- New NYC subway cars will replace the ones that have been running for nearly 50 years. But you’re going to have to wait until late 2023. NBC New York’s Myles Miller reports.
I'm glad to see that the New York subway is now getting where the state of the art was 11 years ago.
😂😂

@@TheRailLeaguer true true
All about cost. State of the art costs money, and people are allergic to taxes.
If the city could keep the trains clean and safe for the riders’ pleasant environment, doesn’t matter they’re old/new model.
People exist
It’s not always the city’s fault, it’s the riders who don’t take care of their trains either. People are destructive.
That’s pretty much impossible unless people change themselves

At first I was expecting the exterior design of the new trains to look significantly different or modernized (like how Montreal's newer cars look for example), but I think I actually like how they've retained the boxy silver design of the older cars and stuck to implementing new features. Love the design of the next stop displays.
Yeah, they kept the exterior the same but interiors is more modern
Montreal's trains don't look any more modern they're just a different shape in terms of insides they look similar
I like it I'm so tired of looking at old falling apart trains.

It would of been nice if they had middle center holding bar for people who are standing. People tend to stand over people who are sitting to hold on to something to not fall.
It All Depends Of The Train Is On A Straigt Line...
We Have These Cars In Toronto Too...
But I Always Love Takin My A-Train To Boxin...
Yes this would be nice. But then people in wheelchairs couldn’t move about in the train. There are ADA laws that prevent this.
Seriously? These things will be destroyed within a month not to mention the homeless taking dumps in the corner while breakdancers and mariachi bands shake you down for money.
But you aint wrong about a mid bar. In a normal functioning World and city i would nominate you as my transportation secretary

@@Trainsallday wheel chairs don’t have to go everywhere. One carriage for them is good enough.
As a native New Yorker, my only complaints & caution is what if a homeless person that has severely bad body odor sleeps in one cart, no doubly the smell will travel through the whole train. Also sometimes homeless pee, smoke, & whatever else, between train carts, what happens when they don’t have that option, probably just pee or smoke in the open (yes it happens). Everything else looks nice, but those are my only curiosities for now.
Same.
100% this.
Oh don’t worry the homeless people are patiently waiting for their new trains to arrive each new train will be funky and dirty by next month depends ☠️
Then we throw them out
Simple. Change carriages?? Gangways are a very old design, our trains in Australia have had them for decades now, whenever someone with bad odour boards, you can just simply walk to the next carriage without having to go outside 😊
The Pullman-Standard built R46s that will be replaced by the 211s have been running on the system since 1975, when Gerald Ford was president, Hugh Carey was Governor and Abe Beame was mayor. BTW, that is actually a mid-1980s R62A 6 train you just showed and B division trains don't fit on the IRT.

What did you expect for a red state
@@richardmesser1091 come on now, Nebraska is more interesting than that, and New York would be a red state too, if its cities weren't so large.
The city of Omaha is solidly blue, and luckily their congressional district is able to vote that way in the Electoral college, it doesn't just have to let its vote be superseded by the state at large like most states. Nebraska is the only U.S. state with a unicameral legislature, which ostensibly makes it easier for populist/progressive politics to succeed.
Omaha recently finished a BRT line and is on its way to build a streetcar as well.
It's one of the few cities I know of where you can still buy a decent tasting beer out at the bar for just $5. It's definitely a better town than you might otherwise expect

The cars with the open gangway are the R211T. The separate cars are the R211A.
R211A will debut in the spring, 211Ts in the fall
Not a fan of the open passways through each car. Having them closed was a way for us New Yorkers to leave a smelly car, car fillies with homeless, a loud car, and a car with potential danger. Having them all with open pass-ways just seems counterproductive idk.
Odd enough, gangways also have the benefit for people who don't feel comfortable around a creepy person it allows them to get away.

Yeah, they should've shown an A train or an N or Q train arriving. The R46s are running on the Broadway & 8th Ave Lines lately.
How you guys know all the models
The concept is OLD. In the 1920's the BMT had "Triplex Cars"; 3 cars semi-permanently coupled together with a "walk-through" between the middle car and the 2 end cars. I believe they were built by Pressed Steel Car Company. I'm not sure why that design never went forward (until today).
The BMT commissioned experimental lighter weight aluminum cars as a way to be light enough to operate on the elevated viaducts while also complying with new regulations effectively outlawing wooden cars. These regulations were set by mayor Hylan who was trying to kill the BMT and IRT, among other ways by setting impossible hurdles which had little to do with safety. Once he got his wish and the city took over everything, there was no more purpose to these designs. So they were cancelled.
1:50 -- You guys are talking about an R46... and then show a picture of an R62.
The media's research is lazy.
that's crazy I went to queens on tuesday and got on one of these a couple times and did not care to notice anything about it 😂literally was like "oh that screen showing the stops are new, cool" and moved on with my day. 1.4 bil for the same old train we had yesterday🤣
Good to see that the MTA has made progress. Hopefully, there will be further changes such as the return of the old trolley buses and the trolley lines. And this time let's have double deckers in order to give passengers more room.
We need trolleys, especially in the Bronx where the constant exposure to idling cars and particle pollution is actually killing us. It's shocking how extensive the trolley system was in BX some 70 years ago compared to now. All to be sold out to the auto industry. The streetscape has just devolved ever since.
@@judevientos4039
Excellent post. 100% spot on. We added a tram system (modernized trolley ~ European style) here in the Twin Cities a few years ago. The critics said it would be a waste of money and disruptive to our local transportation system. Much to their surprise, the system promoted local transport, relieved traffic congestion, stimulated business & shopping, and promoted transportation to amusements such as sporting events and theater. In only a few years the cost for the system was recaptured thus making it a worthwhile investment. That is what will happen if a trolley/tram system is put in place there in the Bronx and throughout all of NYC.
@@merccadoosis8847 Trolleys are never coming back to NYC. And what you are describing in the Twin Cities is a light rail system that also won't be coming to NYC anytime soon. Get a grip.

Ok how will I know which cars to avoid now?

You still can avoid some cars. The Open Gangway trains, which may mainly be assigned to the E, F, and R routes, will allow for one to avoid them easier.
at 10 million a piece, the showtime guys are gonna have a field day with this layout. no more switching cars to avoid to avoid their dance routines :(
I hate those guys. Nothing more annoying (but more New York) than getting hassled by a dirty bum pretending to be talented on the way home from work
And the mentally ill people bringing garbage on the train with them and smelling like death. Can't avoid those people either
That’s what I was thinking but they used to walk between cars anyways
@@Number1Camper This is the most obvious argument against those who suddenly think you won’t be able to get away anymore. They were always able to walk through the cars freely.
The only thing now is you can hear the music from the next cart
Right. The doors were great separate between you and crazy people or smelly cars.
The first subway train to have open gangway was the first 3 D types of the BMT in 1925 numbered 6000 to 6002. The rest of the fleet came in 1927 and 1928 putting an end to wooden el trains to Chambers Street station from the Broadway Jamaica line that August by freeing the BMT Standards to take their place.
I wonder why were there never 10000 train cars in the entire MTA. Same thing for the city buses and railroad commuter trains. Do you know?
Looks like most of the public trains in many European cities. Finally 👏👏
Lol no. Zero design put into those boring cold stainless steel boxes. Take a look at Siemens Inspiro for example. That's a proper modern train, yet it's already over 10 years old. The same goes for Alstom Metropolis in Budapest etc. Now compare these to your "new" trains.

1:55 That's an R62A. Not an R46.
I remember riding the R46 when i first visited NY, im so glad they are replacing it, one of the hottest trains, crowded and tight, musty. Then I was on one of the newer trains, the one that has a stop display showing the next stop and the next few stops, very nice and spacious even with many on the car
There is 8 million people here if more are on trains doesn't that mean overcrowding u will never have enough trains 4 8 million people. Do u know the MTA history.
The R46 is a great train. It was so dramatically nicer than its predecessors when it was introduced in 1975. Yes, it is old now. But essentially, it was designed to be quiet, smooth trains and the ones that are well maintained are still decent and quiet trains.
LMFAOOO the way you said that yeah that was your first time in NYC ☠️
These look great. I hope LA either modernizes or replaces their metro trains at some point. It's almost comical how hard it is to hear the announcements or to know what direction a train is headed.
Agree! I was on the gold line the other day after not being on it for awhile and it was brutal. Although, If they were going to focus on one train definitely should be the red/purple line cause that one is a mess.
New York city deserves much more 😍❤️ hope the modernize the stations too 👏🏼
Leave it to the general media to show an significantly younger R62A when referring to an R46 at 1:55 . This is one of the many reasons why general knowledge in railroad operations and roing stock should be strongly encouraged in mass American culture, instead of the latest car or tiktok trend.
Sloppy reporting and that's a big mistake.
About time! Can’t wait to see them in service 😌
Not me- why you ask? Because all of the homeless will help themselves to lay down on the seats as they always have, AND, their offensive/UNBEARABLE stench will carry through to at least both adjacent train cars...don't be so anxious for these new cars...at least now, you can simply move to the next car that doesn't smell so bad.
Agreed, P E. The open gangway cars on the R211T is a bust (meaning a flop).
I’m not fond of the open concept. Now everyone in the train is susceptible to danger in another car or fouls smells.

Personally in opinion, I’m not a fan of the seating format in those new cars(I.E. the R46 & R68) where you sit and look at the window closely. However, everything else is more modernized such as the gangways and security cameras. I am looking forward to ride these soon.
About time damn!!
The train pictured here at 1:55 is not an R46, that's an R62A on the Lexington Avenue Local 6 Line so I think there must have been a footage issue there. The R62A has been in operation on the Broadway/7th Avenue Local 1 Line, Lexington Avenue Local 6 Line and 42nd Street Shuttle for 37 years. They were cascaded from the Flushing Line to the Lexington Avenue Line when the R188s were rolled in onto the Flushing Line afterwards.
I rode walk through trains in Hong Kong when I was a child... That was over 30 years ago 🤦♀️, we are just starting to have them here in NYC???
NYC is not Hong Kong buddy 😂😂
And NYC is neither Japan, Korea, or even Germany or United Kingdom
1:09 I would rephrase that comment about going from end to end without opening the doors. You do have to realize that there is a middle cab where the middle conductor is located in his own compartment. So you can only move half way through the entire car set...
i love the new design and easy access between each car. i just wish there was a way to go to each borough without having to go through manhattan and make going from bronx to queens and brooklyn quicker and easier
The only cons with these R211s are the fewer seats & smaller windows. Everything else is actually pretty good. I think they get put on the B & D trains since the IND 8th Ave line will get CBTC soon, & those R68s & R68As aren't CBTC compatible.
The base order cars are for the 8th Avenue Line with the 75 SIR cars obviously going there. Everything beyond that is speculation.
Honestly in my view, here’s what makes logical sense:
-Base order cars (440 regular + 20 Open Gangway cars) would be assigned to the A and Rockaway Park Shuttle routes replacing all the R46 cars on that route and the C route (pushing the 130 R179s to the C route).
-Option Order 1: 130 of 640 cars go to the C route to push out 92 R179s that are in 4-car sets out to the J/Z, L, and M. This will give a needed fleet expansion to those lines). C route is now 50% R179 and 50% R211. The rest of the cars (510) will go to the E, F, and R routes out of Jamaica Yard. This pushed out 405 R160s out to the D route in Concourse Yard, which allows for all the R68/As to be in Coney Island Yard for the B, N/W, and Q service to replace about half of the R46 fleet there.
-Option order 2: 405 of 437 cars go to Jamaica Yard for E, F, and R service. This pushes out about 320 R160 cars out of that yard to Coney Island Yard for B train service, reassigning the R68/A cars over to the N/W and Q service and replacing the rest of the R46 cars. Also the G train is lengthened using about 190 of the remaining 565 R160 cars, and the R continuing to being 100% R160s using the 375 R160s over there, with the occasional use of the R160 here and there.
So they finally got the trains every other system has. I rode this train in Medellín Colombia 10 years ago

@@craigwiggins8287 if you don’t like public transportation that’s your problem. You want them to stay homeless? Some fake Christian you are.
Thanks
Finally those walk-thru open gangway designs have come to NYC
I would like to see platform doors everywhere like the airtrain has
Noooooo…..😢
It’s not a proper NYC subway if I can understand the announcements 😅
Really nice I love my NYC but I hope people don’t Destroy.
They’re beautiful.
I'd like to see the MTA inject tunnels with antennas so we can get a cell service while underground. The solution is not difficult. An acceds point planted every quarter mile which is directly connected to an above ground antenna. Baffles me why this has not been done yet.
应该是没用上华为的5G通讯设备吧,所以,地下没信号。
I like the older trains where they have seats where they have the two seats together where u can look out the window instead of these trains where it's just one long bench I don't see why they can't just make those cars but with the new technology
It’s for added standing capacity. But I agree, those are nicer.
For people who need to walk with assistance, these seats are definitely better. I used a walker until last year.
@@thesubwaynut I agree I just wish they made both
That's the 75 footers, the R46 and R68. They don't handle crowds so well since they have fewer doors and longer spaces between the doors. But, yes, these are nice when the trains aren't crowded.
Luckily the G train won't be changing for several more decades, so at least we've got that
We're gonna need a window to breath sometimes. 💎⚡️👑🎀
Found them all.
im glad to see mta catching up
Let's see how long they can keep that look pristine
I give it a month
It’s nice to finally have modern trains. The features you see here have been a mainstay on various rapid transit systems in Asia and Europe for decades.
Japan GOATED FR
It’s NYC, the biggest subways system in the world I believe, it’s not exactly easy. A lot do Americans cities that don’t even use subways much have nicer trains
In London UK, we have trains with Open-Gangways operating on the London Underground District, Hammersmith & City, Circle and Metropolitan Lines plus the trains on the London Overground and Elizabeth Line have an Open-Gangway as well. The trains on Thameslink and Great Northern route from Moorgate to Welwyn Garden City, Hertford North and Stevenage have Open-Gangways on them as well.
"modern?" maybe for 1998
who gives a F about Europe and Asian countries...Its NYC...Not Europe or Asia....This is one reason why NYC has lost its character...Because of millenial snwflakes likes you that want NYC to copy other areas around the world making cities look bland. Then again your generation has no taste so i am not surprised. Plus I already see problems with these new trains. For example, you wont be able to avoid the crazy people and the odor from homeless people by walking between cars. Now that these are OPEN CAR WALK THROUGHS, the smell and craziness will spread throughout the entire train
MTA needs to clean the subways and get rid of the criminals before these trains hit the scene.
Asia is way ahead of the US. Nothing is “modern” from these trains when compared with Seoul, Tokyo, Singapore, Bangkok and Hong Kong.
Now they need the platform screen doors to make sure people are even more safe.
