- The Last Trick (Original Title: Poslední trik pana Schwarcewalldea a pana Edgara) is a 1964 Czechoslovak animated short film by Jan Švankmajer. It was Švankmajer's first film.
During the title sequence, the cast and crew are seen backstage preparing for their performance. The play depicts two mime-like magicians (who are portrayed by both costumed actors and Kuroko style puppets) named Mr. Edgar and Mr. Schwarzwald, trying to outdo each other by performing various stage tricks for the pleasure of an unseen audience. After each act, the two performers congratulate each other with a handshake. However, as tensions rise, the handshakes become less friendly and even violent. For his first trick, Edgar skins a fish by placing it inside his papier mache head; Schwarzwald one ups him by making a dog puppet perform various tricks on a tightrope; Edgar in turn grows several arms and begins playing various instruments simultaneously; Schwarzwald imitates this trick by growing several heads and juggling them; and Edgar causes several chairs to come alive and perform tricks at the crack of a whip. For the magicians' last trick, Edgar and Schwarzwald make themselves disappear by tearing each other to pieces.
RIP the beetle in this. Best character with a tragic end.
He's just pretending. ;-)
@@postler1978I'm pretty sure he got bodied from the amount of flipping and crushing.

Jan Svankmajer films are so fascinating. They're creepy, yet also peaceful and calming

I absolutely adore the trained chairs - this whole thing is so charming in its slapstick movement, so uncanny in a beautiful way! The editing goes freaking hard for 1964, like damn
That one bug shows up so much and just sorta dies right at the end
Thank you James Rolfe, for recommending these amazing films to us.

Beautiful. I didn't understand a thing.
The Beatle was to only good person and he died as well. 🥺😓
This reminds me a lot of Norman McLaren's work
EXCELLENT !👍👌♥️
Fun Fact: This was the original idea for the movie The Terminator. James Cameron changed the screenplay drastically in later drafts.
so so cute
10:44 Damn!!😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I love Jan svankmajer
The Prestige but with puppets:D
James Rolfe did this to me, now I'm sad because the beetle died :(
They used a model. The real beetle enjoyed a healthy beetle life as a movie star
@@Garl_Vinland Yup! he played the Bettle in the movie "Herbie", one of the Scarabs in "The Mummy", he also plays one of the pre-historic giant beetles from the "Caved In: Prehistoric Terror" movie, and he is returning now in the upcoming DCEU movie "Blue Beetle"
He's a cool dude I saw him on a grass field once!
Akimbo Madman Don’t forget about beatle juice!
Thx James for giving me nightmares
The Beetle was the coolest character in this story.
Still trying trying to figure out what he meant with the beetles
I took it as a representation of two competing powers with the beetle caught in the middle. In the end the two competing power destroy themselves, despite feigned civility, and the beetle dies in the destruction as well. Perhaps the beetle represents the common man. But I have no idea, I had not heard of this man or his work until I saw the name on Cinemassacre's page and wanted to watch them before I watched the review completely.
@@NashEsq I interpreted it as the beetle being the creature controlling these weird magicians. Each magician had one bug crawling around their heads. A bug, perhaps representing some sort of flaw. These men are both guided by their flaws: their arrogance, their hatred. In the end, it's what destroys them.
I think it’s that the beatle controls them. They are actually machines. I think there is only one beatle.
Someone can help me to know the name of the song in the intro?
Kousíček Za Prahou - Bohemians Duo
I was sent by an angel known as "James Rolfe"
gonna be the one to ask what the song played throughout this short is.
I don't know the title of the song, but the artist's name is Štěpán Koníček.
@@baronvongott7879 I think he was the one who did the orchestration no? Maybe it’s the names under “hudba”
Edit: Found the song is called “Kousíček Za Prahou” though no clues on the artist yet!
Edit 2: Artists are the Bohemian Duo!
wondrful!
Man just wanted a nice handshake
This film is beyond me. What does the title suggest?
The last trick that the magicians perform is making themselves disappear by tearing each other apart.
That is The Last Trick.
The “story” element of duelling magicians jealously escalating their competitive spectacles might be a premonitory tale of art spoiled by human partiality or commercial pressures (the winner will be he who compromises himself the most, sacrificing his body and soul for the audience’s delectation), or it might be a snapshot of how the most ferociously fought battles are internecine struggles rather than those between competing ideologies, a drama about the impossibility of compromise, of selfless dialogue.

That´s the official Storyline:
