Through your videos and other reviewers high praise for the MXN10 I purchased one last night to replace WIIM Pro+ that is moving to another listening space, so this video was quite timely... btw for those interested I scored mine for $380 open box on the Cambridge Audio eBay store, extra 15%. off ends today! I'm not trying to promote it, just looking out for fellow Kmart Blue Light Special shoppers like myself. I'm not interested in a screen, I have too many already, just give me the music. Probably a Geshelli J2/3S in the future to put a bow on things, but I'll be looking out for your upcoming DAC videos. Thanks as always for another great video and for all that you do.

I absolutely agree regarding the Eversolo A6 and the digital glare issue. I listen to a lot of jazz and when horns where in the mix I could not enjoy my favorites...I returned the A6 and now have the A8 different beast altogether. The AKM set up is far superior in the A8 to the A6,night and day to my ear.

I think that the AKM AK4499EXEQ+AK4191EQ switched resistor hybrid Delta-Sigma/Multi bit DAC will be a game changer for chip based DACs. AKM has some other interesting stuff coming in the future that uses that Velvet sound tech. I am smitten with that set up. I now have a Geshelli J2S which has that chip in a single DAC set up and it is amazing. Thanks for watching and sharing you experience.

From what I have seen the Eversolo A8 is an incredible streamer/DAC and couple tiers above the A6 but that is just based on the reviews.
I am using my Technics SU-GX70 Network Audio Digital Amplifier with its built-in streamer.
The black unit which I prefer is selling for $1,500.

The MXN10 seems like a nice option as a streamer only. The DAC can be considered a convenience feature.

What made my choice simple, is not just the fact that each model is very affordable. It's the fact that all, except the Wiim Mini, have the capability to be used with the Logitech Media Server software and thus, you can add Squeezebox devices to your music system. I run LMS on a RPI and use the Squeezebox Duet Controller to control my Wiim.

    Nice comparison between the DACs.
BTW, no playlists, as usual from me, but let me introduce you to 2 French artists/bands:
    - Noir Desir 90's indie rock that stopped du to some controversy about the singer and the fact that he went to jail but it's not important let the music talk, I saw them 3 times live each time a unique experience.
I'd recommend starting with their 2nd (Veuillez rendre l'Ame) or 3rd album (Du Ciment sous les Plaines)
Not understanding the language you will lose some of the richness of the lyrics but even then musically it's quite good (and some songs are in English)
They're on Spotify, YT doesn't seem to have a lot of their albums
    - Manu Chao: and now for something completely different (sorry couldn't resist), take some indie rock, Spanish and South American music add some North African influences and you get Manu Chao, it's quite unique, lots of the songs are in Spanish but also in French, English, Arabic or a mix of them ...
Start with Clandestino and work up the way till Radio Bemba Sound System which is a live and bursting with energy.
    He's on Spotify and YT
    There, that's it for me...

Here's what a owner had to say about the Bluesound Node Icon with the ESS dac chip:
"The balanced outputs on the Node Icon uses two stereo dacs, one for each channel, one side for each leg, for a fully differential circuit from the DAC chips to the XLR outputs.
The RCA does not have this advantage. The listed specs show SNR of (XLR: -129dB, RCA: -121dB) so that's an extra 8dB of dynamic range on the balanced outputs. I won't even bother trying the unbalanced outputs on this, since my preamplifier has balanced inputs.
Binky: This is a completely reworked analogue stage with better power supplies and a differential circuit, with better specs as per above (if you can make use of the balanced output). I expect even the RCA will benefit from the updated DAC chipset as well as the better power supply. Also, Bluesound is using their newly acquired technology from MQA:
"DAC performance is further enhanced by MQA Labs’ revolutionary technology, QRONO d2a, which corrects any timing errors in the digital-to-analogue conversion process and realigns the timing response to the original recording." - from the Icon brochure
"Qrono d2a, meanwhile, aims to rectify problems with digital audio timing that often occur when filters are used to convert digital sound between digital and analogue formats, making audio more natural and lifelike while reducing listener fatigue. MQA claims that d2a reduces issues such as 'time ringing' (where listeners hear echoes before and/or after a note is played), resulting in a crisper, more authentic sound without lagging or echoes.
Qrono d2a also employs a more 'bespoke' approach to signal filters. While most DAC chips use the same filters for inputs at different sample rates, an approach which MQA describes as "unnecessarily aggressive", Qrono filters are optimised for the musical spectrum of each input sample rate, preserving the original musicality as a result."
    www.whathifi.com/news/mqas-late ... your-music
"How big a difference?" I can't answer that. I will say this: To my ears, the Icon sounds very analogue and natural, but some may read that that the wrong way, as dull and bloated, which it is not. I think the Icon is doing an excellent job of creating a believable "analogue" signal from the digital bits. This doesn't necessarily "knock you socks off" but just sounds fundamentally right, and "non-digital". More like a R2R analogue tape, which is what I said of the A8 when I had it. With the Icon, there is a noticeable absence of digital glare, the music flows with liquid grace, but it's not something that hits you in the face. You hear it with a bit of time on it, and comparing back and forth. So far, I just notice that the sound holds together in a coherent whole in a way that I don't hear often with other DACs I have had. It may not be the last word in separation, bass grunt, treble extension, but so often these "qualities" become "detractors" to music listening.
But as John Darko always says, these kind of differences are not "blows it out of the water" or "night and day"... don't forget to enjoy the music!"

YES SIR! I love Omega. We used to go to the one on Ogden in DG. Other than the Mini, all the WiiM units use the same streaming module. Thanks for the video. I have had experience with 3 of the 4. The Wiim’s versatility including an equalizer is outstanding for the price. I use in a family system not dedicated for critical listening. I had the CXN 100 and I returned it. The StreamMagic app was not a good match with my Qobuz platform. Others have had the same issue. The Eversolo’s were great, I auditioned both the DMP 6 snd 8, but they wouldn’t stay connected to by wireless, which was not a problem for any of the others. A lot of online complaints about the issue. The company is aware but doesn’t have a fix. I Use a Bluesound Node N130 as my base unit. Will be auditioning the Topping D90 III as a DAC. If needed I have the Bifrost 2/64 and Denafrips Ares 15 next up. Trying to stay in the 1-2 K range. It’s a great hobby. Rock on.

Another great review Ed! One thing to note for your viewers is the Eversolo is the only one of those that has a native Apple Music app that streams lossless and hi-res lossless music. AirPlay is OK, but it’s not the same quality for Apple Music. The Eversolo DMP-A6 paired with the Schiit Bifrost 2/64 is incredible and better sounding than the Eversolo DMP-A8 IMO for less money.

Hi Ed. Another good video! It’s clear you have no love for the Eversolo, it’s ok, I still love mine. Not having all the equipment you have access to run comparisons, I decided to test my Eversolo DMP-A6 vs my Marantz SR8015 using HEOS, and the truth is I had a tough time finding a better sounding one.
Marantz used the AKM4458 DAC chip but I read in Audio Science Review that in 2021 they replaced it with a TI DAC, most likely the PCM1502A DAC found in Denon AVRs. The Eversolo has the ESS ES9038Q2M DAC chips which you don’t like. In my listening, I found they both sounded very similar. Maybe my 71 years old ears have something to do with it.
I have to admit, as a fan of the A6 menu, I was surprised to find using the HEOS platform to listen to Tidal fairly easy. Had I not have the A6 already, I think the Marantz on its own would have worked for me.
Again, thanks for the time you take to share your experiences. Always happy to watch your videos.

With ultra i went with usb output and the sound definitely got better…noticeably. Sharper and sound stage got bigger. With usb connection youre using clock of dac and with spidf youre using clock of streamer. This is probably why it sounds better. Just my two cents

I with Arcam CDS50, Topping X3 Pro +, and Cambridge Audio MXN10, I can barely make out any difference in sound. Certainly nothing between the Topping and the Cambridge Audio. With the Bluesound Node X, I do get a difference, but I can't say I was a fan of the sound.
The one that did unsurprisingly sound the be would be the Burson Audio. The X3 Conductor Performance just has a little more life, but I think that is really down to how the chip is integrated into the Burson Audio.
I also find that I do end up playing around with the filter in the Burson Audio, and this can make a big diffence to how long I can listen. Particularly with the ZMF Auteurs with the Auteur pads which are very neutral. I may well try them with the Eikon Pads which are more darker sounding.

Nicely done! I wonder if the glare you hear on the A6 is a function of it's output stage, rather than the dac chip itself. I had the Eversolo A6 Master Edition for a while and while it was certainly extended up top, I did not perceive a glare in the upper mid range, at least in my system. One way to have included the Orchard audio in assessing its streaming capabilities would have been to use it as an external dac for all the streamers. Of course, it would have an unfair advantage by being internally hitched to its own dac via i2s, but might still have been an interesting exercise.

    • @OldGuyHifi
      @OldGuyHifi  5 месяцев назад

I did use it as the test DAC. And I did not try to compare the internal DAC with the others. I think the glare comes from the DSP that is applied during the decoding process. I am 100% sure of that. I do hear that glare on all ESS DAC. Thanks for the view and comment.

I currently have the A6 and was thinking about upgrading to the linear power supply but now you have me thinking maybe going with the Cambridge. • @OldGuyHifi

Cambridge developed their own streaming engine and have been doing it for about a dozen years. The engine and OS are all based on Linux rather than Android. So they van still support all those legacy units. There have been four iterations of the Stream Magic engines. The MXN10 is Ver. 3 and the CXN100 and my EVO150 are on Ver. 4. I am not sure I hear a big difference between them. I thought the Eversolo, as a streamer, sounded thin and a bit lifeless. That may be a bit strong maybe thin & flat is a better description. I did use my EVO150 as the amp and DAC to compare the Eversolo to Ver. 4 and then I used my Bifrost as the DAC fed by the Eversolo and also the MNX10 (Ver. 3) then the 150 as the amp. Again it seemed a bit thin and flat to my ear. The Stream Magic engine has an excellent clocking circuit and is smooth, detailed and full sounding. I have used the MXN10 to drive almost all the gear I review from affordable to vintage to high end and it always delivers the detail and sound signature I lean towards. I hope this helps. BTW, what DAC are you using? Thx.

At $500 it isn't cheap but I can't think of a stand alone streamer that comes close for even up to $1000. The Stream Magic engine has been in use for over a dozen years and Cambridge built their own module and the core OS is Linux so no worries about an Android update that suddenly abandons your device. I am confused as to how multiple DACs interact with each other. So, for example, my set up has a WiiM Pro Plus streaming via an optical cable to an Emotiva TA-1. Both have DACs. Which DAC am I hearing? If I wanted to add a “better” DAC, would it have to use RCAs to bypass the Emotiva DAC? Maybe this is all perfectly simple, but not to this not so old guy.

    • @OldGuyHifi
      @OldGuyHifi  5 месяцев назад

Good question, Your WiiM pro is only sending a data signal via optical so, it's internal DAC is not being used. The TA-1's internal DAC is doing all the heavy lifting. Yes, if you wanted to use a "better" DAC you would take the optical from the WiiM into the new DAC and RCA in to the TA-1. I hope that helps. Thanks for tuning in.

    • @OldGuyHifi

Like a DAC a streamer needs to be able to reduce the incoming signal's jitter and timing issues. Inexpensive streamers lack a clocking system to do that and IMHO don't sound as good as a well designed stream module. I hear a big difference between the WiiM & Eversolo units and the Cambridge MXN10. I have had many other viewers say the same thing. Currently running a WiiM Pro into the internal DAC of my Technics SU-G700 and have had excellent sounding results, but last weekend I plugged the new FiiO K11 RTR into my main system and the WiiM going into the FiiO and to my ears made the streaming sound say a bit more "analog" where the presentation is smoothed out and warmer, thinking the FiiO is staying put for now and there might be a Denafrips in my future. I previously had a Cambridge CXN and it was a very nice streamer but thought the Fiio Pro was less glitchy with its software and processed the stream much smoother, never gave much thought if the SQ of the stream would actually improve utilizing the same DAC. I am sure the DAC is ok. It is the streaming engine that is the weak point. Very poor oscillator circuit and clock implementation. Lot's of jitter. Not all streamers are the same. On WIFI streams there is tons of noise and timing issues. While it may not but very audible it does increase the overall noise floor which can smear the image and dramatically reduce fine details. For the money the WiiM is fine. I have one for background music when entertaining and it sounds ok. It won't pass muster for critical listening however. Great comment. Thank you.

You've piqued my interest in the Cambridge MXN-10 - it has an internal power supply, apparently. Can you at some point compare it to a Bluesound Node xx? I have replaced the internal switch mode power supply with an external linear power supply, and that made a YUGE improvement in the sound quality. Like my preference for standalone DACs, I think standalone streamers make the most sense, because you are not paying for things you will never use. So I have been looking for a better streamer - the Volumio Rivo is on my list - and now maybe the Cambridge MXN-10.
I like one particular feature in the Bluesound OS - I can sign into my Radio Paradise account, and this lets me listen to My Favorites on RP. (Though this feature just was broken a few days ago - I have to hope that they will correct this issue, soon?) At some point, I might go Roon or the software you use (remind me of the name), but so far I have been streaming "unassisted".

    • @OldGuyHifi
      @OldGuyHifi  5 месяцев назад +1

Neil, I just emailed Cambridge tech support Mgr, to ask him if the internal power supply is linear. Because of the time difference between me and London I may not know for a day or so. The MXN10 does not support Radio Paradise. Sorry. The Bluesound Node X and regular Bluesound use the same streaming module ( they all do) and I have compared the two. I think the Node X has an ESS DAC vs the TI DAC in the regular Node. I won't do a review of that because I only had the Node for a couple of days and didn't get a chance to film anything. I feed both into my Bifrost over SPDIF and could switch back and forth quickly. To my ear the Cambridge sounded more open and detailed without any brightness. The Node sounded a bit thin and the sound stage was not as well defined. I use the MXN10 as a digital transport for just about every review with many DAC combos. I have always found it to be very accurate and reveling. I use Audirvana and often go UPNP to the MXN10 and then to a DAC for those setups where I don't want to run a long cable. My suspicion is Lenbrook developed Bluesound to hit a price point. I don't know if they have made many updates over time. Cambridge developed the Stream Magic platform about 12 years ago and because it is based on Linux they can still support all those old devices. Zeidman got one to replace his WiiM Pro+ feeding his Ladder-Schuman and told me it was a big upgrade. I think he said he was hearing things, in songs he has been listening to for decades, that he didn't know was there. If you want to dip your toe, Cambridge has a great Bay store where they sell open box and "B" stock units cheap. That's how Steve got his. @@OldGuyHifi I just did this with the OA and the A8. I am returning the OA. The Raspberry Pi is too wonky for us even with using Roon. The A8 is more stable and user friendly. Using Roon is a game changer.

@@marybethheydt8099 O get it. I also had a few issues with it. I was able to overcome them for the review. I would love to try the A8. That AKM chip set sounds great in another one of my stand alone DACs. Thanks for the update. Cheers.

I wish I had better internet to take advantage of the WiiM pro's best attributes. I can't even listen to High res recordings on it.

I use Ropieee on RPi4 board and output the sound through usb to SMSL SU-1. Ropieee supports Airplay 1 which streams lossless from Apple Music on Iphone.

It does. It is pretty good too. I don't mention it often because I use it as a digital transport to feed signal via SPDIF to test other DACs. Did you have a question about it?

Excellent, thanks for this, very interesting. I'm curious about your process, what kind of testtracks are your goto specifically when evaluating the DAC quality, what exactly do you hear in the ESS you don't like?
Just received the Wiim Ultra and I love the device. It's now camping on my desktop so the touchscreen is valid. I do intend to move it to the livingroom, I'm so happy with the Wiim devices (also the Pro plus and the Amp). They just work and play daily for everybody in the house! I might try an external DAC, I have a Topping. Thanks and continue the great content!
I love this Paolo Nutini song in my test playlist music.ruclips.net/video/BuF1u9MnkjM/видео.html&si=yRwam0ZoayYp-9W5

Ewout, Sorry for the late response. I re-did the community post playlist to initially include some of my test track playlists on Tidal. Spotify & Qobuz will follow. To give you a reference on what I mean when I talk about ESS Sabre "glare" listen to Bryan Ferry's album Bête Noire. The recording is very bright to begin with, and to me is almost unlistenable on a Sabre based DAC. On a non-ESS DAC it is still very bright but, much more tolerable. Unfortunately that Paolo Nutini track is not available to play here in the US on RUclips. I promise I will find it. Ultimately all that matters is your opinion. Let me know your thoughts. Thanks so much for your support.

Theirs no Glare on 9038 . And the 9039 has exceptional mids 😮😊

I haven't heard the 9039 yet. I know ESS followed AKM and went with a current based design as opposed to a voltage based setup. I bet it will sound good. Thanks for the view.
