Why attaching a grenade launcher to an MP5 isn't that crazy. With firearms expert, Jonathan Ferguson

- Attaching a highly explosive attachment to a short range weapon may at first glance seem like a recipe for disaster. However, for certain applications having such a capability could be of real tactical use and indeed the ISTEC 200 series of launchers did see adoption with different nations during the last two decades of the twentieth century, including UK special forces.

Correction - I did advise in the editing process that the base gun was an MP5A3 - with the burst fire trigger group fitted, it's an A5 as I'm sure some of you will spot :)
Hey Jonathan, dunno if youre aware, but be careful taking off accessories from rifles. according to youtubes new rules its "modifying" a gun, and its now against the rules. Many gun channels have gotten strikes for this. Maybe you know something i dont about you removing the launcher in the video, but i figured id let you know in case you didnt. Would hate for this channel to get a strike.

As a Half-Life fan it warms my heart knowing that an MP5 with a grenade launcher actually does exist.
Malaysian special forces use MP5s with M203s for ship boarding operations.
If I recall correctly, the MP5N+M203PI combo was actually tried by the US military for MOUT back in the late '90s, and the troops in the photos I saw were wearing the urban variant of M81 camo, just like in the HL.
Indeed but it needs to be an MP5-SD to mimic Half-Life to a 100% lol

@@outspokenguy3834 have you ever *tried playing Half Life?*
The fact that Jonathan not only mentions Half-Life, but ALSO mentions the not as well known remake Black Mesa, earns him like...all the bonus points for game nerding from me.
What do you mean? Black Mesa is quite possibly the most well known Half Life fan game
Black Mesa in itself has quite the story when it comes to it's MP5 depiction, with it possibly undergoing more changes than any other of the remake's arsenal (It certainly did as far as public media & game versions, at least).
It's first form took the shape of an MP5 with a MP5K-style folding stock, RIS hand-guard, EOTech sight & a GP-30 minus-the-pistol-grip (As was seen in renders & a gameplay trailer around 2008). Then the mod release in 2012 had the MP5 with extended sliding stock, M203PI, barrel shroud & muzzle attachment as per the End of Days set-up or the "MP5 EOD" as it's often informally named (Of which what real-world examples of the Malaysian Armed Forces actually used that I can find aren't too far removed from). Then finally, the Early Access & Retail version had it's MP5 with a railed hand-guard & a shortened M203PI that was more closely based on the original Half Life's world-model (The version you saw lying about or in other characters' hands), except with the sliding stock fully extended & used.
Of course, the modding scene provides a few different options ranging from higher-fidelity "MP5 EOD" variants to a recreation of the original Half Life view-model (The version you saw in your own hands, AKA the MP5SD that wasn't "SD" at all & had an under-barrel grenade launcher).
He is just a man of culture.
That's what makes him so well respected among gamers.
@@thecommunistloli1042 You're right in that it's the most well known Half Life fan game, I don't deny that. But I'd wager a lot more people are familiar with the name Half Life in general, than who know about Black Mesa. If that makes sense.
Underhell and Paranoia also had an MP5 with a grenade launcher in those games.

PASKAL, the Malaysian Royal Navy was well known for using mp5s with m203 underslung grenade launchers. These launchers would be fitted with stun and smoke grenades and would be used to raid cargo ships in the event that they've been seized by pirates. Aside from that, they were also well known for adopting the XM8 carbines because they needed lightweight short barrel rifles that are shorter than an m4 carbine to be able to move around a ship interior more freely while still having armor piercing capabilities.
Yeah, was thinking this would be great for launching smoke or even tear-gas grenades when clearing buildings. You don’t have to put aside your gun and reach for a grenade.
Ah the xm8
Australian specops in Vietnam once showed off a number of special guns they used for a publication. One of them was a Sterling 9mm subgun with an integrated silencer and a Colt XM148 40x46mm grenade launcher attached onto it.
Lol, you are right, and i believed that the XM8 never left the prototypphase.
XM8 for paskal, literally just parade pieces
To me it made some sense that the HECU would use SMGs with suppressors, since they're expected to operate in so many indoor underground areas, save destroying their hearing
I feel like they're flash hiders and not suppressors. They're loud as hell in Half-Life 1.
@@JackFoxtrotEDM that's probably what they used, I always thought the viewmodel for the player's MP5 just had a big barrel when compared to the worldmodel and saw it as an oversight from the game designers.
@@JackFoxtrotEDM that's because originally the gun WAS meant to be suppressed, but then they decided that the incredibly loud sounds were cooler, without changing the model though.
@@ACoarseGuy Yeah, it is silenced in alpha.
Also it's funny, they'd use a suppressor to save their hearing but then destroy their hearing anyways with grenade launchers.
Yknow I'm pretty sure the marines equiped alot of their HECU units with these back in the day, atleast from what I remember from seeing the Black Mesa disaster on the news. Glad they got that cleaned up.

That is genuinely a great idea honestly. You get a compact submachine gun AND capability to fire any of the special 40mm rounds that you could ever want. Sounds like a perfect fit for the philosophy of 2000s counter-terror type forces.
There are 40mm flashbangs, I have to imagine that was the intended use case for this moreso than HE/frag grenades. While I'm sure that there are a few specop mission profiles where a close in operator also acting as a grenadier is possible, I think that the deployment of flashbangs is by far the most likely use case. From a manufacturer perspective that's also a much larger potential market than just a few specops sales, lots of police SWAT units would potentially have a use for the capability.
In close quarters yes, it would be more practical to use flash bangs, concussion and smoke grenades, and possibly tear gas canisters if they are available in 40mm as well. And if they are then it would certainly be useful for swat teams.

The biggest advantage to the pivoting GL is that your ammunition length isn’t limited like with the 203. Conceivably you could use a cartridge at least as long as the tube.
It's a one-man implementation of the classic tactic of an artillery barrage on a position followed by an infantry attack. Use long range weapons and then short range ones. A squad of infantry equipped with these could operate well independently in low-density urban/suburban settings or in some woodlands.
I don’t think it’s the grenade launcher that needs explaining, it’s the Submachine gun. Most grenade launcher’s mounted to infantry weapons are either mounted to a bolt action, back in the day, or assault rifles today .
As a Malaysian, it's always so fun to spot Malaysia being in the extra/fun facts of anything light arms related.
And I thank your Navy for giving my beloved XM8 a place to shine. REGARDLESS OF WHAT PEOPLE THINK OF IT.
You Malaysians got a cool Air Force btw. I don’t often see a mix of Su-30s and F/A-18s or a blend of Eastern and Western equipment (besides Poland and your neighbors in Indonesia) and I always find it cool.

Unbelievable! It actually exists, the whole Royal Armouries Jonathan Ferguson arc goes full circle. Seeing this gun in real life feels like coming home

Very nice video.
Half-life gang
My first thought to why was. Half life
Now only thing that’s missing is a 50 round clip instead of 50 round drums 😁
Those were the days.
First thing that popped in my head is Hal life
I like scribbling random λ's sometimes and seeing how many people ask "what is that?", and I just smile.
Yes it's especially good for special forces, namely the HECU. The automatic SMG allows for great effectiveness in clearing out human targets such as scientists and security personnel, while the grenade launcher is a good choice against extraterrestrial threats.
And occasionally Theoretical Physicists wearing Orange hazard suits.
I hope someone on the Black Mesa steam workshop creates a skin for the MP5 based off of this. Would be pretty cool to finally have the real-world counterpart more accurately depicted in a video game.
give it time or..."prepare for unintended consequences"
IF they ever did Half Life as a miniseries (I'd do it like 24. Real time) G-man should be Bob Odenkirk, Jeff Goldblum, Ben Mendelson or (outside chance but he'd nail it) Kiefer Sutherland.
While that would be cool and I would love to see it, I will say that it's the US millitary using it for a unit that doesn't actually exist. In the world of half-life it would make complete sense for the US government to equip thier secret hazardous enviorment response team (And the extra-secret black ops cleanup team but maybe they just took those from the HECU) with thier own model of MP5 grenade launcher that is perhaps based off this one but is actually an independent design.
That launcher may not have sights of any kind because it’s intended for the same sort of short range/ close quarters shooting as the MP5 itself. Experienced grenadiers with the M79 and M203 could often just eyeball shots within 200 meters with enough accuracy to do damage, grenades usually not needing direct hits to do damage. Direct fire at walls, doors and windows in urban combat would also be reasonably easy. And of course it could be used to launch star shells for signaling or illumination without needing sights.
Jonathan Freeman in the flesh
But who's the guy in the suit with the briefcase?
@@derekp2674 you mean G-man? that is still a mystery
@@ferdinand12390 Indeed, but if Jonathan is now going to play Gordon Freeman, then who should play the G-man role?
My first thought was "law enforcement/riot" use, not special forces, as having tear gas on a firearm to disperse the crowd, then for anyone really determined, you have that 9mm hollow point to know you're only hitting and penetrating the person you want to
I know hollow points are illegal according to the Geneva convention, however it's perfectly fine for internal use in law enforcement/civilian roles in the U.S. at least for the civilian part
Or load it up with rubber rounds/simunitions. Hurt like a mfer but still nonlethal
I always liked to think that Marines in Half Life used MP5s with underbarrel grenade launchers specifically for the Black Mesa incedent with particular reasons in mind. Since it was going to be just a "clean up" 9mm (especially if the Marines, hypothetically, had hollow point ammunition) is ideal for dispatching poor scientists at close range, not as loud as 5,56 while firing indoors and also compatible with service pistol. The grenade launcher on the other hand can help with clearing out barricaded sciense and security personal, open up firing ports or possibly passage ways through concrete and brick walls, shooting off door hinges (if used with buckshot type 40mm shells) or delivering teargas to force poor bastards to run in the line of sight. The only downside of this weapon system would be insufficient penetration of the 9mm against armored security guards, but I guess that's where volume of fire and shot placement would come into play (or maybe they have some crazy secret squirrel russian-style high pressure steel core 9x19 ammunition in 2 spare mags marked with red electrical tape? That would be wicked cool).

This was such an entertaining episode. I wonder if this was primarily designed for smoke or explosive use.
Well Freeman fired a lot of grenades from the mp5
Oh he does reload it after firing, there's just no animation for it.
He reloads so fast that the human eye can’t notice.
Ideal combo for me is this on an mp5SD. 9mm when you want to be quiet, 40mm when you don’t.
Beanbag would make lethal and less lethal available at all times. Smoke for marking targets and obscuring movements in the open. Teargas for area denial. Frags for those hard to reach spots. I mean, it may not work for military applications, but it would be great for home defense.
Thanks Jonathan & all the team responsible for all the really interesting videos. Catch You next episode.
That's Awesome! thanks for showing this iconic gun
Considering the mp5's is most well known for hostage rescue and counter terrorism type uses, the less than lethal grenades like CS gas grenades make a lot more sense for this weapon. It would be kind of awful to be stuck with this gun in an actual warzone where HE would be needed, even with the grenade launcher it would probably feel like a slight upgrade from being issued the m79 in vietnam.

Well, regarding MP7+launcher. I do not know if it exists IRL, but in HL2 Combine SMG (visual derivative of MP7) does have a granade launcher in mechanics if not in the model.
The RM Equipment M203PI still in production, was marketed from circa 1987, they issued a brochure in 1990 which showed a M203 fitted to a MP5 among other weapons.
I wish I would have had one of these when I went to Ravenholm
That pivot reference, I swear I could hear Ross yelling in that stairwell the second after ahahaha

As a Rainbow Six veteran there were often times I had to put the gun aside and reach for a smoke/stun grenade 😅
Very cool

That's very cool
Love it. I’ll take the Beretta 92 version please. I’ll need a new holster though.
My mate is in love with this gun, specifically with the underbarrel grenade launcher
The grenade launcher sounds are incredibly satisfying. Very clunky and nice
I'd say that:
1)it sort of makes sense for SWAT/Trojan as they don't need full power assault rifle that will shoot through walls and injure civilians across the street from operation. GL can be used for smoke, gas and concussion munitions.
2)if you don't plan to giving your grenadier full weight AR, this might be a good option. Except I'm not sure how much value is in that collapsible stock in such configuration. And it also lacks GL sights.
Deploying smoke, gas or flashbang with launcher in hostage rescue and similar missions gives one very needed tactical advance as you can shoot them through windows, vents and doorways from moderate distances even without sights.
"Speak softly and carry a big stick" comes to mind
That’s sick

I'm pretty sure that extractor WOULD kick an empty casing out like a shot shell, the dummy grenade is likely heavier by a fair margin and if you do that while holding the gun like you would during use, it would also eject backwards or downwards which helps as well.
This seems like a more useful tool for LE using less than lethal projectiles than special operations using it for more offensive measures.
At least in the UK, the rapid response armed police use G36 variant carbines with grenade launchers that fire baton rounds.
Standard practice is to jump out the car, scream for them to surrender and hit them with a baton round, then they either surrender or are engaged. Immediate engagement, but not immediately lethal and gives the suspect a chance to surrender.
