    Them announcing Switch 2 being backwards compatible also helps the current switch. They have so many big Switch games coming out in the next year, but some people might have held off on buying them if they thought they would be obsolete in the next year. So if people know that the games they buy now will be playable on they next system they wouldn't wait.

    There was a brief period of time where companies were fighting hard to kill this feature. For a while, Xbox was the only brand that championed it and used it as a means to get back some of the consumer trust they lost at the beginning of the 8th console gen. These days all three major players have backwards compatibility on their machines, and I couldn't be happier.

      I don't think companies realize how big of a deal this is among parents. If you own the previous console, it means you can sell it to help pay for the next console (I know game collectors just winced but bear with me), and if you don't own the previous console, it means double the library, some of which may be flooding bargain bins and second-hand sellers soon.

    • @i-Sparki
      @i-Sparki 3 дня назад +21

      I find this a strange thing to say for Nintendo, who have been doing backwards compatibility since the GBA supplanted the GB/GBC while being able to play all those games. The Switch (aside their old cartridge based consoles) is the exception and that's more due to the fact they're using cartridges for its games while the Wii U uses discs. Unless they sold an accessory disk drive to plug into the base, there wasn't a practical way for backwards compat. to exist between the Wii U and the Switch. It would've been nice to have said option but alas, we didn't get it.
      The Switch and Switch sequel? Easy- it's likely to be how they did it with the DS and 3DS. Just add a little notch to the new console's cartridges and there you go.

    • @BeezeeChutter
      @BeezeeChutter 3 дня назад +8

      @@i-Sparki Also the switch isn’t a 1-to-1 with the WiiU. For a console to be backwards compatible it has to work for ALL the games right? And while it may have been possible that the Switch could’ve been backwards compatible with some or _maybe_ even a lot of games I highly doubt it could’ve handled all of them. The Switch and WiiU are different enough formats that I don’t think it would’ve worked.
      Like look at the history of Nintendo’s backwards compatible consoles for example: GameBoy to GameBoy Advance, literally a more powerful GameBoy so no problems. GameBoy Advance to DS, same thing it was a more powerful GBA with a bonus second screen. DS to 3DS, second verse same as the first. Wii to WiiU, literally used the controllers of the Wii officially! It’s no wonder, with this trend in mind, that the Switch was not compatible with the WiiU but the Switch 2 will be compatible with the Switch. They could add something to the Switch 2 but as long as they don’t take anything away that would make backwards compatibility with the original Switch difficult then it makes sense.

    • @MLennholm
      @MLennholm 3 дня назад +6

      @@i-Sparki It had more to do with the fact that the Wii U and Switch use completely different system architectures (PowerPC vs ARM) which makes them technically incompatible without some kind of emulation or virtualization, which would make the Wii U games run like crap. That's why Switch playing digital copies of Wii U games isn't a thing even in the homebrew scene, it's just not technically feasible. It's also why all the "Deluxe" editions released for Switch required development and couldn't just be moved over.

    • @lackofcheese344
      @lackofcheese344 3 дня назад +8

      You're all forgetting the biggest reason: The WiiU needs 2 screens.
      Even with a disk drive and some sort of emulation or such, you just can't play a lot of the games without the second screen gamepad.
      Good luck trying to play ZombiU for example, without an inventory or lockpicking.

    It's probably easy to make performance patches. But there is one thing that sticks out: frame rate. A 30 fps game, made to run at 60, can start showing bugs and misbehaviors, depending on how the game logic was written. So everything needs to be retested and some stuff may need adjusting. That's the tricky part.

      That's mostly how I am now. I used to be bad for buying games I'll never have time to play. So many old Gamecube, PS2, PS3, and Wii games in storage I'll never get to now. But now, I buy the game right before I plan to play it. And I make sure to finish it before starting a new one. Only exception is when I see a game that I know plan to play on sale. I'll buy it then and wait. Which still happens too often on Playstation but not too often with Nintendo. So I will have several games purchased I haven't played yet. lol But I'm pretty certain I will. And if I'm really not enjoying a game, then I'll stop.
      That's assuming "backlog" only refers to games purchased that haven't been played. When I refer to my backlog, I also include games I haven't purchased but still want to play. And that list is really big. So many great games I want to play but probably will never have time for.

I like that when I jump on the new system I can still play my library on it and not have to be swapping around two platforms. I love that about my PS5, I will love that about my Switch 2. I love classic games so much as is and this console generation has conditioned me to seldom care about the (pitiful stream) of new releases, so these machines to me are convenient ways to play the games I already love with the added bonus of new titles every once in a while, too.
    I got hundreds of unplayed classics on my backlog, I find chipping through that more satisfying than putting all my attention on whatever new titles are releasing that I (likely) don't care much about. That'll always be my main focus when I am playing video games, anything to make that process nicer is always welcome

    Hey Arlo, I'm the person you were talking about in the video. I have no backlog on the Switch. I buy the game, play it, complete it and then wait for the next Nintendo title to release. In the rare case that a game isn't completed, it can only be because it unfortunately didn't click with me on some level and I would have no plan to ever go back to it.

    I think the thing that put some legitimate doubt in people about the Switch 2 being backwards compatible was the rumors that a remaster of Breath of the Wild was in the works for the new console. I'm glad that Nintendo was able to assuage those doubts, but now I have a new concern. If Nintendo is truly working on a remaster of BoTW for the Switch 2, how will owners of the OG version be affected? Will they release the updates for the remaster for free and allow current owners to have all the benefits, or will they pull a Sony and force consumers to pay an additional fee to upgrade their already purchased copy of the game to the remastered version? It's something to think about at least.

    • @purelogarithm
      @purelogarithm 2 дня назад +3

      I think the more likely answer is that there isn't a remaster of Breath of the wild. People have been wrong before about things Nintendo has been working on before.

    I always figured backwards compatibility was a given since the vast majority of nintendo systems and pretty much all the handhelds had it. My concern was that they might do what they did with virtual console, and not carry over anyone's digital purchases of games (even if every game that could be played on switch is available on switch 2). But hearing them announce this ahead of time gives me the confidence to say that this won't be the case.

  • @XionSteel
    @XionSteel 3 дня назад +1

    I believe they mentioned it because there was a bit of a down trend in their stocks, though the reason for the downtrend is speculative, the subtle announcement for backwards compatibility bumped them back into an upwards trend again. That said, i am looking forward to it now that it's confirmed since i had the same feeling going from ds to 3ds, its just nice to have something more powerful to play your games on, even if there is no update to have them run beyond their usual 30fps. Everything else i believe is also carrying over from accounts, to purchases, to apps... It's pretty much just going to be the Switch environment but stronger (and hopefully more customizable).

    Previous Nintendo consoles actually didn’t use emulation for backwards compatibility, but a different method called “virtualization”, which is a great deal easier than emulation. It basically just has the previous system built inside it to run games from there. Virtualization is how the Wii was able to perfectly run GameCube games, how the DS could run GBA games, etc. So I imagine that the Switch successor would be able to virtualize the Switch as well.
    I learned that from Tech Rules.

    Anyway, this greatly increases the chance that the new console will continue the Nintendo tradition of "put in game, play immediately." That's one of Nintendo's biggest advantages in my eyes. I don't have to wait for my game to install after getting it, and then have multi-gigabyte patches on Day 1.

  • @tormentor91

    I think we will see some games get specific patches, but a lot of them will just naturally work better and will likely profit from Nvidia's upscaling that surely will be employed. That way you can get something like Age of Calamity run at a fluid 1080p 60fps without needing to actually change anything in the code.
    But increasing the framerate from a 30fps lock to 60fps would definitely require a patch, that's likely to happen with BotW and TotK.

  • @Stephen-Fox
    @Stephen-Fox 3 дня назад +1

    I typically wait until I'm ready to play a game before I buy it these days...
    As for backwards compatibility, I wasn't actually that worried about it - Nitnendo hasn't been perfect when it comes to it, but it's only systems with radically different form factors from them since the Gamecube that haven't been backwards compatible with their prior systems in that form factor.
    Wii U was backwards compatible with the Wii was backwards compatible with the Gamecube was using discs rather than cartridges
    3ds was backwards compatible with the DS was (prior to the new models at any rate) backwards compatible with the GBA was backwards compatible with the GBC was considered a hardware update rather than a new console by Nintendo.
    As such, as long as the Switch 2 was still using that specific form factor for cartridges, I figured it was going to be backwards compatible with the Switch. Switch 3 to Switch will be less certain.

      @@grthjryrd7552 Bro I have been on PC since I was born. But I have also been on Nintendo since I was like 7. Back in the day the Nintendo DS had free online voice chat in Pokemon Platinum/Heart Gold/Soul Silver/White/Black. Nintendo Wii had massively better legacy services/channels and the Wii U had higher tickrate servers, lower latency, higher quality sensors, and free voice calls/chat despite the WiFi being free. It's entirely fair to say Nintendo has regressed in this aspect.
      For the display side VRR, that is easy if they do a large enough batch (which a console will be) they will basically just give it to them (the manufacturer to Nintendo). Valve wanted to add it to the SD OLED but just didn't get it in on time. I think it's fair to publicly ask for more from NSO and refresh rate if this thing is expected to hold people's attention against competitors

    Back Compatibility confirmed just makes me worry much less about the future console personally. With the Switch I HAD to get it day 1 for BOTW and any future games I wanted, but it was pretty difficult to get a Switch in those early launch months. It was made MUUCH better come the late summer and early fall/holiday season, to the point a lot of people forget the limited launch. With Backwards compatibility I not only don't need to worry about "leaving behind" (not really gonna lose my Switch games/switch but I would turn on the console a lot less) my old catalog but I can also choose to wait the console out a bit if I can't get it for whatever reason and still have a massive catalog at no extra cost.
    Hindsight it's pretty obvious we'd get backwards compatibility, but it being one of the only things we know for sure now has me very excited to see how the console will be revealed.
