I’ve been a rush fan for over 40 years and Natural Science is for me the pinnacle of their artistry.. what a privilege it’s been to be alive when these three guys were putting together such an amazing catalogue of music.

The first time I listened to Permanent Waves in 82. I must have put the needle back 5 times listening to this first time and promptly got up in the morning to relisten. But then again this was common occurence with at least a dozen songs when I got into their back catalogue.

Every Alex solo is an emotional adventure. Especially the last on this song. And the last part of the solo, the dexterity, the phrasing. Alex at his best.

Agree totally. Alex's second solo at the end when that last note bends and soars has always given me chills.

This song shows how far ahead of the times Rush was both lyrically and musically. This complex piece of music is something that Dream Theater would go on to do and the lyrics are still relevant today, maybe even more so then in 1980.

Natural Science is my absolute favorite Rush song live. The first time I heard this song in concert my mind was blown. Alex did an interview a few weeks ago. He was asked of all the Rush songs you played live over your 40 plus years, which one the hardest to play. Without hesitation Alex said Natural Science. Y'all nailed this song every time. ❤‍🔥🤘

This song started out as an English feeling medieval piece called 'Sir Gawain & the Green Knight' but they felt that it didn't fit in with this album's more concise modern feel. So they abandoned it but used some of the musical parts to construct another song which became 'Natural Science'

Given moving pictures exploding them to the masses large, and i given i saw rush in their prime from 1976 until presto, permanent waves was, for me, the last old school killer rush tour. And natural science was the highlight of it. The last time they played their a list barnburners.
Go look at the setlists for permanent waves tour, before fame forced them to be radio friendly greatest hits with moving pix and beyond.

It is the only time that they recorded with another band. The band is Max Webster who you should definitely check out and the song is called Battle scar. Might be one word not sure.

@@mr.eggplant866 Probably because how often does Lifeson come up in conversation when it comes to greatest guitarists. Almost never sadly. It's always the usual suspects. Hendrix, Van Halen, Clapton, Page, Slash, Wylde, Rhoads, etc. It's less being a classical musician not listening to Mozart, and moreso a classical musician not hearing about artists such as Gustav Mahler or Richard Strauss.
