. A little bend is okay, you just don’t want to lose all width. I can’t keep it dead straight as broke the arm as a kids some can’t due to tight shoulders.

      @@TruGolfAcademy, yes it’s a drill I’m using, and will continue to use. My problem is during a round my old shoulder dominant swing has a habit of coming back. So it’s a constant battle for me. When I do it right, I wish I could just bottle it. Thanks for the enquiry.
      Regularly go back over your videos, mostly ‘ The only way to stop a slice’ and never come over the top.

    Jon, I have commented before on your videos. Excellent videos! My problem is I get stuck in finding positions! I become a hitter and not a swinger. My body stops at impact or I lunge at the ball and my left arm breaks down after impact! I admit that I love to tinker with my swing while watching various RUclips golf videos. I would love to be consistent but it may not be in my DNA. For example one day I work to keep the handle going up with the left shoulder going back and away. The following day I work on trying to hit ball then turf contact and becoming too steep. Guess I suffer from Analysis Paralysis! Also DOG (Delusions of Grandeur)! Any advice?

  • @Rich-in6ds

    I like your content but this one confused me a little. Drop the hands down by feeling like you leave them up? I have very fast hip rotation which, even though you have some separation, drags my arms and club head out in front of me too early in the downswing. I desperately need to get the hands dropping down into a nice, low delivery position but as you mentioned, it’s easy to fall into the trap of pulling them down and steepening the shaft. If I just think about leaving them up, my fast hips will drag me over the top eventually.

    • @TruGolfAcademy
      @TruGolfAcademy  2 года назад +2

      The feeling of leaving arms up, can help some players get out of pulling down. They will fall as the the body rotates and pressure is applied down into the lead foot.
