Wait until you see what is under this bad paint job! MCM Facebook Marketplace find!

  • Stripping paint isn't my favorite thing to do, but it is so satisfying when you find an incredible wood grain under it! I think this super thick paint actually protected the wood on this MCM Facebook Marketplace find because when I stripped it there was no missing veneer. That is rare for the age of this piece.
I used Klean strip stripper, but it was coming off marginally well. I had to do another round in conjunction with acetone and fine steel wool to fully remove the paint.
I used a dental pick to get into the small crevices.
After the paint was removed, I moved on to sanding. I sanded through all the grits over the entire dresser and drawers using 80, 120, and 180. That was a long process. Time lapses always makes it seem fast, but trust me, it wasn't!
I used a wood conditioner on the entire piece before applying a gel stain. I used Nutmeg by General Finishes. After applying, I let it sit for a few minutes and then wiped back the excess. When it was dry, I applied a high performance topcoat in satin.
In hindsight, I wish I had used a hard wax/oil for a softer finish. I think the satin made the finish look a little plastic, but my client loved it so I guess it's okay.

Soooooo pretty. I agree that a hard wax finish would be better, but it is still stunning!

Thankfully, the buyer loved it but I just know the hard wax oil would have been much better 😢

Immediately cover with plastic and wait about an hour. It should be really bubbly.

Yes, I do that more now. The Klean strip is so good I usually don't even need the wrap but I needed it on this piece!

What a beautiful piece, love the new hardware! I just did a piece with nutmeg gel stain because you recommend it, such a great color, beautiful application (I even like the smell of it, weird, I know.) I use that jig, it's awesome, but I wasn't using it properly. Thank you for the tutorial, much easier than those directions. The finish is beautiful.

That is so funny you mentioned the smell because I love the smell 🤣
It’s kinda sweet. 😊 Nutmeg is such a lovely color. I especially like it combined with Antique Walnut or Brown Mahogany 🤩

Don’t let the stripper ever dry. That will make the paint dry back to the piece.

Put plastic over the pieces while the stripper is on, it works so much better, leave it on a bit longer. This turned out great!

Love that you use both right and left hands. I'm ambidextrous and find it saves time. The wood is lovely. Why did anyone paint that?

Making your drawer holes way to complicated. Much easier ways to do this. Your piece turned out stunning!

You might want to try pulling the dental tool, rather than pushing with it. (Point down, pulling the paint out, is more efficient than the way you used it.).

I really like Osmo Polyx in satin. It's easy to apply, it's low luster, but it's a super durable finish. Rubio Monocoat and General Finishes also have hard wax oils, but I haven't tried them yet.

In working to get the black paint off with your dental tool couldn’t you have used acetone and a tooth brush?
