  • Inverkip Kirk was established in the 12th century by Paisley Abbey. By the late 18th century it was converted into the Shaw Stewart Mausoleum and a new church built nearby. The first Stewart was a natural son of King Robert III and also held lands at Blackhall Castle in Paisley. The mausoleum incorporates some of the remains of the old kirk. James Paraffin Young and his wife Mary are buried here as they owned the nearby Kelly Estate. James once employed around 4000 people at his paraffin oil, petroleum and paraffon wax works at Addiewell. The oil shale bings are still prominent parts of the landscape there to this day.
