- I saw Ink Sinker in Joanns & had to SNAG IT to test it out for y'all! Ink Sinker is an alcohol ink that claims to create "squiggly streams" for alcohol ink in resin! I've only gotten this effect to work in resin a few times but I don't really know what I did to achieve it. I had to find out if this was THE ANSWER TO ALL OF OUR PROBLEMS! Does Ink Sinker work?!

About my channel: Hey everyone! I'm Heather, the crazy lady behind ArtsyMadwoman! I'm an artist that literally cannot pick just one art to do... SO! My channel is where I test out all different kinds of arts! We experiment with different materials to see what happens. I also want to hone in on some of my favorite arts like TUFTING, PAINTING, POTTERY, JEWELRY MAKING... So we won't always be newbies to something lol I hope you subscribe & stick around for the mad things we're going to do ;D - Хобби
Not sure if this is a weird suggestion, but I'd like to see what it would look like if you premixed the colored ink with the white ink/ink sinker before dropping it into the resin. So then you already have your desired colors? Still might not do the lava lamp effect but the results could be really interesting. 🤷🏼♀️
That is what I was thinking too! I hope she gives it a shot.
Was going to suggest the same thing!
OMG that's what I thought too!!!
My thoughts exactly
Yes yes yes!! Amazing suggestion, I’m super curious about this too! We will be testing this next, thank you!! ❤️❤️❤️
I wonder if the results were different with the box is because the density of the sides of the box were narrow and the pyramid is much denser. I hope this makes sense. 🙃
Yes! I thought this too!!! One was being bent in one direction, the other got to go straight down.
I thought the same.
Oooo!! You may be onto something! Okay next time I’ll pull out the box molds & test with those! ❤️
@@ArtsyMadwoman I can hardly wait!!
This was where my thoughts were going as well! Though in my head I was using thickness of the product vs your use of density.
Yay!!!! Back with resin and.... and a sinker! 🥰. Great work and results! Let me know if you wanna collab! 😊😊🥰
Use pinata blanco blanco (white ink) put more colors and only like 5 drops of white, then colors again, then white again. Pinata white is the magic your looking for. Also, the tip that was floppy little nub, was a bubble that didnt pop. I love those molds too
A thicker resin would also work better in a more shallow mold...thats it, the only tips i have for ya lol
I think the tip being squishy was also bc of the mold shape. With the bottom being a small tip, ALL of the ink she put in accumulated into that one small tip.
Oh yeah, maybe it doesn't PUSH the colors down, maybe it pulls them behind it, so the layer of ink on top follows the path of the white drip.
Not so sure it was a bubble. If you watch the video, especially on the alcohol white, the white sinks immediately down to the tip. I suspect the resin needed to sit and thicken up just a bit.
Viscosity is the issue. The resin is too thick for those colors to push through (Ranger is higher quality and probably more dense with pigment). The white ink has a higher density (white pigment is heavier, even in paint). Maybe try setting your bottles of resin in a hot water bath before pouring or sitting them in front of a heater or hair dryer. That should make them thinner. I'd also be super interested in what happens in you pour the resin and let it cure for a little before you do the inks. It would make it thicker, but you might get some thicker streams. I am just curious about the look, but might also slow things down enough that the alcohol ink doesn't make it to the tip and weaken it.
MY results wirh warming up TABLE TOP Resin, to make it thinner, basically ruins the project, because you run the risk of a flash cure, and once it’s warm, you won’t get “honest” effects you’d normally see without warming it. If you warm CASTING Resin, the thinner resins, which is what you should ONLY use for these types of projects, I PROMISE you, it won’t cure all the way! You could wait a MONTH! Just use CASTING resin, (look for that in the descriptions of the resins which usually indicate exactly that it’s a CASTING resin. I’d personally recommend the Lets Resin brand. They’re fairly priced, and I’ve never had any issues, with very few bubbles!! Table top Resin is what you’d use for coasters, bar tops, and things like cutting boards where you’re doing either abstract art, or BEACH ART!!
Super interesting video, as always! :D
Also, as someone who does a lot of alcohol ink sinking in resin, the best results I've had are with Piñata Blanco Blanco, but also and mostly adding some resin on top of the ink + sinker/white ink.
But I've been wanting to experiment more with things, so I'm super glad you tackling this! I didn't know there were "ink sinker" that weren't labelled as white ink so it's super interesting :D
I have 2 giant bottles of C sinker white from Let's Resin, but I use that for the feathering effect, which has turned out so cool and I have to thank Daniel Cooper for doing the tutorials on that. It's one of the more popular pieces I make, though with so many done, I had to stop as I was running out of room to put the finished pieces. *laughs* So glad to see you back, unless you have been around and I have been too busy with life, work and getting ready for the holidays. Will say I am going back over some of your videos to get some inspirations for future things and I think I am going to see about tackling the liquid crystal round circles you did. Expensive piece to make, but I think it's going to be perfect as we live up here in Fargo, ND, and the weather changes are InSaNe!
Thank you so much for showing this, because I do believe I would have run across this at some point this week and gotten it too. Going to wait for now though, money is super tight, but starting to get better. ❤❤❤
🥰🥰😊😊😊
Try using Piñata Blanco Blanco white ink and it will most likely give you a better effect. Also try waiting for the resin to thicken up a little before. adding the white ink/sinker. If the resin is too thin/runny it will allow the white ink to sink too quickly.
All the best, Diane, UK xx
I have pinata Blanco but didn't really get cool effects but I don't recall what brand my color AI were idk lol have you used ranger SAI before ...
@@daniellepharoah-westlund8879 No I haven't used Ranger Alcohol inks before. I use Piñata Alcohol inks too, as they came as a set when I bought the white ink from them. I also think it could be something to do with the brand and even the type of resin use, that can affect what the inks do. I can't recall what resin I used at the time though sorry. xx
I am thrilled that you are doing some resin videos again!!! You were one of the reasons why I started resin art ❤ please do more alcohol ink experiments 🤞
Yes, please try with other alcohol inks! I love watching experimentation and the overall creative process!
I think you'd get a better comparison by using molds with identical volume...and also using smaller molds. I think those are too deep. Also you can get better results letting the resin sit for a little bit before adding the inks.
This was so interesting to watch, love the artsy madscience 😄
Would love to see a second go with the ink sinker! 💕
I've never done resin arts but I watch videos on it all the time. I'd suggest letting the resin thicken up just a little bit before adding the ink then maybe it wouldn't mix so much(?). I do really love the white alcohol ink wisps in your 2nd go. ^_^
You make me smile, I love your personality!
Keep going with the tests! very fun! Thanks Artsy Madwoman!
Welcome back to resin! I have learned so much from you, many thanks. These experiments are always helpful. Lots of good suggestions, can't wait to see what you do next. 💓
Loved this video! Also, your glasses are freaking adorable!!
I love these resin experiments! Please keep doing these! 🙏
Yes! Please a part 2! 💖
Yes, please try it again. The second choice was the best i think. Thank you for sharing with all of us.
Definitely do more, those were pretty, but like you I love lots of full on rainbow colours. The premix idea that others have said sounds a good plan. Keep up the awesome work beautiful lady x x x
I forgot to add. You are a trip to watch. Keep up the experiments!!!
I love how the blue one turned out.
The music! Perfect fit.
yes to more tests!!! theyre like asmr for your eyeballs lol
Yes to another video, with different inks :)
I love seeing that a lot of commenters feel the same: that mixing a certain amount of the white alcohol ink into the colored ink might make it denser and create an opaque color, but still able to be "streamy"
Yes please, test different color inks! 💜
I LOOOOOVE the little square pot with the squigglies! It's so pretty! I would love to see you test that mold with Let's Resin and other Amazon-available brand inks, as I have a few of them, & I am sure many others do, too. Thanks so much for showing this. ILU TAD, too! Happy Creating!!!!
It isn’t what you wanted but they are still cool. I would watch you try it again. I would watch what ever you do. Thank you for sharing this with us.
Just a tip I learned from another resin artist when trying to unmold something. Take a pipette with alcohol and get that in-between the resin and mold. You don't need a lot, just a few drops and then squish the alcohol around and the cured resin pops out so easy! My husband was having to unmold some of my projects because I don't have the hand strength. With using alcohol I was able to do it myself. Soap works too but that made it a bit too slippery for me.
Since the instructions said to use Art Resin, I'd try it with Art Resin because it might be formulated to work specifically with their brand and only tested using their brand.
As I was looking on Amazon for sinker I also saw one that said clear. Think I will try this.
Would love to see more experiments. I think perhaps different molds, and also letting the resin sit and thicken for a min that way the ink doesn't have such an easy time sinking all the way to the bottom. Most pitri dish effects I have played with involved letting the resin sit and thicken and different intervals before dropping the ink. Love seeing you do this!!
I wonder if it would pull more colors if maybe you do a few color drops & immediately add the white before you continue to do the other colors the same way? Would that make a difference by not letting the colors expand & bloom before you drop the white on them? (It showed a lot of green & since that was one of the last colors you dropped, it makes sense that it had less time to disperse & spread)
Also if the resin was a little thicker, the inks would fall slower & not drop so fast to the bottom. It wouldn't be as soft if you were using a different shape mold where ALL of the white doesn't accumulate all together in a small tip.
Yes do more testing!!! Always yes to resin
I'd definitely like to see you try again with a different brand of inks.
And this is why we buy the stuff to try the things!!! 🖤
How did I catch this video so fast. Yay on returning to resin!
❤️❤️❤️
Yes, please! I would love to see you test it again using Ranger inks. Thanks
I hope you will try this again with the Ranger alcohol inks because that would be so cool if it worked out like the cube that you made! Thank you for the great video either way!!
This is such a cool experiment! When watching instagrammers use alcohol ink, I see that they drop the white alcohol ink over each drop of colored alcohol ink. Then, they keep layering color, white, color, white. I use dish soap to loosen the deep silicone molds. I love experimenting and I love your videos!
Put a light under that, i think that it looks very good 😍
This was cool! I didnt know that ink sinker exsisted? I'd like to see it w just the ranger inks 2 c what it does.... I HAVE 2 KEEP IT REAL THOUGH!!! I MISS THE BUN!!!?!?!!!🤗 thx for sharing like always hun!🥰 That one that you like looked SOOO cool but i agree.... def not squiggly things! :)
Please do!!!!......try it with another ink!......Love what you do!!!!!
Yes try it again with the Ranger inks. Love the smoky effects one.🌟🌟🥰🥰🥰🌟🌟🌟🥰🥰🥰
I’m so glad to see you doing resin again! I’ve enjoyed your other creative projects too but, a little like alcohol Hank.. I’m addicted to resin, tho not in an ingestible way😳😆 I’m curious how Lets Resins Sinker C white alcohol ink would work. It’s designed to not create blobs so, it might not pull the resin way down but, it may pull it down enough.. without dropping all the way to the bottom leaving the tip uncured like the Ranger did. I have the C Sinker but, I haven’t tried it with a deep mold yet. It is better than Piñata as far as blobs go in pendant molds; because it’s not as heavily pigmented. I love a good experiment! Thanks
I use a white pigment mixed with resin let it get a little warm then drop it in can’t wait to see more 💜
Yes please do it again ASAP
Pretty sure you are my new favorite content creator and crafter. We need to be best friends, hahaha. You remind me of me. Also, this is great! I need some sinker ink.
I have tried the same neon alcohol ink set the green is the only one that every really survived the curing process.
The squishy tip is what all of mine end up feeling like.
Yes please do another video with the other inks and maybe a different mold might help? I’ve only managed once and it was a complete fluke in a tiny egg mold, and would love to give it another try (on purpose this time 😂) Thanks for all your hard work and amazing tutorials/experiments 🥰
As some others have suggested, I would like to see the white ink premixed with each of the colored inks before being dropped in the resin
Would love to see these on a light stand. It would be interesting to see the colours
Hey, loved your demo. I think it's the BR inks. I did the same thing with Ranger inks and Pinata white and it did great. I just ordered some sinker white the other night after watching Daniel Cooper do some pendent molds and he was using it. It did make a difference with his pieces. Maybe easier to see because they were small pendant molds.
A learning experience!!!!
The reason ink sinks in certain ways is because you have to wait for the resin to cure a little. You should do experiments on different times of when you add the ink.
I push the mold where I put the ink and drag it down with my finger. It does wonders. Can even use a tooth pick to create more dimension from the outside of the mold.
I agree with all the take away impressions u were left. 1 thing I have been shocked by soooo many times when I am “playing” is what an absolute game changer illuminating a piece can have. Especially since all the color sat at the bottom where u applied em, it will be the source & have strongest color FX for the light to work with. Plain white light will allow the colors to pop I would imagine… BUT ya know how RGB L.E.D. Lights can make things look like they’re moving when u strobe them!?!? It causes an amazing psychedelic looking effect!
Just sayin! May turn out to be the magic sauce for these pieces!!!
Yes!please test with other products😁
More test please 🐸
Hey…. If you put your colored alcohol ink into a pipette, then insert the pipette into the resin (that’s in your mold) and squeeze drops into the resin so they look to float, then put your white resin on the surface so it drops, it will bring your inks into that lava lamp look…. Try it out!! Love you and your videos, I got into resin way back after watching one of your videos… thank you!!
dooooo it with the ranger and other inks!!! it would be amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! love it!
Very interesting results from your experiment. I've never seen anything like that. Maybe it was the depth of the mold, or maybe the brand of alcohol ink? Check out Daniel Cooper if you haven't already. He does petri's all the time, but they are in pendant type molds mostly. They always turn out amazing.
🥰 thank you 😊
I’ve made heart box where I achieved the wispy lava lamp look and I used blanco blanco white alcohol ink.
Hello! So, I have done a lot of investigating different brands and TYPES of alcohol ink, and you are correct! The Ranger alcohol inks DO actually create smaller “hairy” streams of ink. And when you say you used the Ranger sinker ink, are you referring to the Piñata blanco blanco? (That IS a Ranger product, even comes in the Ranger “rainbow” pack of inks). Because that specific type of sinker ink IS HANDS DOWN THE HEAVIEST sinker ink you can buy!! So the combo of the two will give you a very unique look to a deep mold. The type of resin MUST BE either a deep pour resin, or a “CASTING” resin, which are much thinner than your average table top Resin. I mentioned that because you’d said something about the resin getting really hot, and CASTING Resin at BEST gets to around 120 -130 degrees. Whereas I’m sure you know the table top resin, is MUCH THICKER, and gets REALLY REALLY HOT as it cures. I’d love to see the effects of a regular brand (NOT RANGER), colored alcohol ink with the Art Resin sinker white, but with a CASTING RESIN. (If that’s not what you’re using). I’ve never used Art Resin. I HAVE WASTED A HUGE amount of money (to me anyway), on LETS RESIN sinker white, as basically the ONLY WAY to get it to actually SINK the other inks, is to wait for 24 hours, until the clear stuff floats to the top, then REMOVE some of that clear layer. Otherwise, it SUCKS!!! (This is the LETS RESIN sinker white, NOT ART RESIN!). So I’m very interested to see what effects you’ll come up with.
I think the ink but also the shape of the mould might have had something to do with it too; testing it on simple round coasters might give different results because the ink would have a larger surface that doesn't end in one single point. If you want to play with more resin effects; as you know, every epoxy resin no mater the brand, goes through a cycle of temperature and thickness changes during curing. You can time and measure the temperatures your type of resin goes through, and add the colors at different times, temp and thickness and see what happens. I like to write down the resin brand, effect, and times/thickness, for future references too. Happy playing and thank you for sharing! 😃💖
What you are trying to do is make your colored resin/ink denser than the clear resin. This can be achieved in many ways. you could add a powder pigment or regular chalk powder to some colored resin to make it denser/heavier than the clear resin. another thing to do is wait a few minutes before adding your colored resin or inks to your clear resin so the clear resin is thicker making the color sink slower and not just sink completely through and pool at the bottom of your mold. hope this helps!
Maybe try with a non casting resin. Something thicker that has more resistance. Results could be interesting
Would love to see the white ink/ink sinker with the different alcohol inks but also with different moulds.
I’d be really interested to watch another video on this! Not only premixed colour but a different colour ink 🤔 resin is strange, I love working with it but it’s strange lol
I think you should mix the the sink with the color then drop it in to the mold
That would be interesting to see what happens
Ooo! We will definitely be trying that! Thank you! ❤️
I was also going to suggest what would happen if you color the white, then sink it - also, my second idea is what would happen if you added 'x' drops of clear Elmer's glue into the resin before you pour - I love your videos
Please test more!
I would let the resin cure/set a bit in the mold before adding the alcohol ink. That way the white will drag the colors down more and it won't overpower the piece
Also wanted to ask if you've tried octopus inks? I've seen other artists use them and they're sooooo vibrant!!
You won't get the effects if your uncured resin is too thick or too runny. This is why the ArtResin ink sinker suggests you use their resin. They have the perfect viscosity for this effect, and I've been using their resin for years.
I believe you need to add less white. Just one drop on each color. Then a layer of clear on top too give it extra weight on top of colors. . Then gently stir but not overlapping where you already stirred to mix and twirl the colors and it also pushes it down more. I have no idea though because I haven’t tried yet. If you surch for “the flower technique” you will see what I mean.
I'd be mad if I bought the ink sinker only to realize it works the same as the white alcohol ink! Is there no clear option?? Maybe a solution could be to stick a syringe in the piece and shoot out the alcohol ink where you want it? I'm wondering if that would work well.
The second attempt looked pretty cool! But I swear they're both ignoring the colors and just making the piece white.
I've seen resin dice videos where they use a syringe to get swirls of color mixed in with the clear base. I think they mix a separate batch of colored resin and dispense that into the mold rather than the ink itself, but that seems like a big waste if you're going to need new needles/syringes every time because the resin will just cure it closed!
@@leahgroess5361 Yeah good point, it might be unrealistic to pull off.
I think it was just too big of an area for them to cover. What I would try would be to fill it halfway, use, alcohol, inks, fill it the rest of the way and use more inks then use the sinker and see what that does! I’m glad I held off on ordering this, because I’m not sure that I will now. Would love to see you do it how I suggested & see how turns out! Thanks for doing this video!! 🙏🏻🙏🏻
ResinAce has a good video where she shows the effect of time/viscosity on alcohol inks if you want a little more control over the time of alcohol ink effect you’re getting! It’s in the rainbow clock video from a few months ago.
Coucou ,,,, Le petit .. trop beau !!!! Si tu le mettais sur un socle de lumière !!! Merci pour le partage 🥰❤❤❤❤
Heather, there is a guy that has a youtube channel that uses this sinker in a totally different way, but maybe he can give you a tip. His name is Daniel Cooper and he uses Let's Resin.
Thank you 😊
Thank you so much for posting your experiments! I think that if you were to STIR the top of the mold about 25 minutes AFTER adding the sinker white, you might be able to drag the colors farther down into the mold?? And I think that the shape of this mold concentrates the white into the tip... I your mold was of a different shape, you might not get that soft tip.
Another idea might be to let the resin set up a bit (get warmer) before you add the sinking method. In theory the resin would be thicker and slow the sinking effect.
Fantastic video from what I’ve seen on RUclips your supposed to count the drops of alcohol ink with the sinker you match the number of drops and I’d drastically reduce the amount of drops you use overall I’d say imagine cutting the mold into 4 quarters and putting say 4drops of colour in each quarter and then adding drops of the sinker in the exact same place as you put the colour drops (colour first all 4 quarters then add the sinker)that in my opinion would reveal better results I love your channel and keep up the fantastic work!!!
Adding some isopropyl alcohol to dilute the white paint will help your work.
Lmaoo I be doing this on accident mad I messed up a project. I should stop being so hard on myself because there's a market for this look!!
I love that box it instantly reminded me of the poor unfortunate souls from the little mermaid 😂
You need to layer the color drop, then one drop of white in each section of color then layer the color on again. You didn’t layer & used too much white. Best white ink for this technique is Piñata Blanca/white. You should also let your resin sit and thicken a bit before adding the layers of inks. You don’t need much at all. Also try Ranger Alcohol inks & Piñata Blanca white.
I think you should use the box mold again for a fair comparison
This was a really cool experiment I would love to see you keep trying cus I think it might be it was to much space for it to travel maybe as well. Because with the box the sides were much smaller and not so much depth and space. So maybe try different shapes as well as the alcohol colors. Overall the ink sinker makes some cool designs thi
I think the shape of the mold also has an impact on the way that the alcohol ink sinks.. using the small square cup mold, there's less surface area and a thinner layer of resin for the alcohol to sink through. I would try using that same type of mold when you do the next test..
My daughter Harper and I watch all your videos! We want to know what would happen if you used the ink sinker FIRST, and then immediately layered with the alcohol ink. Could it pull the inks down with it, rather than “pushing” them down from above? Thanks for all your fun content for us to enjoy!
To make it work you have to premix the white sinker with the other Colors in little silicone cup
I use a little alcohol instead of water when demolding and it will help it pop right out
Yes, please try again with the different inks, and maybe use the box rather than the crystal forms.
Did u do it again,id love to see what u did with all the suggestions and different ways of doing it.
Love watching ur resin work, always have. From a chick from England Lol 😆 x.
I would try it again with different inks and probably different resin to. As far as white alcohol ink goes I only use Pinata white and I get really good results. I would try Ranger or pinata inks against the ink sinker.
How about putting them on those light blocks to see how it would look. Happy crafting.
