- After many weeks of failure, just before the contest was to fizzle out to the embarrassment of producers and sponsors, a contestant finally wins the Beat The Clock Super Bonus of $64,000, September 14, 1956.
Today I’m watching this exactly 65 years later! Wow!😮
$64,000 back then is a little over half a million dollars today.
Their kids get to go to college now. I'm happy for this sweet couple won all that money.
$605,195.29 in 2019 money.
In '56 the tax rate on $64,000 would be near 50%
in 2023, it's now over $717,000
This had to be the highest amount ever won on a game show at the time
Maybe for a single event or stunt. I think the highest amount accumulated, over several shows by a contestant was well over $250,000 by some guy named Teddy Nadler. I mean for back then in the big money game show era of the 50's. I'm sure it has been broken since.
I remember seeing this clip on CBS tournament “Gameshow Marathon.”
As of 7/23/2018 the $64,000 equivalent would be $588,714.03 today.. WOW!
Well over $700000 today's money
64 likes. I dare not leave another.
Bern Bennett was classic at 8:34
Don't know about you, but I cracked up when Bern said it.
Almost $639,000 today.
My parents💖
They're very good looking people. He says he was a printer, which my father was also, but my father never won $64,000 on a TV show.
STOP PLAYIN'!!! These are YOUR PARENTS?!! Seriously??? I was HOLLERIN' when Pops got it!
He practiced a lot! He built a similar model at home.
More like the $64,000 stunt before the $64,000 question
Who's grandparents are these? Does this impact your life today? Just curious.
This couple are my parents and it did impact my life.
Susan Fontana Oh Wow! That’s so awesome. I’m so glad for you and your family.
Don't Bill know it's against the law,, 2 laundry money,,,
If you have the rest of this ep, could you post it? :) TIA
I have it on DVD!
The stunts are hysterical
On a September 14, 1956 episode of Beat The Clock, here is the big $64,000 win.
A WASHER AND DRYER WORTH 500.00 DOLLARS.
WHO IS THE ANNOUNCER
His name was Bern Bennett.
Bud Collyer who was the original Superman on radio and cartoons
I'm sure the tight producers would have rather given the $64,000 to "Charity"like they mentioned.Yeah, right.
