what I love about bowie's music is that he got so many great and different musicians to produce this fantastic music. A lot of bands end up going stale for 30 years but his stuff is so varied and fresh.
My God I remember hearing this song as child and getting haunted by it, I would start learning English only 10 years after. This song was buried in my mind till decades after, in the internet era it would re-emerge as the crazy, beautiful, dark, feet-moving, hitting wonder that is.
wow, 6 Years already, your guitars, pedals and discography has improved a lot since then, but your teaching style didn't change so much, good ol' Carl Brown knows how to teach in a way we can understand and learn fast, that's pretty epic
Really enjoy these chords, they are so great and sound so good, thank you Carl. Would really love the solos since I can play all this fairly handily...
Please make a video for the solos for this song!!!! I can't wait!!!! I love Bowie's songs and will miss him. You do the best job of teaching guitar on youtube. Please do the solos Carl. Your the only one who can teach me the right way.
Anybody else tapping and humming the intro? This was my introduction to David Bowie when I was a lil kid. Like all children I was addicted to mtv and pop radio. Not sure where I heard it first but it definitely made me dance. Thank you David. R.I.P.
Really nice illustration. I have not heard anything really, that resembles what Niles created here. I would have to say Niles is genius in coming up with this jazzy, funk driven, but yet rock'n roll-ish chord structure. Absolutely genius.
Another vote for the solos; and while we're on the subject of Bowie, how 'bout more from his catalog, particularly from Fripp's work on "Heroes" and "Scary Monsters"? In any case, thanks for all of your videos; they're excellent!
Excellent lesson Carl. I'd love you to do SRV's guitar licks version, or even better, the album version. Thank you for doing these Bowie lessons. Fantastic.
super cool vid me think da chords be Bbmin11 (b3 implied) Eb7/Bb (11option) Gb6 The voice leading is a "top" two note melody of Eb and Db. The note Eb of the Gb6 chord implies an F7 chord (which is the V7 of Bbmin and can be slipped into the progression) Also, the use of IV7 (Eb7) which is normally IVmin uses the note G which is the important natural 6 of Bb Dorian (a darker minor as used by doors riders on the storm)... man this tune likely had a jazz background writer...wicked cool jazz spread on funk toast.
thanks carl, another great lesson. having the solo lesson as well would be amazing. especially since your srv lessons , like complete' life without you' are best on you tube.
Hi Carl, at 03:23 you say that the chord is a Bm11 but I think you've misread the frets, I get it as a Bb7sus. Thanks for the lesson and hope you get the solos down. 👍
Listen to the very beginning of the Beatles Twist and Shout.Very reminisceent of the opening chords on Lets Dance..right before John kicks in with "Well shake it up baby"
Nice job, thanks! I like to play the 1st and 4th chords of the verse in the 13th position because my fingers fall into place more naturally. I love Nile’s story about creating that progression. He plays David’s original idea which is vastly different, but somehow Nile didn’t get a co-write on it.
@@mickdundee364 Why should he get co-writing on it? He had nowt to do with the writing, he arranged the already written song. Bowie chose Nile Rodgers to co-produce the album and the job that Nile did there is what producers do. You can guarantee he'll have been paid well.
@@paulbentley2216 i was saying he pretty much rewrote the song with how different the chords ended up being from what bowie originally had. either way, it's not that serious
Thank you. Hated all Bowie's stuff until this track. Same happened with Brian Ferry and some others. Later learned that the common factor was Nike Rogers lol.
Since you're doing tributes. Jim Keays, front man for 'Masters Apprentices ' passed about a year half ago. How about a tribute mate? Perhaps "it's because I love you "? Another great lesson Carl. Thanks mate
it looks like it's a Bb dorian, so the key should be G#. But like "embellishment" it uses the low part of a G#9 (F# should not be diatonic with G# major key, right?) after the Bbm6. Am I right?
Really appreciate you doing the video, Carl. Niles is just such a clever mofro! Incredibly tasty little chord voicings. But you Google guitar chords for this and what you find is completely bogus.
The funny thing is Nile would have probably played those parts the way you did here, or at least very similarly, if it hadn't been for the anti disco upheaval in the late 70s/early 80s. The dude was literally terrified of doing the waka chaka thing on his guitar because some dweeb music critic decided it was no longer cool to do it.
Do the solos please!!!!! spanish fly on electric by evh Hey Carl!!! Could you do some tutorial of City and Colour? Specially the song The Girl?? thanks!
One of the craziest songs ever to make it to the top of the lists.
Sophisticated and smooth as hell.
Truly a wonder.
what I love about bowie's music is that he got so many great and different musicians to produce this fantastic music. A lot of bands end up going stale for 30 years but his stuff is so varied and fresh.
Yes he remained extremely creative till the very end. It is a incredibly diverse catalog of music that he left behind.
And this is a Nile Rogers production.
Très Chic!👌
My God

The only lesson on here showing the correct intro. Well done Carl.
Brilliant, so fun to play once you've got your sound right, hope to see more Bowie songs.

Another brilliant tutorial from Carl the Master!

A very nice chords for a great song reminds me my young age when all were nice and easy I love it that song
Excellent lesson Carl. I'd love you to do SRV's guitar licks version, or even better, the album version. Thank you for doing these Bowie lessons. Fantastic.
That's more my comfort zone. Just jump on the distortion pedal lol

Really beautiful sounding chords.
Nice job, thanks! I like to play the 1st and 4th chords of the verse in the 13th position because my fingers fall into place more naturally.

yeah it's crazy he didn't AT LEAST get a co-write because what Bowie played for him vs what Nile came up with can scarcely be considered the same
@@mickdundee364 Why should he get co-writing on it? He had nowt to do with the writing, he arranged the already written song. Bowie chose Nile Rodgers to co-produce the album and the job that Nile did there is what producers do. You can guarantee he'll have been paid well.
